E. How the automation responds to the process
Answer: ACD
Explanation:
Explanation::
Application discovery is an early technical validation step that involves collecting the information about applications in scope of a potential robotics use case. During discovery you need to find out application types (and if they are on
applications support matrix for Pega Robotics), how they are launched, how they are used, and check accessibility and functionality of the controls through interrogation. Application discovery is necessary to ensure that robotics use case is
viable and it doesn't have any technical constraints... or, if constraints exist, then what kind of workarounds will be necessary to ensure the use case is successful. The rationale for having application discovery as a best practice is that you
don't want to find out half-way through coding an automation that a key control is not available or not performing the desired action.

Editorial Note: They earn a commission from partner links on Forbes Advisor. Commissions do not affect their editors' opinions or evaluations.

Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification can make you stand out against the competition in the field of project management. If you’ve wondered how to get PMP certification, know that you must first complete work experience, training courses and an exam.

But is PMP certification worth it? In this article, we’ll explore what it takes to get certified, how much you might have to pay and how PMP certification can help you level up your project management career.

What Is PMP Certification?

Professional certifications verify your career skills and allow you to learn more about important concepts and industry best practices that can help in your day-to-day operations.

PMP certification is the most widely recognized in the world of project management. It’s available through the Project Management Institute (PMI), which publishes the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). The PMBOK is the Holy Grail of knowledge when it comes to project management concepts.

PMP certification demonstrates a strong understanding of the concepts set forth in the PMBOK and other reference materials. This designation can help you distinguish yourself from your peers and gain respected credentials in your field. Along the way, you’ll learn about concepts like Agile, waterfall project scheduling, leadership and business management.

How to Sign Up for PMP Certification

The first step to earning PMP certification is to begin work in the field of project management. PMP certification requires months of work experience. Precise requirements vary depending on your level of education. If you have a bachelor’s degree, you’ll need 36 months of relevant project experience to qualify for the PMP credential. Without a degree, you must complete 60 months of experience.

If you have this work experience or are working toward it, the next step is to complete at least 35 hours of formal PMP training, also called “contact hours,” or hold a current CAPM certification. You can complete contact hours through a PMP certification course, which you may take online or in person. These courses take a few weeks to a few months to complete, and they teach the concepts you should understand before taking the PMP certification exam.

Below, we’ll discuss how to get a PMP certification in more detail, including prerequisites and PMP test costs.

PMP Certification Requirements

You must accomplish a certain amount of professional experience and formal training before you qualify for PMP certification.

If you have completed high school or an associate degree but not a bachelor’s, PMP certification requirements are as follows.

  • 60 months leading projects
  • 35 contact hours

If you have a bachelor’s degree, you must complete the following before pursuing PMP certification.

  • 36 months leading projects
  • 35 contact hours

PMP Cost

Most PMP certification training programs (through which you can earn your contact hours) range in cost from around $300 to around $3,000. Courses offered through well-known colleges and universities tend to cost more, but many also offer for-credit programs that result in undergraduate or graduate certificates. Consider a program that holds GAC accreditation when searching for courses. Free PMP certification training is available through some resources, but usually only for short trial periods.

To sit for the exam, the cost is $405 for PMI members or $575 for nonmembers.

PMP Time Commitment

How long does it take to get PMP certification? The most time-consuming part of the PMP certification process is completing the required work experience. Start documenting your work experience as soon as you consider applying for PMP certification. Once you get that experience under your belt, the rest of the certification process involves studying and scheduling your test. The time spent on this step can vary depending on your schedule and study habits, location and testing center availability.

Most PMP certification training courses take only a few weeks to a few months to complete. After that, it’s up to you how much time you spend studying for the certification exam. Retakes cost $275 for PMI members and $375 for nonmembers, so it’s best to go into the test as prepared as possible.

PMP Renewal Costs

Once you’ve passed the PMP exam, you must complete a certain level of continuing education to keep your certification active. The renewal fee, due every three years, is $60 for PMI members or $150 for nonmembers.

Is PMP Certification Worth It?

To determine whether PMP certification is worth it to you, weigh the costs of certification against the potential benefits. Since we’ve listed the costs of PMP certification above, you likely have a good idea of the investment you’d need to make to get certified. Now, it’s time to consider your potential return on that investment.

