Enterprises use an enormous amount of Software as a service (SaaS) applications. According to one estimate, the largest organizations use as many as 371, a 32% increase from 2021. However, these apps are often disparate among departments with no clear clarity or oversight into whoâs using what. And â whether intentionally or unintentionally â they can very easily be misconfigured, presenting a slew of security issues. âSaaS applications today are so complex, you almost need a dedicated expert in each one to secure them,â Joseph Thacker, principal AI engineer for SaaS Security Posture Management (SSPM) provider AppOmni, told VentureBeat. âNo organizations have that type of expertise, so you end up with overworked security teams trying to go in and understand all the security settings.â To help enterprises handle all this sprawl, AppOmni today announced its new trademarked tool AskOmni, a generative AI-powered SaaS security assistant. Users can ask critical security questions and the system, in plain language, will report back critical data and remediation steps. VB EventThe AI Impact Tour Getting to an AI Governance Blueprint â Request an invite for the Jan 10 event. âItâs effectively a SaaS security expert,â said Thacker. Too much complexity, noiseEnterprises donât prioritize SaaS security enough, Thacker contended, even when thatâs where their core IP and sensitive data reside. But organizations and security teams need to change their mindsets when it comes to SaaS, he said â threat actors can access data directly as opposed to attacking a device or framework, making it a âwhole different ecosystem.â The amalgam of apps are difficult to rein in, and the number of security findings and alerts coming in can feel like facing an avalanche. So simply understanding what to tackle is the first big problem. âItâs shadow IT all over again,â said Thacker, adding that âAI is the new shadow IT.â Added to this is the fact that Salesforce, Microsoft 365 and others have thousands of developers pushing changes every day. âWhere do you start?â said Thacker. âYouâve got complexity, a step below that you have a security team that doesnât even know whatâs in the wild and being used by your staff. How can you keep up?â While alerts can be overwhelming, much of it is just noise, he noted. âThereâs hardly anything malicious going on at scale, but there are small things.â Furthermore, permissions management can be extremely difficult. For instance, Thacker posited, that if you want to check username-to-admin correlation in audit logs across SaaS apps, how do you do that across apps where field names are all different? (In one, a username might be âuser_name,â in another âusername,â and in a third âusername1,â with no consistency.) âMost employees have access to way too much data,â said Thacker, but tracking that down can be problematic and sometimes unfeasible. AskOmni a SaaS security expertTo address these problems, AskOmni â which is available today as a tech preview and will be rolled out in phases in 2024 â uses gen AI and natural language queries for common SaaS security decisions. Users can ask the system questions to understand what SaaS apps theyâre using and AppOmniâs security capabilities. The user-friendly platform performs contextual analysis and aggregates disparate data points to identify issues and assess risk, then alerts in plain language critical issues and walks users through remediation steps. AskOmni pulls in relevant findings on alerts for context and can surface attack chains, Thacker explained. Going forward, it can notify administrators about issues caused by privilege overprovisioning based on account access patterns, user permissions and access levels, sensitive data or compliance requirements. It also flags new threats, explaining potential consequences and offering remediation steps. One of AskOmniâs biggest asks, Thacker said, is âIf I want to secure âXâ environment, how can I do that in AppOmni?â In response, the system will use context on how AppOmni prefers to secure Slack, for instance, pulling from Slack documentation to enhance its answer. Or, it can interact with the Azure Active Directory and write a Powershell script to secure a particular component of Microsoft 365. âIt can walk you through remediation advice and write remediation scripts,â said Thacker. âKiller featuresâ are still aspirational, but on the horizonAskOmni is still in its early stages, Thacker pointed out, but down the line, the goal is that it will be able to handle âreally grandiose questions.â This could include âWhat should I remediate first?,â or âThis user was just let go, what SaaS apps did he use and how do I secure those?â âThe killer feature will be when they can ask a single question about the entire AppOmni instance,â said Thacker. While giving AI the ability to access all data in a tenant is still aspirational at this point, it is the future. Models will only continue to Strengthen and become less expensive with time, Thacker pointed out. âWeâre barely scratching the surface of whatâs possible for AI,â he said. He added that âso many people are âDebbie Downersâ about what AI can do.