No matter how small, where it’s located or what industry it serves, every business needs to rely on project management to be successful. Without effective project managers, a company would have difficulty delivering new products and services to customers, growing revenue and meeting other critical business objectives.
Besides earning a degree, an aspiring or current project management professional can also enroll in courses and earn certifications in project management to go the extra mile. Knowing which certificates are worth the time, energy and money can be challenging with so many choices.
Continue practicing to learn about project management certifications and how they could benefit someone looking to increase their knowledge, Boost their skills and land a project management position.
Project management skills can help job seekers Boost their marketability and show potential employers what value they can bring to an organization. Projects are getting more complex and resource intensive, meaning employers need to invest in a solid project manager with expertise and project management skills to get the job done.
Project managers are in demand in virtually every industry, from construction to advertising and everything in between. When a hiring manager or recruiter parses through thousands of resumes, those with a project management certification may rank higher, meaning that those candidates would have a higher chance of being hired at an organization. While this isn’t a guarantee, it’s commonly understood that earning this type of certification can increase an applicant’s value and help a project manager get hired faster.
A project management certification can also help you command a higher salary: A Project Management Institute survey found that U.S. project managers who earned a Project Management Professional certification reported 32% higher salaries than those who didn’t. While they do require an upfront investment in terms of time and money, for many project managers, getting a certification pays dividends down the road.
For those interested in receiving a project management certification, it’s worth researching which one will help Boost their skills, build their knowledge and potentially advance their career. Below are some of the best project management certifications to consider.

Those who earn this certification can typically work in any industry, use any methodology and succeed in various situations.
There are helpful online training courses available for professionals who want to sit for the PMP exam and earn the certification, but the training courses aren’t included in the cost of the exam. Giving the length and breadth of the exam, studying before is strongly encouraged.

Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification can make you stand out against the competition in the field of project management. If you’ve wondered how to get PMP certification, know that you must first complete work experience, training courses and an exam.
But is PMP certification worth it? In this article, we’ll explore what it takes to get certified, how much you might have to pay and how PMP certification can help you level up your project management career.
What Is PMP Certification?
Professional certifications verify your career skills and allow you to learn more about important concepts and industry best practices that can help in your day-to-day operations.
PMP certification is the most widely recognized in the world of project management. It’s available through the Project Management Institute (PMI), which publishes the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). The PMBOK is the Holy Grail of knowledge when it comes to project management concepts.
PMP certification demonstrates a strong understanding of the concepts set forth in the PMBOK and other reference materials. This designation can help you distinguish yourself from your peers and gain respected credentials in your field. Along the way, you’ll learn about concepts like Agile, waterfall project scheduling, leadership and business management.
How to Sign Up for PMP Certification
The first step to earning PMP certification is to begin work in the field of project management. PMP certification requires months of work experience. Precise requirements vary depending on your level of education. If you have a bachelor’s degree, you’ll need 36 months of relevant project experience to qualify for the PMP credential. Without a degree, you must complete 60 months of experience.
If you have this work experience or are working toward it, the next step is to complete at least 35 hours of formal PMP training, also called “contact hours,” or hold a current CAPM certification. You can complete contact hours through a PMP certification course, which you may take online or in person. These courses take a few weeks to a few months to complete, and they teach the concepts you should understand before taking the PMP certification exam.
Below, we’ll discuss how to get a PMP certification in more detail, including prerequisites and PMP exam costs.
PMP Certification Requirements
You must accomplish a certain amount of professional experience and formal training before you qualify for PMP certification.
If you have completed high school or an associate degree but not a bachelor’s, PMP certification requirements are as follows.
60 months leading projects
35 contact hours
If you have a bachelor’s degree, you must complete the following before pursuing PMP certification.
36 months leading projects
35 contact hours
PMP Cost
Most PMP certification training programs (through which you can earn your contact hours) range in cost from around $300 to around $3,000. Courses offered through well-known colleges and universities tend to cost more, but many also offer for-credit programs that result in undergraduate or graduate certificates. Consider a program that holds GAC accreditation when searching for courses. Free PMP certification training is available through some resources, but usually only for short trial periods.
To sit for the exam, the cost is $405 for PMI members or $575 for nonmembers.
PMP Time Commitment
How long does it take to get PMP certification? The most time-consuming part of the PMP certification process is completing the required work experience. Start documenting your work experience as soon as you consider applying for PMP certification. Once you get that experience under your belt, the rest of the certification process involves studying and scheduling your test. The time spent on this step can vary depending on your schedule and study habits, location and testing center availability.
