Dell will also target 100 percent Unix shops for the first time with this array, Brisse said. "Dell has a commodity-based sales model," he said. "We can bring a value to those customers, where before they could only use proprietary or monolithic products. . . . Traditionally, Dell has a maniacal focus on costs. Now they can bring this to the Unix market." While Dell currently offers NT and Linux servers, it does have the storage management software capabilities to leverage in mixed Unix/NT environments for a seamless user model, Brisse said. Eighty percent of Dell's systems consultants are now Unix-certified, thanks to training and other support from partners such as EMC, Brisse said. Consulting, planning, design and implementation services for the Clariion will be done by Dell-badged employees or, if customers prefer, personnel from third parties such as EMC, said Brisse. Dell employees are currently going through thousands of training sessions each day, including mandatory Unix training, leveraging EMC procedures, he said. Further cementing the Dell bond with EMC is the first public acknowledgement of a manufacturing arrangement between the two. EMC executives this week said an entry-level version of the CX600 is planned to be introduced six to eight months later. The entry-level model will be manufactured by both EMC and Dell, but EMC's solution providers will be tapped to resell the EMC version. Solution providers are concerned about Dell's low-cost push into the enterprise and how that will affect their EMC business. The problem is not just that Dell comes in with lower numbers, said Hope Hayes, president of Alliance Technology Group, a Hanover, Md.-based EMC partner. It is more a case of how the vendor combines products and moves margins between various products to compete in the storage space. "We see customers say they want to buy Dell servers or other products," Hayes said. "They say they also want disks. They can bring in the disks. But if Dell hears of the deal, they will come in and move things around to make the numbers. You can never beat Dell on price." One solution provider who requested anonymity said the Dell model is driving prices down and putting pressure on margins. "We focus on value, so Dell's model is contrary to ours. Yes, you can argue that you can make it up on value services. But they like to get margin on the hardware, too. When [Dell's in the picture, it becomes more of a price-driven scenario than a value-driven scenario. The lower end you get, the more formidable the competition with Dell. At the lower end, deals are more margin-driven anyway, the solution provider said. "The trick to competing with Dell is know when to walk," he said. "If the price is the sole determining factor, it's hard to compete." Short-term spiffs and special pricing to Dell from EMC shows that EMC's direct guys don't understand marketing, said another solution provider. "Sales people are coin-operated," the solution provider said. "But what about us? They are always trying to win the direct guys' hearts. They bring them into accounts. But they can make more money with Dell. Sure, EMC is saying it's moving into the channel. But the biggest beneficiary to that is their Dell relationship." Not all solution providers agree that EMC's relationship with Dell hurts the channel. James Kernan, president and CEO of Networks Plus Technology Group, a San Diego-based solution provider, said his company resells Dell products, including the EMC-made Clariion storage arrays, and even does subcontracting for Dell on services such as on-site consulting, design, installation and support. "This happens especially if they are in the account and create the opportunity for Dell," he said. It helps Networks Plus that not many people resell Dell, said Kernan. "We actually make more margin on Dell than with many so-called channel-friendly vendors," he said. "If you sell Dell as a solution instead of as a single box, it works." From AMD EPYC processors to Nvidia A100 GPUs, here are five features inside Dell EMCâs new PowerEdge XE8545 server that you need to know about. Dell EMC Launches PowerEdge XE8545Dell EMC took the wraps off its new PowerEdge XE8545 server today, that uniquely combines AMD and Nvidia technology with the companyâs high-end server line. âThe Dell EMC PowerEdge XE8545 is a brand-new and incredibly powerful server that simplifies artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in your data center,â said Ravi Pendekanti, senior vice president of server solutions product management and marketing at Dell EMC in a blog post today. âThese servers donât just power your data center, theyâre designed to help you innovate, adapt and grow well into the future.