â Focus is often placed on what AI canât do, but those âcanâtsâ can be overcome with more context and examples and âharnesses or libraries wrapped around the LLMâ that the model can use to shore up its weaknesses, he said. Ultimately, âAI is going to revolutionize and make everything higher utility, lower effort so that they can spend more time solving new problems.â VentureBeat's mission is to be a digital town square for technical decision-makers to gain knowledge about transformative enterprise technology and transact. Discover their Briefings. FIRST ON FOX: The House Small Business Committee chairman and four of his GOP colleagues sent a letter to the Biden Department of Commerce demanding answers on the 90-day pause on issuing gun export licenses. Chairman Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, led the letter to Commerce Undersecretary for Industry and Security Alan Estevez regarding the department's pause on issuing gun export licenses. "The Biden Administration is continuing its relentless attack on small businesses with yet another decision that will only make their entrepreneursâ lives more difficult," Williams told Fox News Digital. SECOND AMENDMENT GROUP TO URGE CONGRESS TO OVERTURN ATF PISTOL BRACE RULE "Moreover, this decision could very well be in violation of their Second Amendment â which I will not stand for," Williams said. "I am eager to hear from the (Bureau of Industry and Security) on this issue and hope to have a detailed response with their justification." In the letter, the lawmakers warned that the 90-day "prohibition places a substantial burden on those businesses and individuals that rely on exporting as a source of income and for manufacturers of weapons and ammunition." "It appears that the Department of Commerce and [the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS)] may not have properly considered the impact of this decision on American businesses, especially smaller entities, nor sufficiently rationalized its decision to comply with the Constitution and its principles," the lawmakers wrote. "The Committee is unsure of how to properly characterize the document the BIS made its announcement with, as it is listed as a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) document. A FAQ document hardly seems like the proper venue for announcing a restriction that touches and concerns a fundamental right enumerated in the Bill of Rights. "Further, this announcement does not adequately explain the basis for why such a prohibition is necessary." The lawmakers pointed out that the "FAQ documentâs only rationale for this action is that it âwill enable the Department to more effectively assess and mitigate risk of firearms being diverted to entities, or activities that promote regional instability, violate human rights, or fuel criminal activities.â" The Republicans also wrote that while "these reasons could potentially be sufficient if fully explained, BIS has not articulated why these things are of concern, to what extent an issue exists, nor does the BIS tie this action, either directly or indirectly, to any ongoing foreign policy issues." "Additionally, in this order the BIS did not prohibit licensure for the export of Torture Devices. ⌠If the BISâs order is based on the fear of human rights abuses, this seems a more obvious place to start," the lawmakers wrote. The lawmakers wrote that BIS's actions "are not rooted in a delegation from Congress" as in legal precedence, and that "the document contains far too little information to support a claim of unilateral executive authority." "Whatâs more, this FAQ document borders on carrying the force of law, meaning it may require an actual rulemaking to effectuate lawfully under the Administrative Procedure Act," the lawmakers noted. They referenced a D.C. Circuit Court's ruling that found "that a guidance document issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which outlined when and how it would accept applications for plans to conduct certain types of waste disposal, carried the force of law, and required a rulemaking." "Rulemakings which have a significant impact on a substantial number of small entities are required to comply with the Regulatory Flexibility Act, and explain the rules impact on small entities," the lawmakers wrote. "Additionally, this âpauseâ serves as an outright ban on new, potentially small exporters entering the market," the lawmakers warned. "Additionally, the FAQ document lacks important details and is difficult to find on the BISâs or Department of Commerceâs website. "It is unclear how the BIS anticipates businesses, especially smaller businesses, would even understand that this moratorium has been put in place, let alone understand how to comply." The lawmakers peppered Estevez with questions regarding the pause, including one seeking an "explanation of the constitutional basis and rationale used by the BIS to determine it had the authority to establish this prohibition." From August 12 to August 20, 2023, there