Most PMP certification training courses take only a few weeks to a few months to complete. After that, it’s up to you how much time you spend studying for the certification exam. Retakes cost $275 for PMI members and $375 for nonmembers, so it’s best to go into the exam as prepared as possible.
PMP Renewal Costs
Once you’ve passed the PMP exam, you must complete a certain level of continuing education to keep your certification active. The renewal fee, due every three years, is $60 for PMI members or $150 for nonmembers.
Is PMP Certification Worth It?
To determine whether PMP certification is worth it to you, weigh the costs of certification against the potential benefits. Since we’ve listed the costs of PMP certification above, you likely have a good idea of the investment you’d need to make to get certified. Now, it’s time to consider your potential return on that investment.
Benefits of PMP certification
Salary increase. PMPs in the U.S. earn about 32% more than their non-certified peers in project management.
Greater respect in the industry. The Project Management Institute is the leading organization for project management knowledge and the publisher of the PMBOK. Earning PMP certification through PMI carries lots of weight in the project management industry.
Greater career opportunities. Holding PMP certification should make you more marketable when it comes to looking for better or different positions in project management.
Consider Your Career
Are you looking to make a career change? Move into a higher role in your current team? In either case, PMP certification could be just what you need to level up your career. As part of the certification process, you’ll learn industry best practices that you can start incorporating into your day-to-day work life immediately.
Look at Earning Potential vs. Certification Cost
According to PMI, PMP-certified professionals in the U.S. earn a median annual salary of $123,000, compared to a median of $93,000 for their non-certified colleagues. This translates to a 32% salary increase for certified PMPs.
Multiply your current salary by 1.32 to estimate your potential PMP certification salary. You can then weigh that salary increase against the cost of PMP certification training and the PMP exam. This cost vs. benefit analysis can help you understand whether PMP certification would be worth it for you.

Editorial Note: They earn a commission from partner links on Forbes Advisor. Commissions do not affect their editors' opinions or evaluations.
Two globally acknowledged project management titles are the Project Management Professional (PMP)® and Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. The Project Management Institute (PMI) confers both of these credentials.
If you’re starting a career in project or program management, it can be tough to decide whether to pursue PgMP vs. PMP certification. This guide explores both designations and the benefits of each. Let’s get into it.
What Is the PMP Certification?
The PMP certification validates a project manager’s leadership skills, technical aptitude and understanding of the business environment as a whole.
Earning the PMP credential gives a project manager an extra level of credibility, distinguishing them as an expert. PMPs understand the intricacies of project management and know the processes and language needed to help organizations achieve their goals.
PMP Cost
The PMP exam fee is $405 for PMI members and $575 for nonmembers. If you plan to take the exam, becoming a PMI member is worthwhile. The annual membership fee is $149, or $32 for students. PMI membership saves you money on the PMP, qualifies you for discounted prices for other exams and provides access to the PMI job boards.
PMP Requirements
All prospective PMPs must have 35 hours of formal project management education, or “contact hours.” Alternatively, you may hold the Certified Associate in Project Management® designation.
You can complete formal contact hours through the following avenues.
PMI-authorized training partners
University or college academic courses
Employer-sponsored programs
Training companies
Distance learning programs that include an end-of-course assessment
When applying for PMP certification, you must show that you accrued 35 contact hours by outlining the institutions you attended, the courses you completed and the number of qualifying hours you completed.
A four-year degree is not required to pursue PMP certification, but it does reduce professional experience requirements for PMP designation. Candidates without bachelor’s degrees must complete at least 60 months of nonconcurrent project management experience. For applicants with four-year degrees, the minimum experience requirement is 36 months.
When submitting your professional experience, you must provide PMI with a timeline of projects you led, the true title of each project, the project duration, your roles and responsibilities, the number of team members, the budget, a short description of the project’s purpose and a summary of the final project deliverables.
PMP Exam
The PMP exam reflects what project managers do in the field. Each question on the exam is written and reviewed by individuals who have earned PMP certification. The exam is accredited against standards set by the International Organization for Standardization 9001 and American National Standards Institute 17024.
The exam consists of 180 questions, which are divided into the three domains of project management: people (42%), process (50%) and business environment (8%). Each domain is further divided into tasks, such as managing conflict, engaging stakeholders, and evaluating and delivering a project’s benefits and value. The questions are formatted as multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, hot area, multiple response and matching.