Benefits of PMP certification

  • Salary increase. PMPs in the U.S. earn about 32% more than their non-certified peers in project management.
  • Greater respect in the industry. The Project Management Institute is the leading organization for project management knowledge and the publisher of the PMBOK. Earning PMP certification through PMI carries lots of weight in the project management industry.
  • Greater career opportunities. Holding PMP certification should make you more marketable when it comes to looking for better or different positions in project management.

Consider Your Career

Are you looking to make a career change? Move into a higher role in your current team? In either case, PMP certification could be just what you need to level up your career. As part of the certification process, you’ll learn industry best practices that you can start incorporating into your day-to-day work life immediately.

Look at Earning Potential vs. Certification Cost

According to PMI, PMP-certified professionals in the U.S. earn a median annual salary of $123,000, compared to a median of $93,000 for their non-certified colleagues. This translates to a 32% salary increase for certified PMPs.

Multiply your current salary by 1.32 to estimate your potential PMP certification salary. You can then weigh that salary increase against the cost of PMP certification training and the PMP exam. This cost vs. benefit analysis can help you understand whether PMP certification would be worth it for you.

  • Course requirements may be met with post-qualifying degree (post-baccalaureate or post-master’s) courses from an accredited college or university, but professional experience may not be counted until all coursework requirements for certification are met.
  • Relevant experience should have been gained within the five years preceding application at this level. The Board will consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis; applicants whose relevant experience falls outside the five years should provide a detailed explanation of their professional experience outside of that time window in their cover letter.
  • Note that, beginning in 2022, Ecologist certification holders who achieve a doctoral degree may upgrade to the Senior Ecologist level without completing other CEU for that 5-year certification period.

A holder of the Senior Ecologist designation is encouraged to use the full term, “Certified Senior Ecologist,” on business cards or in official signatures, but may use the initialism “CSE” if space limits require.

Recertification applications at the senior ecologist level require only a cover letter and up-to-date CV if the applicant is, at the time of application, currently certified as a Senior Ecologist by ESA and a member of the Society in good standing.

Senior Ecologist Emeriti

This category is for previously certified Senior Ecologists who are no longer working full-time. The requirements are:

  • Previously certified as a Senior Ecologist for at least 10 years, with no more than a total two-year lapse between periods of certification.
  • May no longer be employed full-time.
  • DO NOT USE THE APPLICATION FORM for this designation. Contact cert@nullesa.org if you are interested.

If the Senior Ecologist Emeritus/ta desires to depict certification on any official document, they are encouraged to use the term “Senior Ecologist Emeritus/ta.” This is meant as an honorary lifetime recognition and does not imply continued professional status. The initialism “SEE” is acceptable if space limits require.

ISO 27001 Certification: What It Is And Why You Need It

Michelle Drolet is CEO of Towerwall, a specialized cybersecurity firm offering compliance and professional cybersecurity solutions.

Organizations collect, store and process vast amounts of data today. Employee information, provider information, customer information, intellectual property, financial records, communication records—all common types of data that ordinarily exist in almost every business.

When organizations fail to secure or protect this data, it exposes them to a host of business risks like breaches, financial losses, reputational damage or even potential fines and prosecution.

To overcome this challenge, the International Standard Organization (ISO) created a comprehensive set of guidelines called the ISO/IEC 27001:2013 (a.k.a. ISO 27001). These standards help global businesses establish, organize, implement, monitor and maintain their information security management systems.

Unlike standards such as GDPR or HIPAA that primarily focus on one type of data (customer information or personal health privacy), the ISO 27001 encompasses all kinds of business data that is stored electronically, in hard copies (physical copies like paper and post) or even with third-party suppliers.

The ISO 27001 certification is applicable to businesses of all sizes and ensures that organizations are identifying and managing risks effectively, consistently and measurably.

The Three Cornerstones of ISO 27001

The ISO 27001 standard aims to secure people, processes and technology via three main cornerstones: confidentiality, integrity and availability (commonly referred to as the C-I-A triad).

1. Confidentiality translates to data and systems that must be protected against unauthorized access from people, processes or unauthorized applications. This involves use of technological controls like multifactor authentication, security tokens and data encryption.

2. Integrity means verifying the accuracy, trustworthiness and completeness of data. It involves use of processes that ensure data is free of errors and manipulation, such as ascertaining if only authorized personnel has access to confidential data.

