Their standard model bicycles are available year-round. Limited-edition bicycle models are released several times a year to boutique retailers domestically. Adventure Works has had the most success with their limited-edition bicycles. These bicycles have high margins, are in high demand, and have a strong following with the younger generation biking community. Current environment General Adventure Works expects to triple their manufacturing capabilities in the next few years due to increasing demand. The company plans to invest in Dynamics 365 Finance, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, and the Power Platform products to migrate from a custom-built enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution and Microsoft Excel worksheets. Adventure Works sells only to the United States and Canada. Despite their limited market, they cannot keep up with current demand. Over time, they want to expand their market to remain profitable. Adventure Works has no capabilities or budget to undertake any development beyond Excel formula-level tasks. Bicycle manufacturing Bicycle models are measured and reported against how well a single model performs as a sum of all the variations of that model. For example, the Street Kid YOLO model sold 25,000 units in 2019 across all variations of the product, but the Purple Female frame made up 30 percent of that modelâs sales. The Street Kid YOLO models sell in different volumes depending on the market. The creation of production orders for bicycles occurs monthly and is based on historical sales. Each part of a bicycleâs assembly occurs at a different station in the Adventure Works production facility. A piece of paper that has eight sections accompanies a bicycle throughout the manufacturing process. As each step is completed, the respective section is completed and signed off by a production worker. The completed paper is used in the put-away process by the warehouse workers. Financials The standard model and limited-edition bicycle teams are separate operating units within the manufacturing division. Financials are tracked and reported separately even though they are produced and sold in the same sales channels. Updates to the standard model bicycle models are created when a part for a bicycle becomes unavailable. This can change the cost of the product. An updated model of a bicycle with new parts will be maintained as a new item and have a new price. However, it will look like the exact same product to retailers and distributors. Manufacturing process $13$10 The bicycle manufacturing process is shown in the following graphic: Limited-edition bicycle process The limited-edition bicycles are made up of an Adventure Works custom frame with all other parts created by local artists and manufacturers. Each bicycle has a unique set of new items that make up the bill of materials (BOM) because all parts are created to specification. A single pilot limited-edition bicycle is created as a proof of concept. Adventure Works occasionally reuses components from existing bicycles, but most limited-edition bicycles are made of handcrafted components designed to specifications. Each limited-edition bicycle is built, and hand signed by a single Adventure Works artisan. Sales price must be auto calculated after the cost price is derived. Before creating the proof of concept limited-edition bicycle, the approximate sales price needs to be determined through a cost-plus 20 percent calculation. All items except for the frame in the prototype process are considered finished items and can be sold individually. The frame items require modifications in accordance with the manufacturing process as well as painting. Each Adventure Works limited-edition bicycle artisan is scheduled to create a specific number of bicycles in a production run that must be completed by a certain date. Limited-edition bicycle artisans work exclusively on a given run of limited-edition bicycles and are not able to work on other tasks. Limited-edition bicycle BOM assembly process The prototype process for the limited-edition bicycles is shown in the following graphic: $13$10 Requirements General Adventure Works will consist of three legal entities: the primary legal entity of the United States (AWUS), sales in Canada (AWCA), and an international expansion (AWIN). AWIN must be able to sell only standard model bicycles. AWUS and AWCA must be able to sell both standard model and limited-edition bicycles. Warehouse workers must use the Warehouse Management mobile application to manage all inventory inbound and outbound from the warehouse. Bicycle manufacturing $13$10 The handlebars, back wheels, and front wheels must not change for any of the bicycle model configurations. Standard model bicycle production scheduling must be configured to start as soon as possible. Bicycle components must be automatically reserved when the item is released to the production floor. Standard model bicycle production must be automatically created on a predefined schedule. As soon as bicycles are completed, they must be available to fulfill the backlog of orders. Limited-edition bicycle production must be configured to meet the end date for when the bicycles must be completed. Production orders need to track financials by standard model or limited-edition bicycle manufacturing teams. The system must log the immediate consumption of BOMs for traceability. All inventory is warehouse enabled. Finished goods are reported as finished by the warehouse worker who picks up the finished