What Makes a Great Salesforce Certification Course?

Going beyond a practice exam, you need a certificate course that meets you where you are. The best Salesforce certification programs meet the following criteria

Taught by an Experienced Salesforce Trainer

Are you an IT employee? If so, you’re well aware that Salesforce is a sophisticated customer relationship management platform. Make sure you get an instructor who can break down terms, concepts and methodology. Look for a Salesforce trainer who’s well-versed in the platform and understands how to get you through the online certificate program. A Salesforce consultant may know the platform, but make sure they teach in a manner that speaks to you.

Interactive and Includes Resources

You can’t expect to become skilled in Salesforce by practicing a multi-page document. For this reason, the course should be interactive and include tasks or projects that allow you to apply the knowledge you’ve learned in the modules. It’s also a bonus if the instructor provides demonstrations for you to reference at a later date if needed.

Most importantly, the course should include at least 1 practice test to test your proficiency in the material. Otherwise, you won’t know whether you’re prepared to take the salesforce certification test or if you need more time to study.

Self-Paced

Some classes may force you to rush through the material to meet deadlines. As you explore sales Certification courses, confirm that you’re allowed to work at your own pace prior to the Salesforce exam. That way, you can take your time and deliver yourself the best chance at passing the applicable test on the first attempt.

Choose the Right Salesforce Certification Course

Enrolling in a reputable Salesforce certification course is the best way to set yourself up for success. You’ll take the guesswork out of trying to figure out what concepts to focus on and you’ll increase the odds of passing on the first try.

New to Salesforce? Consider a free course to get acclimated with the platform. Once you’ve mastered the basics, move on to more complex material — enroll in intermediate and advanced courses.

Confirm that the course is taught by a Salesforce trainer with a stellar track record. The course should also be self-paced so you have an ample amount of time to understand, retain and apply the information shared in the class.

Course Outlines and Syllabi

Course Outlines

A one-page course outline is required by university policy for every course offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences. Instructors will receive an email reminder through TRACS to upload their course outlines. Outlines must be available to students at least two weeks prior to the start of the registration period or two months before the semester begins (March, July and November). Note that the one-page outline is different than the syllabus. See below for syllabus information.

Instructors upload their course outlines online. Please follow these instructions:

1.    Log in to outlines.sfu.ca.
2.    Select semester, course and section.  Click the round icon.
3.    Input data to the fields.  (This can be done by free-format typing or cutting & pasting)
4.    Save.
5.    Scroll back up to the top of the page to confirm that the outline was saved successfully. (See green box)
6.    Once the outline is finalized, click “Continue”, go to the next page, and click “Submit”.
7.    The system will automatically advise the program assistant that the outline is ready to be activated.

Before your outline is activated online, the program assistant will review to ensure that all required fields are complete.

If you have taught the course before, you may want to use the previous outline as a starting point and make any desired changes. The course content should correspond to the SFU Calendar description. If it does not conform closely, you must apply for approval before any changes can be published. Contact the appropriate program assistant, depending on whether you are teaching an undergraduate or graduate course, if you have not taught a course before and would like a copy of a previous course outline for your reference, or if you would like to apply for approval to upload content that does not closely conform to the SFU Calendar description.

Refer to this link to search for the archived course outlines: http://www.sfu.ca/outlines.html. The system has archived outlines starting from Fall 2015 onwards.

Course Syllabi and Syllabus Policies

Refer to the Policies and Procedures Related to Syllabi Review, Development and Distribution (this link requires your ID to login) for more guidance about drafting a syllabi and to locate a syllabi template.

All HSCI courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels must have a detailed syllabus that delineates course objectives and means of assessment. Attached to this policy is a template to help you design of a syllabus so that it outlines the appropriate level of detail in terms of content, objectives, and assessment tools. The recommended text in regards to grading distributions, student conduct, and other policies are also provided.

All new and substantively updated/revised courses must be reviewed as indicated below. Syllabi submitted for review do not need to be in the final draft.  The GSC and UGSC are generally concerned with the review of the following:  1) the statement of learning objectives; 2) an outline of topics; and 3) a list of required readings/texts.

You will receive an email from the TRACS system to upload your syllabus, in accordance with the following schedule:

For new or substantially revised courses, feedback will be provided to instructors three weeks prior to the start of the term. Notably for graduate courses, where accreditation requirements demand that courses meet certain core competency requirements, it is expected that faculty will comply with requests for revision.

The course syllabus represents a contract between the instructor and student. It is important that it clearly outlines expectations, grading and attendance policies, and appropriate student conduct guidelines to all students enrolled in the course.

A syllabus does not need to be provided in hard copy and can be distributed through Canvas or through other online formats. The scheduling of subjects may be changed after the start of a term, but once the syllabus has been circulated to students, it is strongly advised not to make further changes to: a) grading policies; b) policies regarding student conduct and academic honesty; or c) the timing of key exams.