3. Availability typically refers to the maintenance and monitoring of information security management systems (ISMSs). This includes removing any bottlenecks in security processes, minimizing vulnerabilities by updating software and hardware to the latest firmware, boosting business continuity by adding redundancy and minimizing data loss by adding back-ups and disaster recovery solutions.

How Businesses Benefit From ISO 27001 Certification

Organizations can enjoy a number of benefits from being ISO 27001 certified.

1. Certification helps to identify security gaps and vulnerabilities, protect data, avoid costly security breaches and Improve cyber resilience.

2. Certified organizations demonstrate that they take information security extremely seriously and have a structured approach towards planning, implementing and maintaining ISMS.

3. Certification serves as a seal of approval (or proof) that an independent third-party certified body is routinely assessing the security posture of the business and finds it to be effective.

4. It boosts confidence, demonstrates credibility and enhances brand reputation in the eyes of customers, partners and other stakeholders that their information is in safe hands.

5. It helps comply with other frameworks, standards and legislation such as GDPR, HIPAA, the NIST SP 800 series, the NIS Directive and others while helping to avoid costly fines and penalties.

Seven Steps That Help Organizations Achieve ISO 27001 Certification

Every organization has unique challenges, and your ISMS must adapt to your particular situation. These seven steps can help organizations achieve and maintain accreditation.

1. Secure commitment from stakeholders.

ISO 27001 certification requires organizations to adhere to strict rules and processes. This means that the business must undergo a number of changes to conform to the standard. Changes usually start at the top and trickle down, so it's important to identify the right stakeholders and secure buy-in. It's also important to set clear expectations and update all staff members to secure their cooperation as well.

2. Identify, classify and prioritize risks.

Conduct a detailed risk assessment of your ISMS and map security controls with those set out in the ISO 27001 standard. The goal of risk analysis should be to identify which risks exist for what system and determine its related areas of weakness. Prioritize these risks based on the level of threat they pose to the business.

3. Create a framework for identified risks.

Once risks are identified, it's important to select security measures that help mitigate those risks. All risks, controls and mitigation methods must be clearly defined and updated in the security policy. This helps organizations provide clear guidance to their stakeholders and create a strategic framework that serves as a foundation for information security in the organization.

4. Set clear goals for information security.

Once the areas of application are identified and controls selected, the next step is defining clear benchmarks and expectations. Indicators of performance and efficiency help businesses stay focused on achieving end goals.

5. Implement security controls.

Once the risks, controls and goals are penciled in, the business should hit the ground running. This involves not only the implementation of new processes and systems, but it might also involve a change in the workplace culture. It's possible that employees might resist change, so it's important that adequate investment is made in security awareness training programs that sensitize employees and help them embrace security habits and behaviors.

6. Continuously monitor and fine-tune as necessary.

As the business evolves, processes and systems also evolve, and so do risks. Businesses must continuously monitor and adjust security controls to align with these evolving risks. A good idea is to conduct a preliminary audit prior to the genuine certification audit to uncover hidden vulnerabilities that could negatively impact final certification.

7. Focus on continuously improving the ISMS.

Security is not a destination but a journey. You may have already been audited and certified by now, but it's important to continue monitoring, adjusting and improving your ISMS. The ISO 27001 mandates third-party audits (called monitoring audits) at planned intervals to ensure you still comply with the standard. Certification will only be renewed if monitoring audits are successful.

ISO 27001 is not only about protecting data; it's also about improving the business. Organizations that can harness these best practices will arrive at a superior security posture and enjoy significant competitive advantages.

The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification sets the standard for establishing Scrum theory, developing practical applications and rules, and leading teams and stakeholders through the development process.

CSM certification

Agile practices are being rapidly adopted in project and product management across many industries, and the ScrumMaster is an important leadership role in agile development to not only Improve workflow but increase your value as your career evolves. The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification, available through the Scrum Alliance, is an entry-level certification aimed at providing professionals with an awareness of the methodologies and values of Scrum, including team performance, accountability, and iterative progress. This certification is beneficial for people in product delivery who use the Scrum framework or those responsible for optimizing Scrum, including ScrumMasters and their teams.

Becoming a CSM offers individuals various valuable benefits, including increased recognition and credibility as a leader, additional opportunities within organizations with agile practices, leverage with future opportunities, and a demonstrated knowledge of Scrum principles.

CSM certification requirements

There are no prerequisites to enroll in CSM training but training is required to become certified. To earn a CSM credential, applicants must understand the Scrum framework and its principles and practices. The Scrum Alliance offers numerous resources on Scrum fundamentals, including the Scrum Alliance expert blog, member articles, videos, presentations, and reports.

