From new Amazon S3 and public cloud integrations to a revamped OneFS operating system, here are the 10 key features inside Dell Technologiesâ new PowerScale storage product line, which is replacing Dell EMC Isilon. Dellâs New Software, Public Cloud Integration And MoreDell Technologies Tuesday launched its new flagship file and object data storage product line, PowerScale, setting what it calls a ânew industry standardâ for how organizations capture and leverage unstructured data across public clouds and on-premises in a compact 1U footprint. âThis is the next-level unstructured data storage solution made for the data era that they are now in. They feel like this is the new industry standard,â said Scott Millard, senior vice president, specialty sales, global channel, alliances and OEM at Dell Technologies, in an interview with CRN. âI really think this launch turns on a whole new market opportunity at the edge for all of their partners, and thereâs also tremendous potential by having it directly connected to multiple public clouds.â Fresh off its new midrange storage line, PowerStore, the Round Rock, Texas-based worldwide storage market leader unveiled a slew of new software and hardware with PowerScale, providing the foundation it says companies need to unlock the potential of their data no matter where it resides. PowerScale will replace Dell EMCâs popular Isilon product line. CRN breaks down the 10 most important software, hardware and technology capabilities PowerScale is bringing to the storage market. New DataIQ Software Solves Data Management IssuesDellâs new DataIQ software allows customers and partners to tag, track, analyze and report on unstructured dataâwhich is typically uncategorized and found in silosâalong with the ability to intelligently move data to where itâs needed. Included with PowerScale appliances at no additional cost, DataIQ software breaks down data silos by delivering a single view of file and object data cross Dell EMC, third-party and public cloud storage environments. âData management is one of the biggest unsolved challenges for their customers today. Thatâs what DataIQ will solve for customers,â said Caitlin Gordon, Dellâs vice president of product marketing, storage and data protection, in an interview with CRN. Gordon said DataIQ will first discover the data across all of its unstructured portfolio including PowerScale, PowerStore and Dell EMC ECS. âIt will be able to discover all the data across the file data, the unstructured data, and it creates that global search and index across public clouds,â she said. âThen you can discover the data and better understand what that data isâwhether itâs a file or object, what type of meta-data is associated with it, etc. Then you can actually do something with that like set up the policies to be able to logically group this data no matter where it resides.â With DataIQ, customers can gain better control over their data and ensure the right teams have access to it by making sure data is stored on the correct tier within their storage environment. OneFS Operating System For PowerScaleBest known for being the operating system for powering Dell EMCâs Isilon storage line, Dellâs new OneFS operating system for PowerScale includes new capabilities such as enhanced data reduction technology, Amazon S3 object access and support for Ansible, Kubernetes and OpenShift. In addition, the API and policy-driven OneFS version 9.0 has now been decoupled from Dell hardware. âBy decoupling the OneFS software and making it software-defined, itâs really enabled us to deploy on PowerEdge servers, which immediately opens up the edge as well as some new capabilities in the cloud,â said Dellâs Gordon. âWeâre bringing the power of OneFS to edge locations and enabling channel partners bring all of OneFS now out to a broader customer base because they can consume it not only at a lower price point but in a smaller footprint, which makes a big difference.â New support for protocols including FTP, NFS, SMB and HDFS will allow customers to run a large number of traditional and modern applications without compatibility concerns. With OneFS automation, organizations can auto-balance data, eliminate hot spots and discover and add nodes to existing OneFS clusters online. The PowerScale FamilyThe PowerScale platform is built on Dellâs PowerEdge servers. The new family features new 1U PowerEdge-based PowerScale nodes and existing Isilon all-flash, hybrid and achieve nodes running the OneFS 9.0 operating system. PowerScale provides the performance needed to handle demanding artificial intelligence, analytics, the Internet of Things, digital media, health-care and life sciences workloads. The Dell product line includes PowerScale F600 All-NVMe and PowerScale F200 All-Flash solutions. It can deliver up to 15.8 million input-output operations per second (IOPS), and new all-flash PowerScale nodes are up to five times faster than their Isilon predecessor. Enhanced inline data reduction makes the platform up to four times more efficient than previous Isilon versions. âThe feedback from their partners has been, âWe need a lower capacity and a lower-cost entry point for scale-out NAS, especially to open up these edge opportunities. They also need to expand their cloud capabilities,ââ said Dellâs Millard. âThose have been two things weâve heard strongly from the partners, and thatâs what weâve done with PowerScale.