â The PowerEdge XE8545 is designed for accelerated workloads and ideal for machine learning, HPC and GPU virtualization. Here are the five key features in Dell EMCâs new PowerEdge server that you need to know about. AMD And NvidiaThe new PowerEdge XE8545 server combines the maximum core counts of two 3rd generation AMD EPYC processors with four of the highest performing NVIDIA A100 GPUs. PowerEdge XE8545 offers up to 128 cores of Milan CPUs, four Nvidia A100 GPUs, and optimized performance of Nvidiaâs vGPU software in a dual socket, 4U rack server. âIt is designed specifically for accelerated workloads, which make it ideal for cutting-edge machine learning models, complex high-performance computing and GPU virtualization,â said Dell EMCâs Pendekanti. Dell EMC said other key capabilities of the PowerEdge XE8545 includes optimized CPU to GPU performance and accelerated I/O throughput. NVMe And PCIe Gen 4Dell EMC says itâs increased the speed of storage with NVMe and reduced data latency with PCIe to accelerate I/O throughput, which prevents performance bottlenecks when organizations are executing on large data sets. Dell was able to do this by adopting PCIe Gen4 NVMe. âThese components help you take full advantage of the serverâs compute power by keeping the data close to the processing,â said Dell EMCâs Pendekanti. Dellâs PowerEdge XE server line is purpose-built for complex, emerging workloads that require high performance and large storage which is why NVMe is critical. The server delivers the reliability and security for demanding applications inside traditional data centers or in extreme conditions stretching from outside the data center to the harsh edge environment of the IT infrastructure. Nvidia NVLink IncludedThe PowerEdge XE8545 is one of the first servers on the market to have the new Nvidia NVLink baseboard with Nvidiaâs A100 chips in it. Nvidia NVLink is a high-speed, direct GPU-to-GPU interconnect that offers a significantly faster alternative for multi-GPU systems compared to traditional PCIe-based solutions, according to Nvidia. âFor example, you can boost A100 machine learning inferencing with 1.46X more images per second per GPU within the PowerEdge XE8545.1,â said Dell EMCâs Pendekanti. Air CooledThe PowerEdge XE8545 is completely air cooled for greater efficiency and lower cost of operation, Dell said. Being air cooled avoids the need of incorporating extra piping to accommodate for liquid cooling. âWhile AI infrastructure is loaded with performance features, it also has a reputation for being difficult to deploy and manage. Weâve remedied these concerns with a server design and management features that radically simplify your experience,â Dell EMCâs Pendekanti said. âYou can analyze more than 150k images per second, leveraging 2x AMD Milan CPU and 4x NVIDIA A100 SXM4 500W GPU, all with standard air cooling in the PowerEdge XE854.â Additionally, the new PowerEdge XE8545 is a 4U standard-depth rack server, meaning it easily fits into existing data centers. Includes iDRAC and OpenManage EnterpriseThe PowerEdge XE8545 server includes iDRAC [Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller] compliance, designed for secure local and remote server management that helps IT administrators deploy, update and monitor PowerEdge serves anywhere. The server also includes Dell EMCâs OpenManage Enterprise support that enables customers to easily monitor and maintain data centers with OpenManage integrations. OpenManage Enterprise is a systems management console that facilitates lifecycle management for Dell EMC PowerEdge servers in one console. âRegardless of whether youâre doing training or inferencing, solving tough problems involving fluid dynamics or genomics, analyzing data or virtualizing GPU operations, itâs time to unleash the uncompromised power of the PowerEdge XE8545,â said Dell EMCâs Pendekanti. âCatalyze the development and implementation of machine learning algorithms, quickly perform advanced computations and analyze data with amazing speed. ⊠The PowerEdge XE8545 server [is] your innovation engine.â Nutrition is a key part of overall health, and knowing basic information helps people make informed choices about what and how they eat. Understanding the benefits of different foods, as well as which foods to limit for overall health, creates a strong foundation for healthy eating throughout life. By Jan Pantzar (VSORA) and Lauro Rizzatti The automotive industry is delivering the first implementations of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) for Level 2 (foot off the gas or break) and Level 3 (hands off the wheel) vehicles. Though itâs struggling to develop an autonomous driving (AD) system from L4 (eyes off the road) to L5 (completely self-driving and autonomous) vehicles. The challenge is turning out to be more difficult than anticipated a few years ago. Implementing an AD system comes down to safely moving a vehicle from point A to point B without human assistance. This can be accomplished by a three-stage state machine called driving control loop that includes perception, motion planning, and motion execution. Perception learns and understands the driving environment, as well as the vehicle position or its localization on a map. The perception stage feeds environment and localization data to the motion or path planning that calculates the trajectory of the vehicle, in turn performed by the motion execution. If perception generates inaccurate data, the trajectory is going to be flawed. In the worst-case, it leads to catastrophic results. A successful AD system implementation rests on a state-machine architecture that can formulate a truthful understanding of the environment, produce an efficient motion plan, and flawlessly perform its execution. © 2023 Fortune Media IP Limited.