product from the packaging area. Finished products must automatically have put-away work completed for them. New limited-edition bicycle process Adventure Works is creating a new, limited-edition bicycle to commemorate the companyâs tenth anniversary. The limited-edition bicycle will be designed for charity events and be produced for the summer season. The bicycle must be available in menâs, womenâs, and unisex frame styles. It will be painted in one of 50 hand- painted designs representing the charity of the customerâs choosing. A limited run of 100 bicycles must be created. The limited-edition bicycles must use the same production process as the standard model bicycles. The limited-edition bicycles must use the same parts used for previous limited-edition bicycles, except for the unique paint colors. Frames must be painted in-house. Five painting options are available only in the unisex frame style. New limited-edition bicycle orders Customers must be able to place sales orders for the item in the chosen frame configuration, including style and color. When an order for the new limited-edition bicycle is created, payment must be provided. An approval for an order must exist for the order to be processed. Upon approval of an order, production must start immediately and not require re-entry of data. DRAG DROP $13$10 You need to create the new summer limited edition bicycle in Dynamics 365 in preparation for taking orders. Which four actions should you perform in sequence? Project management and information technology (IT) have a complicated relationship. While itâs not exactly a core subject for related academic curricula, project management is something that touches deeply and directly on most IT activities. That probably explains why project management certifications command a constant presence among the top 10 top-paying certifications of interest to IT professionals over the past decade. Given the incredible popularity and demand for project management skills and knowledge, it is no surprise that one can find commercial project management training courses to fit nearly every schedule and budget. But that doesnât mean there arenât good choices available for free training. In this article, youâll learn about some of the best project management training systems and certifications to help you become a better IT manager. What are some free project management training options? An online education phenomenon is reshaping the training landscape as they know it. Itâs based on free online training courses called MOOCs, short for massively online open courses. These are housed on open, high-volume, high-capacity, cloud-based training platforms, such as edX, Moodle and Udemy. While monetization of training is possible on some of these platforms, a MOOC is supposed to be free for the taking. Organizations or institutions that offer such free courses can still charge fees for testing, certificates of completion and other add-ons, but the basic course materials remain free to all interested parties. Hereâs a list of some of the best project management offerings. Cybrary Course CYB-2010: Project Management ProfessionalÂProfessional instructor Vincent McKeown delivers a 10-module series of video lectures, each of which maps to a domain in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) for the Project Management Institute Project Management Professional (PMI PMP) certification. At just over five hours, the course is neither incredibly detailed nor extensive, but it does provide a useful orientation for those just getting started on the subject. ALISON: Diploma in Project ManagementWith more than 282,000 students having either taken or now taking this course, this MOOC has seen some serious traction to mostly positive reviews. The course contains three modules, covers 28 syllabus and takes 10 to 15 hours to complete. While it doesnât map directly to the PMP or other project management credentials, it does provide a useful introduction to the subject matter. Other ALISON courses on project managementÂAs a full-fledged MOOC delivery platform, ALISON offers a project management page among its course listings. In addition to the previous diploma item, it has courses about project management fundamentals, skills, resource management and a host of other topics. UdemyÂUdemy courses are not always or even often free, but many are inexpensive. A search for project management on Udemy produces hundreds of courses. Most cost between $20 and $50 each, although they found many as low as $10 and a few on the high end at $200. A search on PMP produces more than 2,600 free and paid courses. Youâll spend a lot of time fiddling with the search engine to find what you want, but there are plenty of choices here. edX.orgÂEdX gets many of its project management courses via Microsoft these days. As a result, despite a huge catalog of offerings, many of the project management courses relate to Microsoft Project and Microsoft Project Portfolio Management (PPM). They did find a few project management courses from institutions such as the University of Adelaide, the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Australian National University and the University of Washington. The best online project management software can help companies organize their work and monitor tasks big and small. MIT OpenCourseWareÂA search on MIT OpenCourseWare produces thousands of results for project management courses, many of which show a profound focus on engineering and business management