Question: 95 HOTSPOT You need to design a data ingestion and storage solution for the Twitter feeds. The solution must meet the customer sentiment analytics requirements. What should you include in the solution? To answer, select the appropriate options in the answer area. NOTE: Each correct selection b worth one point. Answer: Explanation: Graphical user interface, text Description automatically generated Box 1: Configure Evegent Hubs partitions Scenario: Maximize the throughput of ingesting Twitter feeds from Event Hubs to Azure Storage without purchasing additional throughput or capacity units. Event Hubs is designed to help with processing of large volumes of events. Event Hubs throughput is scaled by using partitions and throughput-unit allocations. Event Hubs traffic is controlled by TUs (standard tier). Auto-inflate enables you to start small with the minimum required TUs you choose. The feature then scales automatically to the maximum limit of TUs you need, depending on the increase in your traffic. Box 2: An Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 account Scenario: Ensure that the data store supports Azure AD-based access control down to the object level. Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 implements an access control model that supports both Azure role-based access control (Azure RBAC) and POSIX-like access control lists (ACLs). Question: 96 You have an Azure Stream Analytics query. The query returns a result set that contains 10,000 distinct values for a column named clusterID. You monitor the Stream Analytics job and discover high latency. You need to reduce the latency. Which two actions should you perform? Each correct answer presents a complete solution. NOTE: Each correct selection is worth one point. A. Add a pass-through query. B. Add a temporal analytic function. C. Scale out the query by using PARTITION BY. D. Convert the query to a reference query. E. Increase the number of streaming units. Answer: C,E Explanation: C: Scaling a Stream Analytics job takes advantage of partitions in the input or output. Partitioning lets you divide data into subsets based on a partition key. A process that consumes the data (such as a Streaming Analytics job) can consume and write different partitions in parallel, which increases throughput. E: Streaming Units (SUs) represents the computing resources that are allocated to execute a Stream Analytics job. The higher the number of SUs, the more CPU and memory resources are allocated for your job. This capacity lets you focus on the query logic and abstracts the need to manage the hardware to run your Stream Analytics job in a timely manner. Microsoftâs Copilot might not be breaking ground in quite the same way as ChatGPT seemed to when it first debuted, but there are still some useful abilities for this desktop-ready chatbot AI that is now available to pretty much anyone running the latest version of Windows 11. It doesnât have a huge range of abilities yet, confining itself to changing some Windows settings, opening apps for you, and performing the creative writing and web search functions available through its contemporaries. But you can make Copilot work for you and work well, and there are some tips and tricks youâll want to employ to make the most of it. Here are some of my favorites. Go hands-freeWhile the latest natural language AIs might be primarily text-based, many of them now include voice and audio support, and Windows Copilot is much the same. While this might seem like merely a more clunky way to interact with Copilot â and it is kind of clunky â this is an important feature because it means you donât have to use your hands to prompt it. Beyond clicking the little microphone button, you can get back to whatever youâre doing while asking it a question or requesting something from it. For me, this means I can ask it to find me information on a subject for an article Iâm writing, summarize a webpage, or give me some tips on how to do something, all while working on something else. This is particularly useful when youâre writing an article about Copilot tips and tricks, as you can have them play out while youâre writing it. When Iâm writing a best-of list, though, I can have it grab a spec sheet for me, which saves me around a minute of time for each request. Those minutes quickly add up. Beyond my needs, though, voice support is also an important accessibility feature. You donât even need to be able to type to enjoy Windows Copilot. Young children or those with mobility difficulties can interact with and receive useful responses from it just like everyone else. For those who struggle to use a mouse or keyboard, this could greatly Improve their ability to interact with Windows naturally. When I had a pinched nerve in my back recently and found using a mouse painful, Copilot was able to reduce my reliance on it. Itâs not perfect, or even great, yet, but it has the potential to be huge. Youâll need to be signed in to use all its featuresWindows Copilot has a few additional functions that require additional information from you. In the case of generating images, youâll need to be signed in to the Windows Image Creator service. This is also a good help tip if you find that you canât use Copilot because its icon is missing or it just wonât open. Make sure youâre signed in to