â Public Cloud Integration, Google Cloud ServicePowerScale for multi-cloud can directly connect to all major public clouds as a managed service, ideal for customers looking to move or deploy demanding applications in the cloud. PowerScale allows seamless mobility to public clouds including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. âWe have their OneFS [software] capability either natively available through Google Cloud or directly connected to multiple public clouds. Itâs really taking this software-defined architecture of OneFS and enabling their customers to accelerate innovation,â said Dellâs Gordon. âWith PowerScale, they can deploy in more flexible locations, support more use cases and really help their customers get to that innovation faster.â Dell Technologies Cloud PowerScale for Google Cloud is a native cloud service that combines the performance, scale and consistent experience of PowerScale with the simplicity and economics of Google Cloud, according to Gordon. âYou can marry all the incredible analytics algorithms that Google has built into their platform with this impressive scale-out NAS platform PowerScale,â said Gordon. Introducing Amazon S3 AccessPowerScaleâs OneFS software features broad multiprotocol support including new Amazon S3 support for modern applications relying on object storage. Dellâs Gordon said the new integration with Amazon S3 enables customers to develop cloud-native applications and leverage a single infrastructure on the back end. âIt gives you really an incredibly comprehensive connectivity and access to a single file system, thousands of connections, multiprotocolsâall connecting to the same file system at the same time. So you can support this diverse number of different types of file workloads, all with a single operation and single file system,â she said. PowerScale allows S3 file and object access across the same platform with no need to migrate and copy data to and from a secondary source. âSo customers can read and write data simultaneously through NFS and S3 now. Theyâre not going to have to migrate data from one platform to another to leverage NFS on one and S3 on anotherâthey can leverage a single platform and make it easy to have file and object access at the same time, to the same file system, on the same platform,â she said. âFrom an overall IT infrastructure standpoint, you keep a single piece of infrastructure in place.â PowerScale F200 âIdealâ For The Edge With Low Entry Price PointA major focus in the new PowerScale F200 all-flash platform was to create a low-cost entry offering with high bandwidth that would open up new doors for channel partners. âThe F200 has a small footprint, a 1U appliance, with incredibly high bandwidth that is really ideal for some of these edge locations so that you can process data at the edge in real time and then simply send the results back to the core data center,â said Gordon, adding that the starting price point for the F200 is âlowerâ than other competitive offerings. For the all-flash PowerScale F200, Millard said Dell has streamlined the special pricing process and created channel sales incentives as well as built-in margin protection for partners versus direct and non-deal registered partners. âThe F200 is going to tuck into their programs and incentives focused on the velocity side of the business,â he said. No Node Left Behind,â No Forklift Upgrades EverDell said no forklift upgrades will be necessary in the âmigration-freeâ PowerScale design with the ability to simply add nodes to any cluster. âThis is not a, âTake your controller and swap it out with something new.â Itâs add a node, it will discover it, auto-balance it and if you want to retire a node you can do thatâall seamlessly, all nondisruptively,â said Dellâs Gordon. âWhen you buy what was an Isilon node, and now going forward a PowerScale node, you will never have to leave that node behind. You can keep it in your cluster, in your file system, and when you want a new one, itâs going to automatically discover that. You can add that node quickly and it will automatically balance it. If you do need to retire an old node, you can do that very simply with no downtime at all.