There are two variations of the exam:
The American and Wyoming Government (3-credit) Challenge test fulfills the University of Wyoming’s 'V' requirement all by itself.
The Wyoming Government (1-credit) Challenge test fulfills only the Wyoming portion of that requirement. This option is best for students who have already earned credit for American government by taking an AP U.S. government test or taking an American government course at another college.
When in doubt, ask your adviser for their insight!
Absolutely! Community colleges, high schools, and the PTSB all send their students to us for the exam. The test is all-inclusive; you will do everything through the WyoLearn app.
No.
Once you enroll in the course and pay the fee, you are able to start the Challenge test at any time. This allows you to pick the most convenient time and location for you to take the it!
Once you enroll, you can take the test at your convenience and you will remain on the roster indefinitely.
Nope--the test setup eliminates the need for a proctor.
Once you have started your exam, you have 150 minutes to take the American and Wyoming Challenge test (150 questions) or 50 minutes to take the Wyoming Government Challenge test (50 questions).
You cannot log in/out or pause while taking the exam, so make sure you can dedicate enough time before starting the exam.
The American and Wyoming Challenge test is 150 multiple-choice questions.
The Wyoming Government Challenge test is 50 multiple-choice questions.
Students need to answer 70% of the questions correctly to pass either Challenge Exam.
Nope! Since the test is pass/fail it does not have any effect on your GPA.
Congrats! Now the School of Politics, Public Affairs, & International Studies (which administers the Challenge Exam) will report your success to UW’s Office of the Registrar - just like other grades are reported. This report is generated at the end of the month that you take the test and is sent straight to the Office of The Registrar to be reviewed and processed for your degree evaluation.
Exam scores are typically reported at the end of the month, and the Registrar could take up to a week to enter those scores. Look for your scores around the 15th of the following month. If they are still not showing up, reach out to the Office of The Registrar: registrar@uwyo.edu
We’re sorry to hear that! They ask that you take two steps, so they can move forward:
Click on the “Help” button on the left-hand side of your screen to contact the Student Canvas Support Hotline.
Contact us at sppais-chall@uwyo.edu so they can help get you set up with the right version of the Challenge Exam.
The Challenge test may be taken twice during a student's academic career. The sitting fee must be paid on each attempt. You will need to re-enroll in the Challenge test if you would like another attempt.
You can also sign up for a course such as POLS 1000: American and Wyoming Government to meet the University of Wyoming's USP-V requirement or POLS 1100: Wyoming Government (if you only need to satisfy the Wyoming component of the V requirement.)
If you like the idea of a structured class but also like the freedom of being able to dictate your own timeline of learning, you may be interested in exploring the option of registering for their "Self-Paced" version of the POLS 1000 class to fulfill your requirement (see below).
Sun, 12 Nov 2023 06:50:00 -0600entext/htmlhttps://www.uwyo.edu/pols/challenge-exam/index.htmlSeveral colleges are yet to complete odd-sem syllabusMangaluru: The odd semester at Mangalore University (MU) has concluded, with several colleges covering 70% or not finishing the syllabus. Some government colleges have managed to complete a maximum of 80% of the syllabus, according to sources. It is learnt that the colleges have written to MU to postpone semester examinations, scheduled on January 3, by a week.
The ongoing semester’s last working day was on December 16, and practical exams, currently underway, are expected to conclude by the end of this month. Jayakara Bhandary M, principal of Dr P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Pai Government First Grade College, Carstreet, said that almost all permanent faculties have completed the syllabus. However, the syllabus being taught by guest faculty remains incomplete since they joined 45 days after the commencement of the academic year. Also, they stopped teaching for more than a week as they went on an indefinite stir. However, permanent faculties who completed the syllabus early had chipped in to complete the syllabus of a few subjects that were taken up by guest faculty. Overall, their college has completed around 80% of the syllabus to date,” said Bhandary. Bhandary said that this progress was made possible by conducting special classes for a week after the last working day. The college has also formally written to Mangalore University, requesting a one-week postponement of the theory examinations. This extension would allow them to cover the entire syllabus thoroughly, ensuring students are well-prepared for the exams. A senior professor said that as per the feedback received from colleges, some colleges have completed less than 70% of the syllabus in a few subjects. Under MU, there are 480 guest lecturers out of 600 teaching staff. A syllabus completion rate below 90% is bound to impact the performance of candidates in the upcoming examination, said a history professor from a first-grade government college in Belthangady taluk. When contacted, Jayaraj Amin, vice-chancellor of MU, said, “Initially, the university had scheduled semester examinations from December 20 to January 17. In response to the request for postponement, the university has granted additional time for syllabus completion. Colleges should refrain from blaming MU for any incompletion of syllabus,” he said. The government on Thursday released draft legislation under its commitment to ensure the financial adviser test remains a pillar of the financial adviser professional standards.