have been more than 3,270 canceled flights, according to reporting from USAToday and FlightAware. While America maintains the safest aviation system in the world, the agency that manages their skies has been without a permanent leader since late 2022, when Stephen Dickson, a Trump appointee, stepped down as administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.). In early September, the Biden administration nominated Michael G. Whitaker to lead the agency. If confirmed by the Senate, Whitaker will take control of the F.A.A. at a time of prevalent staff shortages, continued struggle between airline labor unions and management, and some of the highest demand for air travel since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. On his first day as F.A.A. administrator, Whitakerâs likely to face the challenge of building a strong commercial airplane pilot workforce. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are currently close to 17,000 openings for airline and commercial pilots in the U.S., and not enough trained pilots. Additionally, the United States is projected to have a shortfall of 8,165 pilots. This creates a dilemma for mainline carriers and exacerbates problems for regional carriers who are losing their licensed pilots in the mainline shortage. Whitaker currently serves as C.E.O. of Supernal, a Hyundai Motor Group company thatâs designing an electric advanced air mobility vehicle. Before his time at Supernal, Whitaker served as deputy F.A.A. administrator and group C.E.O. at InterGlobe â India's largest travel conglomerate. He also spent more than 15 years in executive leadership at United Airlines. Such experience proves to be of some value to Omar Brock, a licensed commercial pilot who launched the Brock Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping inner-city youth explore careers in aviation. Through the Brock Foundation, Brock is taking his passion for aerospace to the next generation. With a model centered on mentoring young pilots of color, he has created an aviation pipeline that starts at free events around the country where young people are exposed to flying. Participants then receive free ground training through a partnership with Microsoft. Brock started as a commercial pilot in 2020 after working as an airline flight attendant to pay his way through flight training. With an estimated 3 percent of the commercial pilots being Black and only 5 percent being Latino or Latina, Brock believes expanding the pilot pipeline to communities of color is a surefire way to solve current and future retail pilot shortages. "[T]he barriers to aviation are the same today as they were years ago. For young future pilots of color, they lack access to exposure, resources, and industry mentors,â Brock said. "Once they check off the boxes on the ground training and providing mentorship, their programs push participants into the flight training process.â The current commercial pilot shortage facing the United States has been years in the making. Itâs a result of COVID-19 early retirement packages that airlines offered pilots to curb long-term costs. Other factors include mandatory commercial pilot retirement at 65, fleet expansion, and a new federal law that increases co-pilot minimum flight hours. These changes have also caused airlines to trim their pilot training programs, which they are now trying to return to scale. Wage disparities and potential strike action have also caused a decline in skilled pilot availability. As such, some airlines have discontinued servicing regional airports throughout the country. As aerospace expert Geoff Murray explained in his report for international management consulting firm Oliver Wyman, this turn of events has compelled airlines to make serious overtures. "Pilots started seeing improved salaries and a renewed focus on pilot quality of life, a faster career progression timeline, and more job security," Murray said in his report. "For regional airline pilots, salaries are as much as 86% higher than they were just three years ago; for the larger carriers, they're up modestly, but accurate labor agreements and those expected to be negotiated in 2023 suggest significant increases to come," the report continued. Murray, a partner at Oliver Wyman, further explained the change to Forbes. "Nearly overnight, with the outbreak of COVID-19, the conversation shifted from shortage to surplus,â Murray said. âFor carriers that were struggling with pilot supply, this has provided a momentary reprieve.