topics. Nevertheless, thereâs a lot of interesting stuff here thatâs well worth trawling through for those seeking top-notch offerings. ProjectManager.comÂProjectManager.com has 30 guides designed to help you learn the basics of project management. Inside many of these guides are video tutorials that provide more information about their respective topics. Youâll need some time and willpower to stitch a curriculum together here, but thereâs lots of good material available. The company also maintains a YouTube channel, where you can easily find training videos. YouTubeÂYouTube is rife with project management training videos. Searches on YouTube for âproject managementâ or âPMPâ produce hundreds of thousands of results. MOOC ListÂThe MOOC List allows you to execute a consolidated search for trainings available in the next 30 days. Most courses are offered with specific starting dates, so this database points only to relevant courses starting in the near term. Oxford Home Study Short CourseÂThe Oxford Home Study Centre offers several project management courses that introduce candidates to the many aspects of project management, project life cycles and project management roles. A certificate is issued at the end of each course. Saylor AcademyÂSaylor Academy has two project management courses: one in the business field and the other in software engineering. The first course requires 62 hours and covers the key elements of project management and its more technical details. The software engineering course totals 41 hours and presents syllabus ranging from life cycle models to design quality assurance. Upon completing either course, youâll receive a free certificate. GoSkillsÂGoSkills pulls up 30 project management courses when searching for project management. These courses span basic frameworks, software programs and process control. Each course includes video tutorials along with tests and quizzes to help you prepare for project management exams and earn learning hours toward your certification. Various online platforms offer free training, lessons and certification prep for deeper dives into project management skills and practices. Itâs just a matter of sorting through the available options to find the ones that appeal to you. What are some low-cost project management training options? If youâre willing to spend a small sum of money, there are some appealing low-cost project management training options. For example, most Coursera courses are $49, and multicourse bundles are also available (such as UC Irvineâs Introduction to Project Management Principles and Practices). The Master of Project Academy offers numerous free online training courses for project management certifications, such as the PMP, CAPM, Six Sigma and Prince 2. However, for $397 per month, you can purchase an all-course bundle that includes all Master of Project Academy courses. Like UC Irvine, many colleges and universities offer courses aimed at the PMP and related PMI certifications, such as CAPM and PMP add-ons for portfolio and program management, as well as other credentials for risk management, scheduling and so forth. These courses cost the same as other college courses and are taught in a similar fashion. That puts them halfway between low-cost/no-cost options and short-term, higher-priced intensive courses from traditional training outlets such as Global Knowledge, New Horizons and Learning Tree. What are some higher-priced project management training options?Hundreds to thousands of other offerings for project management training at higher costs are readily available around the globe. For PMP or other PMI certifications, thereâs a whole network of partners that teach an official curriculum. Some are in academia; others offer purely commercial courses. All the biggest training companies offer PMP and related certification training, as do the major online training players (such as LinkedIn Learning, Simplilearn and Pluralsight). Our project management software buying guide is designed to help small businesses find the right product for managing their operations. What skills do I need to become a project manager?Project management software is at the heart of most IT activities, including system design and development, deployment, and maintenance. All of these routine activities can also be characterized as projects â some of massive scope and duration, others more quick and evanescent. Indeed, thatâs why project management skills and knowledge are in high demand among IT professionals in nearly every specialty and area of technical focus in that field. The best project managers possess a great eye for detail and are highly organized. Masters of soft skills, they are clear, concise and effective communicators in both speaking and writing. These professionals are excellent problem-solvers and negotiators. Itâs also helpful if they have an understanding of cross-functional areas â such as supply chain, HR and resource constraints; procurement; finance; and change orders â which may impact overall project outcomes. What are some popular project management methodologies? As a project management professional, youâll find no shortage of methodologies. There is no one ârightâ methodology, and the one you choose to practice will be influenced by factors like the type of project, industry sector and your businessâs preference. When choosing project management training materials, look for courses that complement the methodology you want to practice. These are some of the most popular project management styles and frameworks:
While project management is all about managing workflow, project resource management is about ensuring resources are being used efficiently. How long does it take to get a project management certification?Requirements to earn a project management certification are set by the individual certification provider and may include a combination of exams, specific training courses, and minimum education level or experience. The requirements to earn advanced certifications are generally more than those for entry-level credentials. For example, the Project Management Professional is one of the most highly prized certifications available. In addition to passing a rigorous exam, candidates must also possess a combination of education, project management education and experience. CompTIAâs Project+, an entry-level certification, recommends that candidates have 12 monthsâ experience before attempting the exam. However, since this is a recommendation only, candidates can obtain this certification by sitting for the exam regardless, which makes it the only one they found that is available without requiring additional training, education or experience. In the table below, youâll find information on obtaining five popular project management certifications.Â
There are several types of project management certifications. Some are more difficult than others, and each one has its own requirements for candidates. Are IT certifications necessary? You donât necessarily need an IT certification to lead projects in the field. However, obtaining an IT certification can help you gain more knowledge and skills for effectively managing projects and leading your team. Getting an IT certification can also result in a salary increase and make your rĂ©sumĂ© more appealing to employers. If you believe an IT certification could be a good addition to your career, the first step is to choose the area in which you want to receive a certification; project management is hardly the only option. Below are more than a dozen of the best certification areas for IT professionals.
How should I get started with project management training?Start digging into the outlets and offerings that interest you most. When training is free, the only thing you have to lose is your time and energy. Thus, you can try things out and stop at any time if they donât work for you. When it comes to paid training, they recommend looking at online reviews, seeking personal recommendations from people you know and trust, and requesting feedback from former course attendees or materials users to help steer you toward the right choice. Shayna Waltower contributed to the writing and research in this article. Microsoft 365 includes a suite of file creation and digital collaboration tools, and other productivity apps. Sharing settings allow for multiple people to edit and/or view files. These tools can be used individually or collaboratively, and synchronously or asynchronously. The interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary character is the crux of management education. Different tools are needed in different use cases The issues in the growth of management educational institutions are many. To begin with, it is on account of varying understanding about the nature of âmanagementâ, as a discipline. The subject area is itself relatively exact and it found a place in educational institutions between the two world wars. The research traditions are, also, relatively young and area-wise variations in the methods of research are many. Many who have a management degree were at the best taught to be managers and those skills are not always the same as what may be needed for teaching management. There are also variations on account of the nature of the management of educational institutions. Management has been attempted to be taught in general education institutions, agricultural sciences institutions, medical institutions, single discipline institutions and other types of institutions. The antiquity of such institutions, their administrative structure, their market-relatedness, their brand pulls and more are of varying nature. It is generally believed that management education, in its original incarnation, began as âlabor studiesâ. âLeadershipâ was then not a fashionable area of research or teaching. As it so happens often, a 50-year-plus retrospect throws up many contenders for being named as being the first initiative in the domain of management education, in India. Xavier Labour Relations Institute of Jamshedpur was, as claimed by many, one of the first management teaching institutions in India. Ranchi University also claims to be the pioneer in this area. There are other contending institutions, both in the form of colleges and universities, too many and with too little evidence to be listed here. Slowly, however, labour studies grew to a broader and bigger cauldron to include inputs from other well-established disciplines for their focus and decision-making. Illustratively, Psychology was a popular choice as the basis for âunderstanding behaviourâ. Many took it that if they knew Psychology they understood behavior. Attractive as the proposition might be, it was only a part truth. Behavior is influenced by many factors besides psychology. Behavior could be influenced by social factors which could be best understood with the help of Sociology. There were areas in which behaviour could not be understood without the understanding of local history. In other areas of behaviour, insights could be