Future of ICT talent discussed at Huawei competition in Bahrain On the sidelines of the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-24 regional final awards ceremony, the University of Bahrain hosted an exclusive forum on ICT talent cultivation featuring senior speakers from industry organisations and renowned regional universities.
The University of Bahrain, a partner for the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-24 regional final, hosted the official closing and awards ceremony for the programme this year. The forum panel discussion featured Dr Jassim Haji, president of the International Group of Artificial Intelligence; Dr Hessa Jassim al-Junaid, dean of the College of Information Technology, University of Bahrain; Dr Tilda Karkour Akiki, associate dean of the School of Engineering, Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Lebanon; and Amr Hashem, policy director at GSMA MENA.
The discussion was moderated by Ammar Tobba, vice president of Public Affairs and Communications, Huawei Middle East and Central Asia Region.
The speakers discussed challenges and future opportunities in building the ICT talent ecosystem and the value of Public-Private partnerships in nurturing ICT talent innovations, supporting the university curriculum with practical skills and training, and driving the socio-economic growth of countries in the region.
Dr al-Junaid said annually, the Huawei ICT Talent competition attracts a growing number of registered students, indicating its increasing popularity.
"The College of IT students who participated in the Huawei ICT Talent competition have demonstrated high employability due to the provision of relevant skills, industry knowledge, problem-solving abilities, teamwork experience, and industry recognition. Additionally, the competition encourages students to pursue Huawei professional certifications that hold international recognition.”
Dr Haji explained how technology will impact undergraduate engineers. “AI tools are poised to transform the way talented students learn and create, offering a wealth of benefits such as guidelines to the job market, the course selection, and curriculum advisory. Furthermore, generative AI creates tests tailored to each student's learning preferences, interactive activities, or even life-like simulations.”
Dr Akiki shared her thoughts on how ICT students can contribute to today’s industrial digital transformation and the urgent need to narrow the ICT talent gap, especially to encourage more participation from women.
Hashem shared his remarks on cultivating young talent for the telecommunications industry, especially in light of the accelerated deployment of 5G. Tobba stressed that ICT talent development programmes like the Huawei ICT Competition contribute towards bridging the digital divide and narrowing the digital skills gap, nurturing young industry talents and strengthening the ICT talent ecosystem across the region."
Since its launch in 2017, Huawei's ICT Competition has become the largest and most influential initiative in the region. The competition has received support and endorsements from Unesco and more than 20 regional ministries, operators and industry partners.
This year, more than 27,500 students from over 600 universities across 21 Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries participated in the Middle East & Central Asia Huawei ICT Competition – marking the highest level of participation in the seven-year competition's history.
A total of 22 teams consisting of 66 national winners from 11 Middle Eastern & Central Asian countries, including Bahrain, Pakistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Oman, participated in the regional finals held in Bahrain from December 19-21.

Huawei: Which countries are blocking its 5G technology?

By Reality Check teamBBC News

The US decision to ban its companies from using foreign telecoms providers regarded as a security risk is the latest salvo apparently directed against Chinese tech giant Huawei.

The US has been at the forefront of an effort to restrict the use of Huawei equipment in 5G mobile networks, citing serious security issues.

Huawei is now facing resistance from other governments over the risk that its technology could be used for espionage.

So which other countries are blocking Huawei's 5G technology, and which are allowing it to operate?

This is new technology, in its very early stages of implementation, and many countries are still deciding what role - if any - Huawei should play.

But Huawei says it has now signed more than 40 commercial 5G contracts around the world, including in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The Five Eyes

Australia effectively banned Huawei and another Chinese telecom firm, ZTE, last year when it applied national security rules to companies supplying equipment to telecoms firms.

New Zealand has blocked Huawei from supplying one mobile network with 5G equipment, but has not yet ruled out all Huawei 5G contracts completely.

These two countries, along with the UK and Canada, make up the so-called Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network with the US.

The UK is still reviewing its 5G telecoms policy and may allow Huawei to supply "non-core" 5G components, such as antenna masts.