your online Microsoft account. Integrate Edge with Windows CopilotOne of the few features that Copilot currently has that works really well is interacting with Edge. As a Microsoft product, this is perhaps no surprise, but it expands the functionality of Copilot beyond the bounds of Windows itself and, crucially, allows it to interact with your web session in a range of ways. I often pull up articles with every intention of memorizing them, only to find out that it will take me 20 minutes, and who has time for that? Iâd certainly like to, but at this time in my life, I donât, so Copilot can quickly summarize it for you. It can find specific information within the page, too, which can be great for finding a quote or reference you need from a lengthy interview or video transcript. It works with PDFsOne of my favorite ways to use AI chatbots so far is searching through lengthy PDF documents for board game rule references. Iâve tried a few different options, but Windows Copilot does a pretty good job. In this case, I asked about a rule for the complicated board game Twilight Imperium. To do so, I uploaded the living rules to a cloud service, opened the file in Edge, and had it share my on-screen content with Copilot. It found the right rule reference and added additional (largely unnecessary) clarification. Itâs not perfect, but with a less nuanced or complicated request, it could be more effective. It works in a range of other apps tooDonât forget that Windows Copilot might be mainly designed around a general chat tool but is slowly being integrated into Microsoftâs other apps. If you use Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, or other Microsoft applications, it might be worth paying the additional subscription fee of $30 per user per month to get Copilot into your 365 applications. Youâll be able to do things like make an entire PowerPoint presentation just from a quick prompt or get AI-generated text right in Word. Be precise and be prepared for errorsAs great as Windows Copilot can be, it is still very clearly a work in progress. Some of the features arenât available yet, some of the features arenât available to everyone, and even the ones you do have access to wonât necessarily work. In one test, Copilot told me it couldnât generate images because I wasnât signed in, and then it claimed it couldnât generate images at all. One day, it allowed me to open applications using it â admittedly, using the laborious process of clicking on the button within its chat to do so â and another day, it wouldnât let me, suggesting it doesnât have that functionality and can only search the web for answers to my problem. Some days, it wonât even turn on dark mode, as it did in its very first demonstrations. Be very clear in your instructions to avoid potential errors, but be prepared for it not to work as intended all of the time. If you encounter an error, try restarting Copilot or rebooting your PC. Editors' RecommendationsA lot of teams work from home, and they must have a tool that helps them communicate, manage tasks, get on video calls, and so on. Microsoft Teams is a viable solution that anyone can use; it is available without any extra cost. In this post, I am sharing 10 Microsoft Teams tips and tricks that will help you Improve your experience with the product. It also offers extra features such as translation, line focus, change text size, bookmarks, and more. 8] Microsoft Planner integration for task managementIf you have access to the Microsoft planner under Microsoft 365 subscription, then it is going to be the most straightforward task manager for you. It is recommended for those who do not use any third-party task manager and need one for the Team. Once integrated, you can create a task out of any message and assign it to any person. You can also âpinâ the Planner app to any channel to make it more accessible in one click. 9] Background BlurIf you have used Skype meetings, I am sure you already know about this feature. It allows you to hide what is in your background to keep your privacy. Microsoft teams offer video calling, and it uses Skype, which means you can use the same set of features. If you want to activate Background Blur during meetings, click on the more actions on the call menu and select âBlur My Background.â TIP: You can also use Custom Backgrounds in Microsoft Teams. 10] Email into TeamsWhile Teams-Outlook integration is yet to happen, until then if you want to forward any email into your Team, you can enable the built-in feature, click on the Teams menu, and then select Get email address. It will then reveal a unique email id to which you can forward an email to appear on the teams. The configuration allows you to let anyone send emails, or only members of Team or only from the fixed set of domains. That said, there can be a lot of tips tricks available for Microsoft teams. These are some of the best and will make sure you get to learn something new and help you use Microsoft Teams even better. What are the best messaging apps for Windows PC?While there are many, for general consumers, the best apps are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Slack, Telegram, and Discord. Now that WhatsApp works well on PC as well, you can use it without the phone on up to four devices. Does Windows have integrated instant messaging? No, but