Applicants must attend a CSM course, spread across two days in person or four online, taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer. The course provides a full overview of how to organize and support a Scrum team, and covers learning objectives including scope, Lean, agile, coaching, and service to the development team, product owner, and organization.

After completing the course, you have two opportunities within 90 days at no cost to pass the test through the Scrum Alliance portal and become a Certified ScrumMaster. After up to two attempts within 90 days, however, there’s a $25 charge for each additional attempt. Once you pass the CSM exam, you must submit a license agreement for the Scrum Alliance to accept, as well as complete your Scrum Alliance membership profile.

CSM certification costs

The initial certification fee for each student who successfully completes a Certified ScrumMaster course is paid by the Certified Scrum Trainers. The training course fees, which range from $350 to $1,000, also cover the following:

  • The first two years of certification
  • Two attempts to take the test (within 90 calendar days of attending the course)
  • Course materials provided by each instructor in class (must be Scrum Alliance approved)
  • The two-day course either online or in-person
  • Two-year membership to the Scrum Alliance community

CSM certification exam

The CSM test consists of 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions in 60 minutes. You’ll need to correctly answer a minimum of 37 questions for a passing grade of 74%. The test covers key Scrum elements, including general Scrum knowledge, Scrum roles, Scrum meetings, and Scrum artifacts. Applicants can only attempt the test twice without additional charge within the 90-day timeline of having completed the required two-day course. Otherwise, an additional $25 is required for each subsequent attempt.

CSM certification value

There are real benefits to getting CSM certified, not just for your organization but also on a personal level. The certification gives you a credential of demonstrable leadership value that goes beyond traditional project managers. Benefits also include improving team management, collaboration, and performance to ensure project work progresses seamlessly and efficiently. It also ensures Scrum is being applied correctly and consistently, and that everyone is aligned in their understanding of the framework. Plus, CSM certification provides a career-boosting benefit and opens up opportunities for professional growth.

It’s also about being part of a community. After completing all the steps and becoming a CSM, you’ll receive a two-year membership to the Scrum Alliance and can join local user groups and online social networks, as well as get access to discounts on gatherings, and more.

CSM certification renewal

Your CSM must be renewed every two years. Doing so requires a total of anywhere from 10 to 40 hours of Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and a renewal fee, which varies depending on the certification and SEUs required. Staying up to date requires staying current through SEUs. For every hour you spend on continuing education, you receive one SEU, and SEUs fall into four subcategories: events, learning, volunteering, and other independent means.

Eligible activities include the time you spend reading articles, volunteering, attending events, and taking courses. Examples of SEU options include watching a community webinar, giving back to the agile community through volunteer work, participating in a local user group, attending a global or regional Scrum gathering, and writing a blog post or reading a book about Scrum/agile. As an additional benefit, taking the CSM earns PMI-certified professionals Professional Development Units (PDUs).

CSM certification training

Applicants must attend a 16-hour CSM course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) prior to taking the CSM exam, either spread across two days in person or up to four online. CSTs are the only trainers approved by the Scrum Alliance to prepare you for the exam, and courses provided by CSTs are listed on the Scrum Alliance course search page. And even though live online options are available in addition to in-person training across the globe, self-paced online training is not available at this time.

CSM training should cover Scrum principles, the Scrum framework, definitions, how to run a Scrum project, how to work with teams, how Scrum fits into your organization, and the various roles involved with Scrum. By the end of your training you should be able to understand:

  • Foundations of Scrum and rules
  • How to act as a ScrumMaster for Scrum teams and stakeholders
  • Servant-leadership
  • How to effectively use Scrum
  • How to increase the effectiveness of Scrum at your organization

Once your training is complete, you can expect your instructor to assist with creating an account for you to access a CSM test test site.

Sample CSM test questions

To prepare for the CSM exam, there are many online practice tests with questions that might look similar to these on your test including:

  • Tracking project impediments in a Scrum project is whose primary responsibility?
  • Which concept of the following is NOT defined in the Scrum framework?
  • Which of the following main events are defined in the Scrum framework?
  • Who is responsible for prioritizing the product backlog?