obtained through Political Science or even Geography. The behavioural traits of people from a hilly region would be different from the behavioural traits of people of a river valley culture. Thus, it is that understanding behaviour requires a comprehensive and anthropological insight into areas other than just psychology. The emergence of this kind of approach in response to a felt need saw the emergence of an area called âorganizational behaviorâ within the domain of the management subject area. It was a relatively more exact specialization and required a multi-disciplinary approach. Since there were several so-called subject areas of Psychology, Anthropology, History, and Sociology, and more needed and capable of making their contribution to this new area of âorganizational Berhaviourâ methods of research in the âOrganisational Behaviourâ area took time to crystalize.  Feedback from the field established that understanding âOrganisationsâ required insights into the ability to produce âresultsâ. This itself needed an appreciation of the âstructureâ and âprocessesâ of organisations. Disciplinary gaps and overlaps could not be allowed to blur the clarity into appreciating which actions would need to take place in organisations for effectiveness. The effectiveness of learning in educational institutions would be measured by its applicability in the world of work. Gradually disciplinary conflicts reduced its interface for the requirement of understanding behavior in organisations. Several focused studies revealed that where behavior would be similar in many ways in an organization it would have variations say from one management domain to another. A âfinance manâ would need a particular type of orientation as a man in the marketing area or operations research domain would need different kinds of tools. As the number of learning institutions grew and found an orientation of their own it became obvious that each âdivisionâ of the learning organization would need an approach with a multi-disciplinary perspective. The need for an âarea approachâ was widely recognized. Thus in educational institutions âManagement Facultyâ acquired a character of its own. The use of the word âdepartmentâ was considerably reduced and instead the word âareaâ became more common. Thus, it is that management institutions grew up to have an organizational behaviour area rather than an organizational behaviour department. This approach affected almost every contributing input to management learning and decision-making. Illustratively in management institutions, say, the âfinance areaâ emerged which subsumed under it everything from accounting to auditing. Similar observations could be made about the operations research area, marketing area, or, for that matter, anything that became an input to managerial skill formulation. To sum up, therefore, the important thing is to recognize the interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary character of management education. This is the foundation of any management institution that seeks to create an ambience of learning for management learning. (The writer is an internationally acclaimed management consultant. Kristen Garner at Kramer describes how technology can revolutionise the future classroom Just like the world of work, education has recently transformed from a strictly on-site activity to an entirely blended, hybrid experience. Today, students need to be able to connect to their lessons both in the classroom and remotely, during and after class.  This rapid evolution means some institutions are still a little behind when it comes to equipping their learning spaces with the tools and technologies that modern students now demand. How can educators keep up with todayâs cutting-edge trends and expectations, while still creating spaces that offer outstanding learning experiences now and long into the future? The first major step is to explore whatâs currently trending in higher education. Seamless accessibility and connectivity Higher educationâs focus must currently be on accessibility. Campuses need to have an agile and accommodating approach to the student population, as the ability to stream, broadcast, and capture teaching sessions is critical for student success and different learning styles. Studentsâ ability to connect in the classroom or remotely during or after a class is also vital to their success. Flexibility, autonomy of use (any platform should be accessible), the experience of the user, student device use and connectivity to an installed solution should all be priorities as education grows increasingly hybrid. AR and VR shaping the future of learning Remote lessons enabled by cameras and microphones were the biggest change to education in exact years. Moving forward, augmented reality (AR) can be expected to become the next big shift, and these types of technological advances are already seeping into the campus landscapes. While class spaces may not be equipping them as quickly as students are bringing the need to the campus, it is an inevitable move. Soon, these technologies will form an expected part of the learning experience. Many educators are already using the artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and metaverse collective in their teaching modalities where it fits the curriculum or teaching style. The ability to meet students where they arrive is the natural evolution. It is the students who will drive the speed of adoption. They are already using it in some platforms to create different views for the users. This will continue to develop to provide an experience that is more conducive to each individual learner.  