Windows 11 offers Team Chat as part of the OS that you can use to organize meetings and chat with friends and family. You can also quickly launch it using Win + C keyboard shortcut. This one may seem like a no-brainer, but which font you use in Microsoft Word can make all the difference. In most scenarios, you want to use a professional font style and a standard font size for all your documents. Something easy to read. The last thing you want is an entire document written in Comic Sans or another font that screams unprofessionalism. The standard is either an 11 or 12-point font, ensuring you have enough room to write while maintaining an easy-to-read professional style. As for the font style, Times New Roman is, without a doubt, the go-to font for any printed document, while Arial is the number one option for digital writing. If, for some reason, neither is available, Georgia and Calibri are great substitutes, respectively. Follow these steps to change your font in Microsoft Word:
You can change the font style, size, and color, but it's best to leave it black, as something extravagant could be hard to read. If you want to use multiple fonts, highlight a section of text and select a new font. This will change the selected text while leaving the rest of the document in the default style. Microsoft has been relaunching its browser, which first started with the EDGE HTML rendering engine and now Chromium. While Internet Explorer is still there on Windows 10, Edge HTML will be called Edge Legacy, the new Chromium-based Edge Browser will soon be delivered through Windows Update. This post offers you some cool Edge Browser Chromium Tips and Tricks that will help you get the best of this new web browser and its features in Windows 11 and Windows 10. Here are some tips and tricks that will help you get the best out of the new Microsoft Edge Chromium browser on Windows 11/10:
You can quickly access the Edge Chromium Settings either by using âedge://settings/â in the URL or click on the three dots and then click on settings. I have also highlighted the direct path for each of the settings for quicker access. 1] Enable Dark ModeThe default is set to the light theme, but you can change it to Dark or use System mode. The latter will automatically enable dark mode when you use Dark Mode in Windows 10.
Read: How to enable or disable Audio, Video, and Screen Capture in Edge. 2] Force Dark Mode for Web ContentsIf you want to force websites to become dark, you can force it using a flagâForce Dark Mode for Web Contents. It works on Chrome as well because of the Chromium Engine.
You should know that when you force a website to change, it is possible that some of the text will not be visible to you. Chromium Engine offers different ways to force dark mode. Experiment with them to find what works for you. There are various ways like HSL, RGB, and so on. Read:Â How to lock the Edge or Chrome browser with a password. 3] Change default searchThe default search engine in Edge Chromium is going to be Bing, but you can always change it. You can choose to create custom search engines to search on websites directly.
Now every time you type on the address bar, it will search on Google. If there is another search engine you want to add, click on Manage Search Engines, and you can add based on some parameters. You can include Google or any other search engine in the list of Edge browser. Our post on how to change Default Search to Google in Edge offers step-by-step instructions in this regard. Read: How to find those parameters and add them. 4] Customize New Tab or Home PageEvery time you open Edge Chromium, you should see a new wallpaper as a background. Itâs a signature feature of Edge that has been there for long. You get a search bar, background image, and a bunch of recently visited pages in the form of aligned boxes. The New tab page in the Edge browser now features  4 new modes. This helps you customize the experience to fit your preferences. See âChange New Tab Page layout in Edgeâ to know the complete procedure. You can change this layout by clicking on the cog icon on the right. Apart from this, you also have On Startup option (edge://settings/onStartup), where you can choose open a new tab or Continue where you left off and open a specific page every time. Read: How to block a website in Microsoft Edge. 5] Customize Edge BrowserEdge offers some customization options. Visit this page if you would like to customize the Edge browser. 6] Set Multiple HomepagesA home page is the main page of a website where visitors can find hyperlinks to other pages on the site. Also, it is a web address that opens automatically when you launch the web browser. Here, you can set your favorite website, blog or search engine as your home page or you can set a blank page too. Like all web browsers, the new Edge too, lets you configure multiple homepages. Just access âSettings and moreâ menu > âSettingsâ > âOn startupâ > âOpen a specific page or pagesâ > âAdd a new pageâ. Then, enter the URL of the homepage and you are good to go! TIP: You can edit an Image using built-in Image Editor Tool of Microsoft Edge 7] Manage Passwords and AutoFillJust like Chrome and Firefox, Microsoft Edge Chromium offers its inbuilt password manager that can sync across devices. Edge is also available on Android and iPhone.