Canada is still weighing up its decision over Huawei.

The United States has effectively blocked all Huawei involvement in its 5G networks.

No Europe-wide decision yet

So far, no European country has formally blocked Huawei, and the majority of the company's current global 5G contracts are with companies operating within Europe.

The EU in March issued recommendations about 5G security, asking member states to review their networks by the end of June and report their findings to the EU Commission.

Despite pressure from the United States, Germany has resisted a ban, and France has not indicated it plans to follow a tough line against the Chinese company.

The Netherlands' largest telecom firm, KPN, has already made clear that it would not allow Huawei to build its "core" 5G infrastructure, but it could supply other equipment considered less sensitive.

The Dutch government is expected to make a decision on using Huawei equipment by the end of June.

A telecoms firm in Russia signed a deal with Huawei on 5G technology during a visit to the country in June by the Chinese president.

Inroads into Asia

South Korea launched commercial 5G services last month, and one of its three carriers has used 5G equipment supplied by Huawei.

5G trials are due to be carried out in India later this year with Huawei one of the companies invited to take part.

However, there are reports that India may limit Huawei's involvement in developing its 5G infrastructure.

Malaysia has already made clear that Huawei can be involved in developing its 5G networks, with the prime minister visiting the company's office in Beijing in April.

South Korea now has a nationwide 5G network

In Indonesia, the country's telecoms minister said earlier this year that it could not afford to be "paranoid" over using Huawei technology.

In Thailand, Huawei has already launched a 5G test project.

Vietnam, which is developing a 5G network, has not officially banned Huawei, although one of the largest largest telecoms carriers is currently using Ericsson technology.

Japan has blocked the use of Huawei equipment for 5G over security fears, although as in other countries, Huawei kit is part of the existing 4G network.

The growth of 5G is likely to lead to other opportunities for Huawei around the world.

The company says it already has 10 confirmed 5G contracts in the Middle East.

The African continent has not been in the forefront of early 5G adoption, but its more advanced economies provide potentially fertile markets.

In South Africa, for example, Huawei has already announced its involvement in a commercial 5G network in Johannesburg with the mobile data provider, Rain.

According to one industry-wide body, there were more than 200 operators in 85 countries investing in 5G networks in some form or another by March this year.

Experiential Learning & Professional Success

Scholarly experiential activities allow students and faculty members to integrate and reinforce chemistry knowledge, develop their scientific and professional skills, enhance their safety and risk assessment skills, create new scientific knowledge, and add new contributions to other knowledge bases. Although implementing and sustaining such projects is a resource-intensive process, including but not limited to: faculty time, laboratory space, instrumentation, chemical literature, supplies, and student stipends, the investment is justified by its positive impact on student learning and the richness it adds to students’ and faculty members’ scientific experiences. Increased student-faculty member engagement has also been shown to increase student success.

Huawei MateBook D 16 2024: Your lightweight powerhouse for work, play and learning

The Huawei MateBook D 16 is a high-performing laptop built for purposeful lifestyles.

Huawei has announced the release of the new Huawei MateBook D 16 2024. The laptop retains its 16-inch large screen real estate, is now lighter and yet still just as powerful, adding a boost of power to its 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900H Processor with the Dual Shark Fin Fan technology and up to 70 Wh of battery life. Built for the evolving demands faced by young office workers and students, the new Huawei MateBook D 16 2024 is the ideal compact and portable companion that doesn’t compromise on performance.

Be your best: Widen your horizons, execute your potential

Every young, passionate individual who wants to fulfil goals at work, school, or even play have one thing in common – the need for a computer to help uncover their potential and empower them to do more. However, the search for the ideal laptop is often coupled with trade-offs. Users who want a high-performance laptop often find themselves with a bulky and heavy laptop. Others who desire a lightweight laptop often have to make compromises on the size of their screens.