â Gordon said PowerScaleâs AutoBalance scale-out ability automatically balances data across the cluster to make sure customers are utilizing their assets in the most efficient way possible. âOf course, thereâs great resilience built in as well because of that multinode architecture,â she added. CloudIQ Included With PowerScaleDell EMCâs proactive health monitoring software, CloudIQ, is included in the new PowerScale storage line. CloudIQ infrastructure monitoring and analytics software combines machine learning and human intelligence to provide customers with real-time performance and capacity analysis as well as historical tracking for a single view of their infrastructure. âCloudIQ is all about reducing risk so you can identify and avoid issues and really get to troubleshooting quickly,â said Gordon. âYou can plan ahead with their capacity forecasting and overall Boost productivity because not only does CloudIQ come with PowerScale and PowerStore, but in all of their storage platforms. It will be coming across their entire infrastructure portfolio from Dell Technologies as well. ⊠A channel partner can be the one who [is] proactively monitoring a data centerâs health.â Dell Technologies On DemandThe new unstructured storage line is part of the consumption-based Dell Technologies On Demand program via Dell Financial Services where customers can buy storage capacity as needed. By leveraging Dell Technologies On Demand, PowerScale customers can respond to workload spikes and new service requests with elastic capacity and cloud economics. There are several flexible pay-per-use choices with short- and long-term commitment options for PowerScale including a one-year term for flexible consumption. There are three different consumption and as-a-service offerings available for customers to choose from in Dell Technologies On Demand: Pay As You Grow, Data Center Utility And Flex On Demand. Dellâs metering-based approach is Flex On Demand, in which customers pay only for the technology needed, while providing access to ready buffer capacity with payments that adjust up and down to match usage. Scale Without DisruptionPowerScale clusters can scale from 11 TB of raw capacity to 60 PB and millions of file operations without disruption or costly downtime for customers. Nodes can be added to either PowerScale or an existing Isilon cluster in just 60 seconds. Through flexible failover policies, PowerScale delivers up to 85 percent storage utilization across a cluster and can sustain multinode failures. Research firm IDC predicts that by 2025, 80 percent of data is going to be unstructured, while Gartner is projecting unstructured data capacity to triple over the next five years driven by new use cases like critical Hadoop, machine, deep learning workloads and the edge. âThis launch really turns on a whole new market opportunity at the edge for their partners as well as those who have strong vertical industry practices,â said Millard. âItâs an exciting time to be at Dell.â 'Now they can go to the edge: regional banks, remote sites, retail stores, hospitals with PowerScale, which will be the highest- performing solution out there,' says Keith Odom, executive vice president of Dell partner RoundTower Technologies. Dell Technologies' new PowerScale storage line opens the door for channel partners to attack the edge unlike ever before through new native public cloud integration, unstructured data software, and a 1U platform that can scale from 11 TB of raw capacity to 60 PB and millions of file operations. âThis is a home run for Dell,â said Keith Odom, executive vice president, systems engineering and services, at RoundTower Technologies, a Cincinnati-based Dell Technologies partner. âPowerScale is going downmarket in a space that maybe they havenât been able to compete in as well as in the past based on price. Now they can go to the edge: regional banks, remote sites, retail stores, hospitals with PowerScale, which will be the highest-performing solution out there. So from a channel partner perspective, thatâs a new space that they havenât went after in the past because there wasnât a good solution that made sense from an ROI perspective for their clients. This now opens a new market segment for us.â Dellâs new PowerScale storage systems, which replace the companyâs highly popular Isilon storage line, will create a new industry standard for how businesses capture and capitalize on unstructured data such as videos, images, social media content and documents. PowerScaleâs OneFS operating system introduces new software capabilities including enhanced data reduction technology, support for Ansible, Kubernetes and Red Hatâs OpenShift, as well as access to Amazonâs S3 object storage. PowerScale can directly connect to major public clouds including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure as a managed service, ideal for customers looking to move or deploy demanding applications in the cloud. [Related: Dell Widens Server Market Share Over HPE As Market Drops 6%] âWe have their OneFS [software] capability either natively available through Google Cloud or directly connected to multiple public clouds,â said Caitlin Gordon, vice president of product marketing, storage and data protection at Dell Technologies, in an interview with CRN. âWe have the ability to consume PowerScale as a service and leverage the public cloud compute of your choice and have the flexibility to switch between public clouds and never have to move the data.