When you turn off sign-in, you will have to enter the password every time you use the password manager to sign in. You can do away with the requirement of saving passwords manually! The process can be simplified by enabling the Form-fill option. This feature configures your browser to fill the web forms, automatically. Refer to their earlier post â Manage Passwords and Form-Fill. 8] Add a Home buttonThe home button in a browser is a legacy thing which used to take the user back to a new tab and open it as it has been set. It is like the house icon next to the address bar. The Home button represents a physical button that aids the navigation by taking users directly to the Home screen (starting point of the site). 9] Import favorites, passwords, history into Microsoft Edge ChromiumIf you are planning to use Edge over any other browser, it would be a good idea to import settings, etc. from the old browser. The Import Feature works with Microsoft Edge (Legacy), Chrome, Firefox, and more.
TIP: You can also use enable and use Password Monitor. 10] Show the Favorites bar
In Edge Chromium, you have a better way to access favoritesâFavorites Button. It appears at the end, and outside of the address bar. When you click on it, it will reveal all the bookmarked pages and folders. It is better to use the button as it is less intrusive. 11] Auto-Hide the address barPress F11 to go full-screen. The Edge address bar will auto-hide. To make it appear, simply move the mouse to the top edge. Thereâs more! You might take interest in checking out some of the features of the Edge browser so that you are completely familiar with all the features of the web browser. It talks about how to Delete browsing history and cache, Share web pages, use Reading View, create Reading List, use the built-in PDF Reader, the Hub, Sync Support, Page Prediction feature, support for Dolby Audio and more. Microsoftâs browser is no exception to this rule. You can use these shortcuts to fasten your navigation process. For example, you can bookmark a website by simply hitting CTRL+D keys in combination and choose a folder to save the bookmark. See the complete list of these browser keyboard shortcuts. 20] Use Custom image option for New Tab Page in Edge
21] Take a scrolling screenshot of the webpageYou can take a scrolling screenshot of the webpage you are viewing. Press CTRL+Shift+S in Edge. Then use the pointer to select the entire webpage â even the part that is below the fold. 22] Enable and use Command PaletteCommand Palette feature in Edge browser (version 105 and higher) lets you perform actions that you may need in day-to-day browsing. For example, this feature lets you clear browsing data, toggle developer tools, move a tab backward, bookmark all tabs, and lots more from a single panel. Here is how to enable and use Command Palette in Microsoft Edge:
After enabling Command Palette, use the Ctrl+Shift+Space shortcut key to open the Command Palette panel. Type some keyboards in the text box and related actions will be visible. 23] Use Math SolverMath Solver is one of the interesting features of Microsoft Edge. It helps to solve Math problems (Calculus, Arithmetic, Trigonometry, Quadratic equations, etc.) with step-by-step explanations. To enable the Math Solver feature in Microsoft Edge:
Math Solver icon will appear on the Microsoft Edge toolbar. You can click that icon and then use the Math Solver feature in Microsoft Edge. 24] Remove Duplicate FavoritesYou may have imported a lot of favorites from other browsers as well as created many bookmarks over the period of time in Microsoft Edge. And, some of those favorites might be duplicated. Thankfully, Microsoft Edge comes with a built-in option to remove duplicate favorites from a profile with the same URL and name. For this, open the Edge browser and access a user profile. Press Ctrl+Shift+O hotkey to open the Favorites menu. There, click on the More options icon, select the Remove duplicate favorites option, and complete the process. Also read: 10 Work from Home extensions for Microsoft Edge browser. Thereâs more! Microsoft has made a change to the Windows PC keyboard for the first time in 30 years. Computers can now include a âCopilot keyâ â between the alt key and the left arrow key â which will open Microsoftâs artificial intelligence tools. Windows Copilot is intended to help out with difficult or mundane tasks, such as writing or summarising lengthy emails or making an AI-generated stockimage to include in a presentation. The company calls it copilot because it is intended to assist with those tasks, and leave the user responsible for them. The new key marks the first change to the PC keyboard since the introduction of the Windows key in 1994. That is used to bring up the start menu, though users often change its purpose or combine it with other keys for extra options. Almost any keyboard can be used with Windows PCs, and existing keyboards will