Dreamforce 2019: Salesforce Outlines Initiatives To Ignite Ecosystem Growth

Co-founder and CTO Parker Harris wanted to shun consultants 20 years ago. Now he tells them they are essential to Salesforce's growth strategy and delivering successful customer engagements

ARTICLE TITLE HERE

Soon after founding Salesforce, CTO Parker Harris forcefully argued to CEO Marc Benioff that the new company should avoid building a channel.

"Marc, whatever you do, they do not want consultants," Harris said he told his co-founder twenty years ago.

Harris wanted the innovative cloud-based CRM to be a no-code platform, and systems integrators and consultants would ruin that vision, "because people are going to write code."

Thankfully, Benioff rejected his bad advice, Salesforce's CTO told thousands of ecosystem partners attending a keynote Tuesday at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco.

[Related: Salesforce Dreamforce Keynote: AI, Integration, Alicia Keys And Protestors]

"We need you," Harris told those consultants he once hoped to shun.

Harris now sees partners who "speak the language of the customer" as vital to the company's strategy of extending into industry verticals. And Salesforce especially needs SIs as it leverages its MuleSoft platform to bring in data from Oracle and SAP ERPs, enabling implementation of a "single source of truth" concept presented through the Customer Truth 360 tooling unveiled earlier that day.

As the CRM leader chases Benioff's ambitious goal to double the business over the next few years, recruiting new partners, enabling existing ones to scale, and encouraging startups to form is a larger priority than ever before. The company has previously said it's aiming to build a channel of 250,000 services partners.

To that end, Salesforce channel leaders outlined specific initiatives Tuesday around enhanced advisory services, a new Architect Certification Program, expanded partner learning, and new resources to help customers identify implementation partners best-suited to their aims.

Tyler Prince, Salesforce's executive vice president of industries, innovation and partners, told representatives of the consultancies, digital agencies and ISVs attending the partner keynote that Salesforce is focused on helping them meet the increasing demands of customers in an era of rapid disruption.

"Salesforce is a different kind of company. I hope we're a different kind of partner to you as well," Prince said.

The opportunity for Salesforce's channel is massive, Prince noted, citing an IDC report that predicts by 2024 the Salesforce ecosystem will generate six times more revenue than Salesforce itself.

"Most of that is represented by solutions and services you provide," Prince told partners.

Kai Hsiung, chief growth officer at Silverline, was one of those in attendance, as he's been for every Dreamforce partner keynote.

To eventually enable the 250,000 partners needed to support Benioff's $28 billion revenue target, "the partner program will have to grow and adjust based on the different partner types out there," Hsiung told CRN.

Salesforce is making a valiant effort to that, Hsiung said.

"The next step is to figure out how to rightsize the enablement based on partner size, industry focus, product focus, geographic focus," Hsiung said. And "they are very much in tune with the feedback partners like Silverline are providing them."

That's why this year Salesforce has introduced so many new partner programs and initiatives, while also ending programs that became less relevant, he added.

Lori Steele, Salesforce's executive vice president for global customer success and professional services, earned a round of applause when telling the keynote's attendees: "our purpose as an organization is not to compete with the partner ecosystem, but to work together, to collaborate and bring the best of Salesforce to their customers."

Currently, half of Salesforce professional services are delivered through partners. "That's good, but it's not good enough," Steele said.

Customers are "really looking for us to come together with shared goals, shared measures," she said.

To deliver more value through its channel, Salesforce is implementing a new engagement model through which Salesforce's advisory services arm looks to collaborate closer with the channel. Salesforce will bring partners into engagements at critical junctures in the customer lifecycle and work closely with them to ensure challenging integration projects are successful, Steele said.

Salesforce wants to leverage the capabilities of partners and complement their skills, while "doing the right thing for customers at the right time," she told Dreamforce attendees.

Enablement is another important component of that vision, she said, and the company is doing "brilliant things with Trailhead."

That Salesforce learning platform isn't just about training, but also bringing best practices to partners and offering them opportunities to shadow Salesforce engineers in the field.

Randy Davis, a partner at Chicago-based Salesforce consultancy Sikich, said Salesforce execs delivered "an inspiring message to the whole partner community" at the keynote.

That message is reflected in an increased investment in partner programs, Davis told CRN.

"As they grow, they need to rely on partners more," Davis said. "It's extremely important partners are enabled with the right training and resources to make customers successful."

Earlier this year, Salesforce launched Trailhead for Partners, a learning system aiming to help consultants develop the talent they need to fuel their growth. Building upon that, a Partner Learning Camp was introduced at this year's Dreamforce, powered by the customized myTrailhead platform.

Prince also suggested to partners they familiarize themselves with innovations on the AppExchange marketplace.

"At a rapid rate, customers are going on the AppExchange not only to find cool apps, but to find a consultant," Prince said. "Use this to your advantage."

Salesforce-Owned Slack Grows Partner Program

‘The mantra is one program, one team – that’s gonna take a while to fully come to fruition, but we’re pretty far along that path,’ Richard Hasslacher, Slack’s vice president of alliances and channels, tells CRN in an interview.