CSM certification salaries and jobs

Becoming a CSM can also provide a big boost to your annual salary. The range for ScrumMasters varies depending on title and location, but Glassdoor calculates an average of $128,000 and some roles can command as high as $165,000. Some such as Agile coach, Scrum trainer, Senior ScrumMaster, Agile Scrum coach, and Lead ScrumMaster are typical titles that can be expected, depending where you are on your career track.

Having achieved ScrumMaster certification opens up doors to more senior positions, and regardless of the role you choose, all indications point to a secure and stable future full of opportunities.

Course Certification

What is course certification?

The purpose of the USATF course certification program is to produce road race courses of accurately measured distances.

For any road running performance to be accepted as a record or be nationally ranked, it must be run on a USATF-certified course. In addition, the certification program is very important to the average road racer, as well as those of exceptional speed. Most runners like to compare performances run on different courses, and such comparisons are difficult if course distances are not reliable. No one can truly establish a personal best if the course distance is not accurate.

What is a USATF Sanction?

A USATF Sanction is an official designation issued by USATF, through a local Association, which approves and licenses the holding of a competitive track and field, long distance running, or race-walking event in the United States. USATF Sanctioned Events are provided with liability insurance. Only USATF Sanctioned Events are eligible for National and World Records.

Learn more here.

Why Do I need both?

For a road running performance to not only be accepted by USATF but recognized and ratified by USATF, the performance must have occurred on both a USATF certified course and a USATF sanctioned event. With new standards and requirements for world and national ranking, it is imperative that events have both a USATF course certification and a USATF Sanction for athletes to recognize the full benefit of running at a particular road race. While both programs work independently of one another, only events that have both a USATF course certification and a USATF Sanction are record eligible.

For athletes, check here for the list of sanctioned events to see if your next race is record eligible.

How It Works

Employers in all sectors value a credential that speaks to your skills as a professional. Certification through ESA is a way for ecologists at all levels of education and training to add a credential to their resume, demonstrate their expertise, and exhibit their skill to potential employers, clients, or colleagues.

Earning a certification from ESA isn’t a one-time, set-and-forget kind of thing; their program seeks to involve certified ecologists of all career fields in the work of the Society. They offer networking, ample professional development, opportunities to mentor or be mentored, as well as much as they can provide to help you succeed in your career. And we’re always open to suggestions!

Certified ecologist Arona Bender poses at the side of a lake in the autumn“As an aspiring marine biologist, it is important to me to develop interdisciplinary skills to better manage the environmental challenges they face in today’s world. I chose to be certified to establish my scientific credibility and demonstrate within the science community and society that I have developed the necessary education, skills, and experience required to apply ecological principles to my professional career.

— Arona Bender, Certified Ecologist in Training

The Application

Our efforts to Improve the certification program continue! We’re now accepting rolling applications with no fixed due date. You are free to begin an application at any time and complete it at any time — just expect to get reminder emails from us until you submit!

We strive to make application easy and standard across all levels — this page lists the materials you’ll need, and you should check this primer on the application for guidance.

Applications that are missing letters of recommendation are considered incomplete until both letters have been received. Please note that letters or any other missing documentation must be sent within 6 months since the application was submitted or the application will be rejected. If extenuating circumstances arise, please send an email to cert@nullesa.org

Fees to Apply

We strive to make sure that their certification is one that’s affordable to get, especially for people early in their careers. ESA members enjoy significant savings.

The Review Process

Reviews will likewise be conducted on a rolling basis. Expect to hear from us no more than 60 days from the date of your application, and likely much sooner.

In some cases, an application will require clarification or escalation to review by their Board of Professional Certification. In the case that you are asked to provide more information, they request an acknowledgment within 30 days, and that requested materials be submitted within 90 days of the original date of the request. In instances of escalation, their Board will be reviewing on a roughly monthly basis, so outcomes will likewise be shared within 60 days of that escalation. There may be some instances that require a full review of the full Board, in which case some additional delay may occur, but staff will communicate the status of all applications as regularly and thoroughly as possible.

Applications that are missing letters of recommendation are considered incomplete until both letters have been received. Letters or any other missing documentation must be sent within 6 months since the application was submitted or the application will be rejected.

Certified Senior Ecologist Kris Hallinger poses in the field, holding a net and a rock amidst natural surroundings“Being certified as a senior ecologist by ESA for over 15 years has provided me with a unique level of credibility and achievement in the field of ecology. This certification not only demonstrates my expertise but also assures the individuals I work with that I have met the rigorous standards endorsed by a national professional body. It serves as a testament to my level of education and professional experience, which is invaluable in establishing trust within the science community and society at large.”