obviously not get the new key. But Microsoftâs changes to both Windows and its own hardware keyboards have often led to broad and quick changes across the market, as in the case of the Windows key. Many upcoming computers will integrate the Copilot key, it said, including those that will be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show next week. The keyboard will be available from âlate February through Spring, including on upcoming Surface devicesâ, it said. Microsoft said that the new change was âanother transformative moment in their journey with Windowsâ. It suggested that the introduction of the new Copilot key marked the beginning of the era of the âAI PCâ. âWe believe it will empower people to participate in the AI transformation more easily,â it said in its announcement. âThe Copilot key joins the Windows key as a core part of the PC keyboard and when pressed, the new key will invoke the Copilot in Windows experience to make it seamless to engage Copilot in your day to dayâ Microsoft pointed to other work, including new software features that rely on machine learning as well as work with silicon companies to ensure that chips are optimised for artificial intelligence work. Copilot is not yet available everywhere. If a computer cannot access it, then pressing the button will open Windows Search instead. Microsoft Inspire 2023 news included updates for Security Copilot, Microsoft Defender, Purview and Sentinel. An early access program for Security Copilot. New bring-your-own-detections capabilities for Purview Insider Risk Management. And general availability for Mobile Threat Defense for stand-alone Defender for Business users. These are some of the biggest security announcements to come out of Microsoft Inspire 2023, the Redmond, Wash.-based vendorâs annual partner-focused event. Inspire runs online from Tuesday to Wednesday. [RELATED: Microsoft Says 15,000 Partners Are Driving Its $20 Billion Security Business] Microsoft Inspire 2023 Security NewsMicrosoft is recruiting more managed extended detection and response (MXDR) partners alongside first-party offerings to meet increased demand for remote threat disruption and containment capabilities, according to the vendor. Microsoft expects that by 2025, 60 percent of organizations will use that technology, up from 30 percent currently. The vendor even has a Microsoft Engineering Tested MXDR Solution status that started last year. Security partners of Microsoft have seen âa significant increase in their business,â according to the vendor. Partners have seen 14 percent growth year over year while partners focused on SMBs have seen âeven more dramatic demandââ37 percent market expansion this last year. And Microsoft will increase overall investments for security partners by about 50 percent this coming year, according to the vendor. That growth is unsurprising when 82 percent of ransomware attacks target small businesses, according to Microsoft. SMBs typically lack internal security specialists, hence the importance of solution providers. The number of Microsoft-detected password attacks has more than tripled in the past 12 months, from 1,287 per second to more than 4,000 per second. Total losses grew almost 50 percent from 2021 to 2022, from $6.9 billion to more than $10.2 billion last year. Other security news out of Microsoft Inspire 2023 include: *A new integration with Blackpoint Cyber *Graph APIs for Defender Threat Intelligence should allow for easier exporting and data ingestion *The Microsoft Graph eDiscovery Export API Is now generally available (GA) Read on for the biggest security announcements out of Inspire 2023. Security Copilot UpdatesIn the fall, Microsoft will open an early access program for Security Copilot, which leverages generative AI from GPT-4, the latest version of the OpenAI Large Language Model that is available in applications such as the massively popular ChatGPT chatbot. Partners and customers who use the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint enterprise networks security platform will get the invitation to join early access, according to the vendor. Security Copilot works with first- and third-party tools, according to the vendor. Microsoft plans to expand the program as time goes on. Microsoft also launched a Security Copilot design advisory council for MSSPs and ISVs to work with the vendor on building related products and services. The group is separate from the Microsoft Intelligent Security Association (MISA), which is also made up of MSSPs and ISVs who receive co-marketing resources and additional access to product teams for integration, among other benefits, according to the vendor. The design advisory council has a limited number of spots. Partners waiting for Security Copilotânow in previewâto become GA can help customers deploy the Microsoft Sentinel cloud-native security information and event management (SIEM) platform in the meantime. Microsoft