â RoundTowerâs Odom said OneFS for Google is more of a native Isilon solutionââbasically Isilon in the cloud they built with Google.â He said Dell partners can now leverage public cloud-native services to drive lower costs, add flexibility and get data to the edge for customers. The new Powerscale All-Flash 200 and All-NVMe appliances are built on Dell PowerEdge servers. Nodes can be added to a PowerScale cluster in 60 seconds, while the storage system delivers up to 15.8 million input-output operations per second (IOPS). PowerScale is powered by an enhanced Dell EMC OneFS operating system and new DataIQ software that breaks down data silos by delivering a single view of file and object data across Dell, third-party and public cloud storage environments. DataIQ allows customers and partners to tag, track, analyze and report on unstructured dataâwhich is typically uncategorized and found in silos âalong with the ability to intelligently move data to where itâs needed. Dellâs Gordon said DataIQ gets customers out of the storage management business and into data management. âDataIQ is all about being able to discover, understand and then better act on and leverage the data you already have,â said Gordon. âIt will be able to discover all the data across the file data, the unstructured data, and it creates that global search and index across public clouds. Then you can discover the data and better understand what that data isâwhether itâs a file or object, what type of metadata is associated with it, etc. Then you can actually do something with that like set up the policies to be able to logically group this data no matter where it resides.â RoundTowerâs Odom said his company, which made CRNâs 2020 Tech Elite 250 list, has already tested the software and plans to create a services practice based on DataIQ. He said thereâs a big âgap in the marketâ regarding different offerings working seamlessly across a customer environment. âEverybodyâs tools work on their stuff, but thereâs not a lot of tools that work across their portfolio, third-party solutions and the public cloudâDataIQ does that. So having this piece of software that gives you a full view is powerful and gives us a lot of good insight on client data so you can make the right decision,â Odom said. RoundTower is planning a professional services offering based on DataIQ around data fragmentation assessment as well managed services for PowerScale. âWhen they sell the customer PowerScale, they can now leverage DataIQ to make sure that as the environment grows, new cold storage is being put in the right place. As more and more data is saved, they can keep the data deduped, keeping their cost down and their environment as efficient as possible,â he said. PowerScaleâs OneFS operating systems features broad multiprotocol support including new Amazon S3 support for modern applications relying on object storage. OneFSâs support for protocols including NFS, SMB, HDFS and now S3 allows customers to run large numbers of traditional and modern apps without compatibility concerns. âSo customers can read and write data simultaneously through NFS and S3 now. Theyâre not going to have to migrate data from one platform to another to leverage NFS on one and S3 on anotherâthey can leverage a single platform and make it easy to have file and object access at the same time, to the same file system, on the same platform,â said Dellâs Gordon. On the software front, PowerScale also includes Dellâs proactive health monitoring software, CloudIQ. The infrastructure monitoring and analytics software combines machine learning and human intelligence to provide customers with real-time performance and capacity analysis as well as historical tracking for a single view of their infrastructure. Partners can sell PowerScale through the pay-per-use Dell Technologies On Demand program that allows flexible payment options to buy storage capacity as needed. One of the major focuses for PowerScale was to create a low-cost entry solution with high bandwidth that would open new doors for channel partners at the edge, according to Scott Millard, senior vice president, specialty sales, global channel, alliances and OEM at Dell Technologies. âI really think this launch turns on a whole new market opportunity at the edge for all of their partners,â said Millard in an interview with CRN. âThe feedback from their partners has been, âWe need a lower capacity and a lower-cost entry point for scale-out NAS, especially to open up these edge opportunities. They also need to expand their cloud capabilities.