With the introduction of its newly upgraded Huawei MateBook D 16, Huawei is tackling these pain points, delivering a large-screen, high-performing laptop built for purposeful lifestyles, giving users the productivity boost they need. In addition, it also boasts an immersive big screen and a lightweight body.

16-inch FullView Display: The productivity powerhouse

Designed for maximum comfort and optimised experience, the Huawei MateBook D 16 is sleek and elegant and is available in a futuristic Mystic Silver colour. Now lighter at 1.68kg and thinner at 17mm, the Huawei MateBook D 16 offers the biggest screen among Huawei’s laptop series – staying true to the immersive large-screen experience. Thin bezels ensure an expansive view with a screen-to-body ratio up to 90%, giving creators a larger canvas to work off and multitasking office workers an enlarged workspace.

The Huawei MateBook D 16 also has a new 180° hinge. This gives the laptop flexibility to unfold fully and flatly onto the table, perfect for collaborative sessions at work or school. For those who have a multi-device workspace, the laptop can also be unfolded on a stand for greater space efficiency.

Outstanding performance featuring upgraded 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900H Processor

The Huawei MateBook D 16 delivers breakthrough performance levels with the 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900H Processor, allowing users to easily handle heavy multitasking asks such as programming, illustrating, and video editing. The 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900H Processor can get a further boost with Performance Mode and Super Turbo, which can be activated when additional performance is required for high-demand tasks.

Additionally, the Huawei MateBook D16 includes a Dual Shark Fin Fan technology to optimise performance efficiency. The twin-blade cooling technology regulates heat dissipation around the laptop, improving efficiency and preventing system crashes especially when you’re working on a large-sized file.

Productivity often depends on the battery performance. The Huawei MateBook D 16 takes efficiency a step forward with up to 70 Wh of battery life – an upgrade from its previous edition’s 56 Wh maximum battery capacity. With an upgraded battery capacity, users working on the go don’t have to break a sweat about a depleting battery.

The Huawei MateBook D 16 also comes with a 1.5mm key travel and soft-landing keyboard design. The new individual numeric keypad enables users to work with charts, data, and documents more efficiently, while the physical shortcut keys allow direct access to frequently used functions for better productivity.

World’s first laptop to attain the 5-star Wi-Fi signal capability certification

The Huawei MateBook D 16 has strong antenna performance, improving all-round wireless performance and adding network experience improvements. It is also the world’s first notebook to pass the SGS 5-Star Wi-Fi Signal Capability Certification, passing numerous speed and uplink/downlink rate tests with excellent results, delivering an improved online experience.

The laptop also adds the Huawei Metaline Antenna, boosting connectivity strength. Huawei Metaline can establish ultra-long-distance connections of up to 270 metres, which greatly reduces false signal pick-ups and creates more stable connections. Users can say goodbye to slow-loading video streams and choppy conference calls!

Smart experience: Seamless and intelligent task-handling

A standard in accurate Huawei products, the Super Device feature provides a quick, hassle-free way to pair your laptop with other devices. Users can simply initiate a connection by dragging and dropping icons. With Super Device, you can turn your Huawei smartphone into an external storage system, your Huawei tablet into an extra monitor space, and expand your sound experience by linking your PC to a Huawei speaker or Huawei earphones.

Remote workers can enjoy intelligent video conference tools, such as AI background, FollowCam and Sight Correction. Users can build a meeting space with features such as AI Sound and AI Camera which add privacy protection features and noise cancellation to deliver a superior video conferencing environment, making online meetings flow smoothly without distractions.

To keep meetings distraction-free and create a private environment, the AI-powered Personal Voice Enhancement feature helps you focus on the speaker to enhance their voice during a call, and keeps noisy ambient sounds low.

The new Huawei MateBook D 16’s large screen, lightweight portability, powerful performance, seamless Super Device connectivity and smart conference features make this laptop an ideal productivity device for the Smart Office era.

Huawei MateBook D 16 will be available at retailers including Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C, Incredible Connection, HUAWEI Experience Stores and on the HUAWEI Online Store from 15 January 2024.