unveiled Security Copilot in March. New Defender for Business FeaturesDefender for Business gained a new feature for streaming APIs. The feature is in preview for stand-alone Defender for Business and part of the Microsoft 365 Business Premium plan. Streaming APIs can help partners with advanced hunting and attack detection, according to the vendor. The feature should help partners who want to build their own Security Operations Center (SOC) or managed detection and response (MDR) service. Microsoft also made Mobile Threat Defense for standalone Defender for Business users GA. The feature extends mobile protection to smaller users. Defender for Business users gained a monthly summary report feature that helps security solution providers show their value to customers with threats prevented, current Microsoft Secure Score status and recommendations, according to the vendor. Microsoft Purview InnovationsMicrosoft unveiled a series of updates for tools under the Microsoft Purview banner. Purview Insider Risk Management has new bring-your-own-detection capabilities for partners to help customers with custom indicators, according to the vendor. Partners can bring in detections from non-Microsoft sources, such as Salesforce and other CRM platforms plus developer tool platforms. The Microsoft Graph eDiscovery Export API is now GA, according to the vendor. The API should help with scripting-enabled eDiscovery exports for external applications and partners. Confidential and highly sensitive Excel files labeled and protected with Purview Information Protection keep protections even after imported into Power BI datasets and reports. Microsoft also extended labeled and encrypted documents with user-defined permissions to SharePoint and OneDrive. And owners of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents can define permissions for people with access to shared, encrypted sensitive documents through the co-authoring feature. And Purview Data Loss Prevention now has the ability for security teams to prevent users from pasting sensitive data to specific websites or web applications through policies. Microsoft Defender NewsNews for tools and services within the Microsoft Defender umbrella include the new managed service Microsoft Defender Experts for XDR. Microsoft Defender Experts for XDR promises customers step-by-step guidance to respond to incidents, according to the vendor. Customers can also receive expertise when needed and stay up to date on emerging threats. A new Open App Connector Platform for Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps aims to make plug-ins easier for partners. New API connectors include the public preview of Asana and Miro. GA posture management capabilities for DocuSign, Citrix, Okta and GitHub are also part of the update. Microsoft has now made the settings management feature a native embed in Microsoft Defender for Endpoint for Windows, Linux and macOS. The vendor promises that this removes dependencies on Microsoft Intune, with users no longer needing to switch portals. Graph APIs for Defender Threat Intelligence should allow for easier exporting and data ingestion to Defender, Sentinel and third-party applications, according to Microsoft. And Microsoft Defender External Attack Surface Managementâs data connector aims to allow for standard live dashboard development and longer-term reporting through Power BI, according to the vendor. Microsoft Sentinel BudgetingFor partners in conversation with customers around Microsoft Sentinel adoption, the vendor has changed the SIEMâs price to include the Azure Monitor Log Analytics price. The price now ranges from a pay-as-you-go $4.30 per GB ingested to $11,550 a day for 5,000 GB a day. The pricing rolls out to all regions this month. New Microsoft Sentinel workspaces are automatically on simplified pricing. Existing workspaces are unchanged until users move to the simplified price plan in the portal. A 31-day free trial offer for new and existing workspaces that enable Microsoft Sentinel is also running. The offer is for free ingestion of up to 10 GB a day of Sentinel and Log Analytics, according to the vendor. Blackpoint Cyber IntegrationMicrosoft unveiled a new integration with Blackpoint Cyber for a 24-hour cloud response MDR service for Microsoft 365 environments, including Microsoft 365 Business Premium. The two vendors also have a managed EDR service for Defender for Business customers, according to Microsoft. Both integrations should help partners without the resources for an in-house SOC. Like Microsoft, Blackpoint has MSPs in its go-to-market strategy. Microsoft EntraAlthough unveiled just before Inspire, recent previews for Microsoft Entra bear repeating for partners interested in network security and security service edge (SSE). Microsoft expanded Entra into SSE with the launch of Internet Access and Private Access features. Internet Access protects against malicious traffic and