— Kris D. Hallinger, Certified Senior Ecologist

Appeals Procedure
A decision of the Board of Professional Certification may be appealed in writing to the ESA executive director, who will initiate the appeals process through the ESA Professional Ethics and Appeals Committee. The Board of Professional Certification may be engaged in discussion of a potential appeal prior to its official submission to the PEAC.

penalty fee.

Certifications will be dated retroactively to the first day of the month that the application was approved and run until the last day of the preceding month 5 years hence. Holders of certifications from the old system will keep their June 30 expiration dates unless they opt to recertify or upgrade earlier in the calendar (and are encouraged to do so).

If you’ve completed the steps necessary to upgrade before the 5 years are up, you’re free to apply to upgrade when you’re ready. This can include a new degree or crossing an experience threshold. Your CEU clock resets if you upgrade early.

Support

ESA is invested in the career success of all ecologists, and this certification program is well-supported within the Member Services Office. From the day you think about applying, you have access to program staff who work hard to make managing your professional development easy and to earn important industry credibility for your credentials.

You’ll receive newsletters, be on their listserv, be invited to networking and feedback events both virtually and at ESA events like the Annual Meeting. Your input will be sought on program enhancements. And if you join, you’ll have opportunities to volunteer within the Society in various ways, from committees to sections to the Council and Governing Board. We want you to succeed.

If you need anything, get in touch with us at cert@nullesa.org. The staff and Board of Professional Certification will do everything they can to help.

Continuing Education

If your ESA Certification or recertification was last approved in 2021 or after, you are required to complete 44 continuing education units during the 5 years of your certification. Ecologists that were newly certified or recertified before 2021 do not need to self-report CEUs until their next recertification. Beginning in 2026, all recertifications and upgrades will require meeting the CEU requirements.

You will report your CEU directly in their membership system, which ensures clean records. You can earn CEU by participating in various ESA functions (from the Annual Meeting to leadership to webinars), but you are also required to include activities hosted by other organizations. This is to ensure that any certified ecologist’s professional development fits their professional needs.

Once you’re certified, you will be included on their dedicated listserv for certified ecologists and will receive a regular newsletter. Both will list continuing education opportunities, from both ESA and their approved providers, and invite you to participate in networking and feedback opportunities. They organize meetups, plus scientific and technical opportunities for certified ecologists, at the Annual Meeting and always encourage certified ecologists to submit proposals and abstracts for those events and any others that ESA holds. They also encourage certified ecologists to join the Society and seek leadership opportunities in committees and task forces, sections and chapters, and the Board of Professional Certification and Governing Board. This is part of ESA’s commitment to Extend the Tent and be the quality professional home of all ecologists, regardless of career field and level.

Disciplinary Procedure

The Board of Professional Certification, with approval of the Professional Ethics and Appeals Committee, shall have the authority to censure a certification, to suspend certification for a stated period, or to revoke certification on the finding that an individual has willfully violated the Code of Ethics or misrepresented the facts at the time of certification. Such a finding may be reached by concluding that an allegation of improper deportment is true. Such an allegation may be presented to the Board in writing, by any member of the Ecological Society of America. Anonymous allegations will not be entertained. Anyone named a party to such proceeding shall be informed in a timely manner of the evidence brought forward and be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.

The Board will forward all material to the Professional Ethics and Appeals Committee. After review of the case by the Committee and the Board, the Board will render a written decision informing the certified ecologist, the individual who initiated the allegation, and the Governing Board. Any such action of the Board may be appealed to the Governing Board, whose decision will be final.

Certification Procedures

Course Measurement and Certification Procedures

Expiration/Renewal Policy

Because courses degrade over time, the USATF Road Running Technical Council decided in 1992 that all certifications would expire automatically 10 years after the year of issue. Initially, expired courses could be renewed upon testimony that the course was still in use and had not been altered. Then, in 2000, RRTC decided that such testimony is not adequate to overcome the uncertainty that inevitably creeps into every course; therefore, all courses must simply expire after 10 years, without any possibility of renewal.

The non-renewable policy adopted in 2000 was phased in over a 10-year period. That period ended at the end of 2011. All courses that were renewed at any time have expired. Expired courses are no longer renewable, but they must be re-measured in order to be recertified.