AR doesnât offer a âone-size-fits-allâ experience; however, the technology needs to appear that way for ease of use and the capability to easily transmit curriculum. As students grow accustomed to creating their own virtual environments and interfaces outside of the classroom, the ability and flexibility to create an experience tailored to everyone will become the expectation. Automating different learning processes Some students might hope that theyâll no longer need to memorise or work on math equations, for instance, is tools like AI are available. For those students, I have some bad news! Understanding concepts, such as mental arithmetic, will still be necessaryâbut fortunately, the process may not be as mentally taxing as math becomes more and more automated.  Just as in the past software took the place of accounting, order processing, and architectural planning, tools for creating and processing will become more intelligent in this way. Goals and creativity will still begin at the human level, but new technologies may provide a different way and timeline to achieve the desired result.   Designing tomorrowâs smart spaces, today To future-proof learning spaces, Iâd prioritise the creation of highly flexible areas that provide for everything from rudimentary to extraordinary use cases. In other words, traditional lecture-style rooms that can seamlessly transition into more sophisticated spaces.  The roomsâ enhanced systems should offer augmented video, enriched audio, and comfortable seating/furniture options that provide inclusive event and immersive sessions for the learner to experience sense-based learning options. Gaming and e-sports already provide these types of experiences with curved monitors, headphones and mics, and furniture that cocoons the person, making them one with the session. These environments will become more prevalent in classrooms to facilitate more immersive education. Keeping tech simple and functional However, the installation of all this advanced technology is meaningless if itâs then too complicated for everyday teachers to use. Systems still need to remain simple, functional, and appropriate for the type of class experience. As faculty members rely heavily on the technological components of a classroom to share curriculum, it needs to remain basic to facilitate to subject matter, rather than become the focus/issue of a session. Training faculty to use the systems, standardising the user experience, and offering tools for help/assistance are all great starting points for a better experience for both teachers and students, and will ensure less disruption to teaching time. Plus, when a teacher knows what to expect and is comfortable and familiar with the system, they will use it more regularly and take advantage of its features. When support and helpdesk create efficient processes and procedures, there is less downtime in classrooms and more faculty satisfaction. Setting up maintenance practices, hiring knowledgeable tech staff, and offering reliable solutions can make the difference. The reality is that solid campus technology, less down-time, and well-placed solutions, features, and functionality all help to facilitate greater student enrolment and retention. Modern higher education has moved towards visual aids, interoperability and interactivity. And with the seamless technology now readily available to enable this, higher education institutions must begin leveraging it to break down barriers to progress the industry alongside students and lecturers. Kristen Garner is Director of Business Development for Education in North America at Kramer Main image courtesy of iStockPhoto.com Artificial Intelligence Microsoft Announces General Availability of Copilot, Expands Data Protection to Education UsersMicrosoft announced recently that its pilot AI program, Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise, launched in February 2023, is no longer in beta and has been renamed as Microsoft Copilot. It is now available for general use. Copilot uses the GPT-4 AI large language model (LLM) that helps users with tasks such as "drafting an e-mail, summarizing PDFs and articles, generating images with DALL-E 3, learning new skills, and getting answers to complex questions," Microsoft said. Beginning in early 2024, Microsoft Copilot will be available to all faculty and higher education students ages 18 and above, the company said. These users will receive commercial-level data protection at no extra cost, backed by Microsoft's Universal Commercial License Terms for Online Services and subject to its Customer Copyright Commitment. That protection means:
Account holders can currently sign in to Copilot here. An updated and renamed user interface is planned for rollout to customers over time, the company said. In addition, Microsoft has expanded Copilot for Microsoft 365 eligibility to include education users. Starting Jan. 1, 2024, enterprise pricing will be available at $30 per user per month for all faculty and staff. While those with Copilot already enabled need do nothing, those who are new to it or need help transitioning from the Bing Chat interface can obtain an adoption kit containing training materials and ready-to-use e-mail templates. For more information, see this blog post on the changes as well as details on the expansion to education here. A video explaining more about Copilot is available here.