â Those have been two things weâve heard strongly from the partners, and thatâs what weâve done with PowerScale.â For example, the new all-flash PowerScale F200 has a lower entry price point compared with competing storage vendors, he said. Dell has streamlined the special pricing process and channel sales incentives for the F200, as well as included built-in margin protection for partners versus direct and non-deal-registered partners. âThis is the next-level unstructured data storage solution made for the data era that they are now in,â said Millard. âWe feel like this is the new industry standard.â Dell EMCâs PowerScale OneFS 9.0, PowerScale nodes and DataIQ are now generally available globally. The updates are designed to help customers run artificial intelligence models more efficiently. Dell is also rolling out enhancements to other product lines, including the PowerEdge server portfolio, that likewise focus mainly on supporting AI use cases. PowerScale is a collection of NAS, or network-attached storage, systems optimized to hold unstructured data. The systems are powered by an operating system called OneFS. It mitigates the impact of hardware failures, detects ransomware and automates certain maintenance tasks for administrators. Dell is adding new all-flash systems to the PowerScale lineup that it says can carry out streaming data read and write operations up to twice as fast as earlier hardware. The new systems are based on the latest machines in the companyâs PowerEdge server portfolio. Dell says a new âsmart scale-out capabilityâ will enable companies to make more efficient use of the graphics cards attached to the servers in their PowerScale environments, which should Boost AI workloadsâ performance. The OneFS operating system that ships with PowerScale appliances is also receiving an AI-focused upgrade. According to Dell, the new release of the software will allow customers to more quickly train AI models, fine-tune them and perform inference, or the task of running neural networks in production. âStorage performance is a critical factor for successful AI and generative AI outcomes,â said Arthur Lewis, president of Dellâs infrastructure solutions group. âCustomers are relying on us to continually push the boundaries of storage innovation, including removing data access bottlenecks that limit the throughput and scalability of compute-intensive applications.â To expand the range of AI projects that PowerScale can support, Dell is validating the product portfolio for use in DGX SuperPOD environments. DGX SuperPOD is an offering from Nvidia that combines data storage hardware with the chipmakerâs GPU-equipped DGX appliances. Those appliances each include eight A100 or H100 graphics cards along with multiple switches, a large amount of memory and other supporting components. Dell expects that PowerScale will be the first Ethernet-based storage system series to earn a DGX SuperPOD certification. PowerScale systems use Ethernet-based network links to move data to and from customersâ DGX appliances. Competing storage appliances rely on other networking technologies, namely Nvidiaâs own Quantum-2 InfiniBand and Spectrum Ethernet. Dell is also enhancing the AI features of the PowerEdge server lineup its PowerScale systems use for computing tasks. The upgrade is rolling out for the PowerEdge XE9680, an AI-optimized machine that debuted last year. Itâs receiving support for the Instinct MI300X machine learning accelerator that Advanced Micro Devices Inc. launched on Wednesday. AMD claims the MI300X can outperform Nvidiaâs H100 HGX graphics card by 30%. The new accelerator comprises a dozen chiplets: Eight are GPUs based on a five-nanometer process, while the other four contain six-nanometer circuits that manage data input and output operations. There are also eight HBM3 memory modules for storing the information the MI300X processes. PowerScale is one of two storage product lineups for which Dell introduced enhancements today. The other is the APEX Storage portfolio, which is receiving new tools designed to ease the management of file-based data. Dell is rolling out a new service called APEX File Storage for Microsoft Azure that companies can use to manage data they keep in Microsoft Corp.âs public cloud. Databricks Inc. customers, meanwhile, are receiving a set of integrations that will become available in AWS and Azure. The integrations will make it easier to train AI models on data a company manages using APEX file storage software. Photo: WikipediaYour vote of support is important to us and it helps us keep the content FREE.One click below supports their mission to provide free, deep, and relevant content.