â However, the aviation industry still has a ways to go. Rally For Air Service, a national advocacy group for regional airports, said that, despite rising passenger demand, 75% of U.S. airports have less air service today than before the pandemic. "Airports have lost an average of 31% of their flights, a figure that has worsened and will worsen without action," Rally For Air Service said in a statement. "Aircraft[s] have already been parked and will continue to be parked, causing significant disruption to small communities and Essential Air Service markets that rely on smaller aircrafts to keep them connected to the U.S. air transportation system,â the statement read. Thatâs why the Brock Foundation partners with several high schools to speed up the pipeline and provide inflight training earlier for minority students. Its flight training program helps to lay the foundation for certification, licensure and ultimately the commercial pilot designation. "When they do engagement in communities of color, they are the first encounter that most of their students have with a Black pilot," Brock said. Through a test programâA.S.A.T.P.âat Morrow High School in an Atlanta suburb, the Brock Foundation is collaborating with the school district to turn students who are interested in aviation from student pilots to commercial pilots by graduation. "In this program, they go in two to three days a week, and they teach the private pilot ground school curriculum," Brock said. "We work with sophomores, and in their senior year, they have committed to creating commercial pilots." As the nation continues its search for more pilots, Brock and his colleagues at the Brock Foundation hope to expand programming by providing prospective pilots the ground and physical aircraft training necessary to gain commercial pilot certification. Amid the current crisis, Brock sees a bigger opening for his foundation and the young people they reach. "We want to open a Black-owned airport,â Brock exclaimed. âAnd they want to have a space where they take in the future aviators of tomorrow, and they want to acquire planes.â Murray called programs like the Brock Foundation a remedy for the current staffing shortage. "One obvious answer would be to recruit more women and minorities â something that has not proven easy for the industry to date, Murray said. "Besides an improved value proposition for new recruits and expanding the pool of candidates, carriers will also need to explore other solutions such as better sponsorship of candidates to make the career path more accessible." For Brock and his team, accessibility to aviation for students of color is about exposing them to another feeling of freedom. "Being up in the air and looking down at the world and everyone under you. And literally cloud surfing, it's a feeling of freedom that every young aviator should be exposed to,â Brock said. With Whitakerâs nomination pending in the Senate and a more significant push for equity inclusion from the White House and the Department of Transportation, the Brock Foundation could be on the cutting edge of introducing more young Black and Brown commercial pilots to the freedom of the friendly skies. SOUTH London Healthcare Trustâs new administrator Caroline Taylor was in charge of NHS Croydon when there was a deliberate cover-up of a ÂŁ28m black hole in its budget, it has been revealed. Ms Taylor has been appointed to oversee the trust as it prepares for dissolution later this year. And once the SLHT - which runs Orpington Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth in Woolwich, Sidcup's Queen Mary's and the PRUH in Farnborough - is dissolved later this year, she will continue as an implementation director until 2016. But she still has questions to answer about her time at Croydon Primary Care Trust. Members of the South West London Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (JHOSC) are urging the Secretary of State for Health to compel her to answer crucial questions that remain unanswered about her time there. They say the refusal of Ms Taylor, former finance director Stephen OâBrien and interim deputy director of finance Mark Phillips to supply evidence means they do not know the full extent of financial mismanagement at Croydon Primary Care Trust (PCT), despite a seven-month investigation. The committee, formed by six south-west London councils to probe why the PCT reported a ÂŁ5.54m surplus in its 2010/11 budget when it was actually ÂŁ22.4m in debt, said there was "significant motivation for senior officers to disguise the extent of the financial incompetence at NHS Croydon to safeguard their own positions". The report, published yesterday (April 29), also criticised the NHS for failing to hold individuals to account for the overspend and flatly contradicted the findings of a 2012 NHS-commissioned Ernst & Young report which lay the blame on a systems failure rather than staff. JHOSC chairman Councillor Jason Cummings said: "What has become clear from the committeeâs review is that the accounting errors were deliberately hidden. âThis was not the result of any system failure but a consequence of the action of individuals, who have still to explain their actions. "We have been faced by a wall of silence from key witnesses in the NHS and subsequently there are still some questions that remain unanswered. "In particular, they still donât know why the accounts were altered and whether patients had been directly affected. "This cannot be right, and they now call on the Department of Health to carry out rigorous investigation and ensure the relevant officers can be publicly held to account." | ||||||||