Recent Salesforce acquisition Slack has expanded its nascent partner program to include Slalom, Accenture, Deloitte, IBM and other Salesforce consulting partners, with more resources for Slack partners coming to Salesforce’s partner learning platform in the new year.

The investment in growing Slack’s partner program while encouraging existing Salesforce consulting partners to grow their Slack practices will help the San Francisco-based companies bring integrated solutions to the market, Richard Hasslacher, Slack’s vice president of alliances and channels, told CRN in an interview.

Before Slack announced the new partners, the communication platform’s partners in the Americas included Lakewood, Ohio-based Onix Networking; San Mateo, Calif.-based Cprime and Canada-based Robots & Pencils, according to Slack’s website.

“These organizations are driving hundreds of millions and billions of dollars in their services ecosystem around Salesforce,” Hasslacher said. “They understand that every single Salesforce cloud will have Slack as a component, and therefore every solution that an ISV brings to market or an SI brings to market needs to have Slack as part of it.”

Salesforce and Slack teams are engaging partners on building and advising customers on their first joint solutions, he said.

“The mantra is one program, one team – that‘s gonna take a while to fully come to fruition, but we’re pretty far along that path,” he said. “When they think about the digital HQ (headquarters) and what it means, product is one aspect of that, but transformation is really the – in many ways – larger component. That’s really where they rely heavily on their partners to bring that to life. The digital HQ doesn’t happen without partners. Period.”

Salesforce announced new integrations with Slack under the platform name of “Slack-First Customer 360” earlier this year. The companies announced more integrations this year, including ways for marketing teams to work with Salesforce data in Slack, for sales workers to work together in Slack to close a deal and customer service workers to collaborate and solve issues quickly.

The acquisition appears to be paying off for Salesforce. In the company’s fourth quarter earnings reported in February, Salesforce said that Slack collaboration applications generated $312 million in revenue in the fourth quarter for Salesforce and $592 million during the second half of fiscal 2022 – the period Salesforce has owned Slack following Salesforce’s $27.7 billion acquisition of Slack on July 21, 2021.

“Slack continues to exceed their expectations in every way,” Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor said on the earnings call. And repeating what Salesforce executives have said during recent investor presentations, Taylor said Salesforce does not anticipate any “material” mergers or acquisitions in the near term.

Mike Jortberg, global Salesforce practice sales director for Seattle-based Slack and Salesforce partner Slalom, told CRN in an interview that Slalom worked with an unnamed biotechnology company on a six-month engagement to bring 20 disparate Slack workspaces into a Slack Enterprise Grid.

The job included onboarding more than 2,800 employees and creating a simpler way to share data and converse across countries and time zones compared to using email while maintaining security and compliance needs.

While Slack has a reputation for an easy-to-use interface, the added complexity of getting the most out of Slack and Salesforce integrations creates an opportunity for consulting partners, he said.

“The use cases of people talking with less friction is irrelevant of industry, irrelevant of size, irrelevant of all the different things that you typically do market segmentation on,” Jortberg said.

Slalom is working on Slack- and Salesforce-enabled solutions around change management, analytics and business-to-consumer and business-to-business interactions, Katie Dunlap, Slalom managing director of global Salesforce capabilities and industries, told CRN in an interview. She sees the potential to deepen work with existing Slalom customers while gaining new customers through the new Slack practice.

“We are seeing that their markets can easily adapt and relate to how Slack can support their clients,” Dunlap said. “It actually spans across their entire existing clients, future clients because there‘s opportunity here that they can see and understand.”

Hasslacher said that every general manager of Salesforce’s cloud offerings has a roadmap to continue adding integrations with Slack, and partners will see more Slack-related learning content, certifications, badges and competencies become available by March 1.

“You’ll see additional badges and certifications and trails around that experience along with technical architect, learning, delivery, etcetera,” he said.

Tyler Prince, Salesforce’s channel chief, and Hasslacher told CRN in an interview that Salesforce and Slack partners can expect to see more integration announcements and industry-specific solutions from the companies and technology partners in 2022.

The companies and their partners have already begun rolling out and developing solutions to use Slack as a user interface for Salesforce data and to use Slack to automate tasks and make employees more productive. Prince has told CRN in the past that 90 percent of deal wins include Salesforce partners.

“There’s an opportunity for their partners to work with companies to think about that new way of working and what’s the impact on the employee, how do you bring more employees along on this digital journey,” Prince said. “We want Slack partners to thrive and take advantage of this massive opportunity that’s in front of them and leverage their expertise.”

Salesforce’s partner-facing employees will also work with partners on solutions using both companies’ capabilities, Prince said.

“From the top down, we‘ll make sure that every one of their partner managers, every one of their teams in the partner organization is asking what are you doing to benefit from and grow your capabilities around Slack,” Prince said. “I will manage this through the team in how they bring these partners along in their journey and be able to support them.”