threats from the open internet. Private Access applies to private applications and resources from any device or network. Microsoft also rebranded its Azure Active Directory offering into Microsoft Entra ID as an effort âto unify their product family,â according to the vendor. Within hours of millions of you unwrapping shiny new smartphones courtesy of Santa Claus, here comes a timely reminder of the dangers that lurk within, andâabove allâthe need for us all to take responsibility for their device security, and not rely solely on Google and Apple to keep us safe. Just days after millions of Android users were warned to check their devices for dangerous âSpyLoanâ malware-laced apps, there here comes âXamalicious,â a new backdoor that has been distributed via multiple apps on Googleâs official Play Store. âAndroid/Xamalicious trojans are apps related to health, games, horoscope, and productivity,â warns McAfee in a report that hit just as the holiday period started. And while Google removed the apps from its store ahead of publication, McAffee warns Android users that âmost of these apps are still available for download in third-party marketplaces.â The apps are designed to trick users into agreeing to their requests for accessibility privileges, which enable apps to take control of device features normally locked down. Of all the warnings embedded in this report, this is the one which should concern you the most. This is the second such accessibility warning for Android users inside a week. The other being the re-emergence of the âChameleonâ trojan that triggers an HTML page that again tricks users into agreeing accessibility requests, working around Androidâs newly improved ârestricted settings,â and in this case will then compromise a deviceâs biometric security to steal financial information. âThe manipulation of accessibility settings and dynamic activity launches,â warns ThreatFabric, which identified this latest iteration, âfurther underscore that the new Chameleon is a sophisticated Android malware strain.â But, to be clear, one that remains harmless unless users unlock the door for its sophisticated malware to infect their devices. As for Xamalicious, the Play Store apps you need to delete immediately are listed belowâremember, Google banning an app on its store doesnât delete if from your device. And while this warning has come with download numbers still in the hundreds of thousands rather than millions, there will be many more installs from third-party stores, for those of you venturing onto that particularly thin ice. Xamalicious Apps:
Xamalicious takes a more simplistic approach to gaining its privileges, which it then uses to facilitate communication with its command and control server. Once installed, Xamalicious will send back all the device information needed to determine whether an attack is likely to yield resultsâhardware, OS, installed apps, location and network. Itâs at this stage that it will be instructed to download and install the malicious code it will use to take control of the device or trigger background activity. Although the newly discovered Chameleon variant takes a different approach, presenting to users as a Google Chrome app, itâs the same accessibility privilege abuse that facilitates account and device takeovers. This trojan stops the device requesting biometric authentication, pushing for a PIN instead, which then enables it to steal user account credentials. âAlthough the victim's biometric data remains out of reach,â ThreatFabric explains, âthey force the device to fall back to PIN authentication, thereby bypassing biometric protection entirely.â Full details of the attack conops can be found in the reports (1,2), but in reality, those specifics are much less important than the social engineering both trojans rely on to attack devices. In reality, if youâre potentially likely to grant accessibility privileges to a horoscope or calorie counting app, youâre unlikely to spot other indicators of compromise on your smartphone. As Google warns Android users, âharmful apps might ask you to change settings that put your device or data at risk. To protect you from harmful apps, some device settings may be restricted when you install an app. These restricted settings canât be changed unless you allow restricted settings.â And so, the resolution here is extraordinarily simpleâdo not grant such privileges to ANY app EVERânot unless itâs from a blue chip brandâthink Apple, Google or Microsoftâand logically requires such access, given your restricted movements or senses in using such an app. Google is much more open than Apple when it comes to app permissions on devices and the availability of apps beyond its official store. Its less-locked-down-than-Apple approach also opens the (back)door to more Play Store malware than is found on Appleâs App Store. It comes down to user choice in Googleâs mind. âWeâre trying to strike a balance,â Sundar Pichai explained last month, âWe believe in choice.