The draft legislation includes amendments that will:
Remove the short answer questions from the test and increase the number of multiple-choice questions.
Remove the requirement that only provisional relevant providers and existing advisers can sit the exam.
These amendments concern principles 2 and 5 of the exam, as outlined in the Corporations Determination 2021.
The draft explanatory statement sets out that exams based on multiple choice questions “create efficiencies” by enabling computer marking to replace manual marking.
"This reduces the cost of administering exams and improves response times for test candidates to receive their results."
Regarding changes to principle 5, the explanatory material says that “current test eligibility criteria which restricts access to the test based on the person having already met the qualifications standard is causing unnecessary delays for new entrants seeking to enter the profession”.
“Removing this restriction provides flexibility for candidates to sit the test at an appropriate time. For example, potential new entrants could sit the test while they are completing their studies.
“This also improves timely access to the test by reducing bottlenecks and potential delays associated with conducting eligibility assessments for each test candidate prior to each exam."
The material highlights that all relevant providers are still required to meet the qualifications standard in addition to meeting the test standard in order to provide personal advice to retail clients.
“The minister has assessed that these amendments are necessary and desirable to ensure that relevant providers are adequately trained and competent to provide personal advice to retail clients in relation to relevant financial products,” the material states.
The government has invited interested parties to submit their views up until 10 January.

New YorkCNN —
Top federal regulators are warning for the first time that the use of artificial intelligence poses a risk to the financial system.
The Financial Stability Oversight Council, a team of leading regulators across the US government, formally classified AI on Thursday as an “emerging vulnerability.”
Sophisticated AI models have exploded in popularity in recent years, even as many prominent names within the field say the nascent technology could have disastrous effects if it grows out of control.
“AI has the potential to spur innovation and drive efficiency, but its use in financial services requires thoughtful implementation and supervision to manage potential risks,” FSOC warned in its annual report Thursday.
FSOC, created in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and led by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, cautioned that AI can “introduce certain risks,” including cybersecurity concerns, compliance risks and privacy issues.
Regulators also expressed concern about “complicating factors” related to generative AI models like ChatGPT.
For example, the council flagged data security, consumer protection and privacy risks posed by financial firms using generative AI. And they flagged that generative AI models can produce flawed results known as “hallucinations.”
Another worry for regulators is that some AI models operate as “black boxes” – meaning their inner workings are impenetrable to outsiders.
FSOC said this “lack of ‘explainability’ can make it difficult to assess the system’s conceptual soundness, increasing uncertainty about their suitability and reliability.”
In other words, if banks are relying on mysterious AI models, that makes it hard to understand how sturdy their underlying systems truly are.
Relatedly, regulators expressed concern about how these AI systems could “produce and possibly mask biased or inaccurate results.” That in turn would raise worries about fair lending and other consumer protection issues, FSOC said.
The move comes just two years after regulators first classified climate change as an “emerging threat to US financial stability.”
AI investment and adoption has boomed, even as some experts warn of serious dangers with the technology. President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to take steps to safeguard the development of AI, which is a booming area of adoption and investment.
“Errors and biases can become even more difficult to identify and correct as AI approaches increase in complexity, underscoring the need for vigilance by developers of the technology, the financial sector firms using it, and the regulators overseeing such firms,” FSOC said.
The popularity of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools, which use large language models to identify patterns in data and create text and images, has only accelerated the interest in AI.