Note that from the date you become eligible to take the PMP exam, you have one year and three opportunities to pass. All exam attempts must take place in proctored settings, either online or at a testing site.
Earning certification confirms that you know how to get the job done right. Employers want a project manager who can meet deadlines and do so on budget and as efficiently as possible. PMP certification demonstrates that you can meet these expectations.
Lastly, a 2021 PMI report projects that 25 million new project managers are needed to meet the global economy’s projected demand by 2030. This increasing demand can lead to greater career and advancement opportunities, and PMP certification can help you stand out from the crowd. Furthermore, you open up new networking opportunities by becoming part of an internationally recognized group of over 1 million PMP holders.
What Is the PgMP Certification?
Unlike a project manager, who focuses on the intricacies of individual projects, a program manager oversees multiple complex projects that align with their organization’s objectives. The PgMP certification is one of the highest credentials an experienced program manager can receive from PMI.
PgMP Cost
The PgMP exam costs $800 for PMI members and $1,000 for nonmembers. Like the PMP, PMI membership may be worthwhile if only for this price reduction, with the members-only perks as an added benefit. Because the PgMP application process includes a panel review of your work, you do not have to pay until the panel gives its approval.
PgMP Requirements
Like the PMP, the PgMP application process requires you to write detailed descriptions of your previous project and program management work.
PgMP candidates with four-year degrees must have at least 48 months of project management experience or PMP certification plus 48 months of nonconcurrent program management experience in the last 15 years.
Those without four-year degrees must have a minimum of 48 months of project management experience or PMP certification, plus 84 months of nonconcurrent program management experience within the last 15 years.
PgMP Exam
The PgMP’s evaluation process comprises two sections: a panel review of your program management experience and a multiple-choice exam. You must pass the panel review process before you can take the exam.
During the review process, a panel of PgMP-certified volunteers evaluates the program management summaries you wrote in your initial application. This process ensures that your experience took place under minimal supervision and meets certification standards. This process can take up to 60 days.
After the panel review, you must take a 170-question multiple-choice exam. Certification seekers are allotted four hours to complete the proctored exam in a testing center.
The test is divided into five domains: program life cycle, strategic program management, benefits management, stakeholder management and governance. Most questions concern the program life cycle, which is composed of initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing.
PgMP Benefits
Obtaining the PgMP credential means more than just gaining a new title. Program managers must demonstrate more skills than project managers, including big-picture thinking, leadership, team building and resource management. PgMP certification verifies that you excel in each of these skills, making you an attractive candidate to employers.
Which One is Right for You?
New and intermediate project managers tend to aim for PMP certification. This credential requires fewer months of project management experience, making it a good option for those who do not yet qualify for the PgMP designation.
The PgMP, on the other hand, demonstrates that your skills go beyond those of a project manager. That said, the PgMP panel review process is stringent and requires concise explanations of each program you’ve managed, so it is critical to first make sure your previous experience lives up to PgMP standards.

Project Management Professional (PMP) is an industry-recognised certification for project managers.
Globally recognised and demanded, the PMP credential demonstrates that you have the experience, education and competency to successfully lead and direct projects.
The PMP® certification is renowned throughout the world. Part of that marketability comes from the prestige of PMI® certifications; achieving the globally recognised Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification will provide evidence of an individual’s knowledge, experience and ability to successfully manage a project.
Who should attend?
The PMP credential recognises demonstrated competence in leading and directing project teams. Experienced project managers should consider this qualification to consolidate their skills and allow them to demonstrate and be recognised as capable project managers.
Pre-requisites If you wish to take the PMP exam, PMI does require that you either hold:
A four-year degree (Bachelor’s or the global equivalent) and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education, or
A secondary diploma (high school or the global equivalent) with at least five years of project management experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.
You also have to apply to the Project Management Institute (PMI) before you can sit the exam. There’s a strict protocol as they have to authenticate that the above criteria has been met prior to exam attendance.
How will I benefit?
At the conclusion of the course students will:
Have sufficient knowledge and understanding to work as an informed member of a project team undertaking a variety of project management roles
Be able to examine and analyse the inputs, tools and techniques of the processes and knowledge areas of the PMBOK® Guide
Be prepared for the PMP examination having completed the required 35 contact hours
Be able to describe each process group and knowledge area of the PMBOK® Guide.