â But with such choice comes responsibility. And while that includes being acutely aware of the access being requested by apps, it also runs to the nature of the apps you allow onto your smartphone and thus into your life in the first place. My advice to Android users is to regularly check this. In âSettingsâ, tap âPrivacyâ and then âAccessibility Special Accessâ. Check youâre familiar with any app listed, and if not tap on the app to remove its access. In the same âSettingsâ screen, you can also check other permissions youâve granted. Itâs always good housekeeping to have a sweep once in a whileâyou never know what might have crept in. Your smartphone can likely access your financial accounts, your work email, your private thoughts and messages. It knows where you live and work, who you love and who you donât, even your kids and their schools. As tempting as it might be to install a flashlight or AI aging app, every app you install increases the risk of compromise. Just take a moment to think whether you need the app andâwhen the app requests access to data and device featuresâwhat that app really needs to know. Microsoft Corp. has made a significant shakeup of its security team, as its longtime leader was put into a new role and a new chief information security officer was appointed Tuesday. Igor Tsyganskiy, who joined Microsoft four months ago in the role of chief strategy officer, has been appointed the new CISO, replacing Bret Arsenault, who had held the role for 14 years. Though Microsoft is hardly alone in being targeted by attackers and indeed presents a big target thanks to its size and pervasivness, it has suffered some large breaches recently. They include accidentally making 38 terabytes of internal data, including passwords, publicly accessible through a GitHub repository in September, a few months after Chinese hackers compromised a Microsoft engineerâs account to breach email accounts belonging to U.S. government agencies. And in August, the Cyber Safety Review Board launched an investigation into a high-profile breach that hit Microsoft Corp.âs Exchange Online email platform earlier this year. Itâs not clear whether those or other incidents spurred the shakeup. Arsenault, who has been moved to a new role as chief security adviser, has been at Microsoft since 1990, according to his LinkedIn profile. He started as a senior engineer before serving in various security roles, including being appointed as Microsoftâs CISO in October 2009. Prior to joining Microsoft, Tsyganskiy served as chief technology officer at Bridgewater Associates LP, a hedge fund that services institutional clients, including pension funds, endowments, foundations, foreign governments and central banks. Before that, Tsyganskiy worked as the senior vice president of product management at Salesforce Inc. and was the head of the advanced technology group at SAP SE. Charlie Bell, Microsoftâs executive vice president of security, said on LinkedIn that the decision to shake up the companyâs security leadership is part of Microsoftâs Secure Future Initiative. The initiative, announced by Microsoft in November, is an internal program designed to enhance the security of Microsoftâs vast array of software offerings. Central to the Secure Future Initiative is an emphasis on reducing vulnerabilities within Microsoftâs product ecosystem. The company plans to increase the use of memory-safe programming languages like Java, C# and Python, which minimize the risk of specific bugs exploitable by cyber attackers. Microsoft is also adopting CodeQL, a GitHub-developed open-source tool for automated vulnerability scanning in code and streamlining its threat modeling processes. With the initiative, Microsoft aims to double the pace of fixing vulnerabilities in its cloud services through the use of a remediation methodology called dSDL, which integrates continuous integration and continuous delivery software to accelerate the deployment of security patches. âSo much of the world depends on Microsoft for its digital safety and they need look no further than the news headlines to know they live in a rapidly evolving threat landscape, one that is highly demanding and drives us to continually innovate and deliver,â Bell said on LinkedIn. âNavigating all this requires a tremendous amount of leadership know-how and experience.â Bell added that Tsyganskiy brings a âdeep knowledge and experience from his previous role outside of Microsoft and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with him on this important work.â Although not mentioned by Bell, Benzinga reported that the shakeup also included Aanchal Gupta, Microsoftâs deputy CISO who was expected to take over from Arsenault. Gupta has been shifted to the role of technical adviser to Ales Holecek, Microsoftâs corporate vice president of the Office Product Group in the Experiences and Devices division.
