Answering consumers' questions

After their 2012 report, they got many questions. Two of the most common: "Are there any types of rice that are lower in arsenic?" and "Do other grains, such as quinoa, contain arsenic, too?" They now have the answers.

In addition to analyzing the FDA data on rice products, scientists at their Food Safety and Sustainability Center tested 128 samples of basmati, jasmine, and sushi rice for arsenic. They combined the data with the results of their 2012 tests and FDA data on arsenic in rice for a total of 697 samples of rice. They also looked at the inorganic arsenic levels in 114 samples of nonrice grains. (You can read the details of their testing in their full report.)

Nicer rices

Our latest tests determined that the inorganic arsenic content of rice varies greatly depending on the type of rice and where it was grown. White basmati rice from California, India, and Pakistan, and sushi rice from the U.S. on average has half of the inorganic-arsenic amount of most other types of rice.

Our findings led us to treat those specific rices from those areas differently from other types of rice and rices grown in other regions. Based on their data, they calculated that consumers could have about twice as many weekly servings as they previously recommended if that was the only rice or rice product someone ate. For adults, that adds up to 4½ servings per week; children could have 2¾ servings.

All types of rice (except sushi and quick cooking) with a label indicating that it's from Arkansas, Louisiana, or Texas or just from the U.S. had the highest levels of inorganic arsenic in their tests. For instance, white rices from California have 38 percent less inorganic arsenic than white rices from other parts of the country.

Brown rice has 80 percent more inorganic arsenic on average than white rice of the same type. Arsenic accumulates in the grain's outer layers, which are removed to make white rice. Brown has more nutrients, though, so you shouldn't switch entirely to white. Brown basmati from California, India, or Pakistan is the best choice; it has about a third less inorganic arsenic than other brown rices.

Rice that's grown organically takes up arsenic the same way conventional rice does, so don't rely on organic to have less arsenic.

Grains lower in arsenic

The gluten-free grains amaranth, buckwheat, millet, and polenta or grits had negligible levels of inorganic arsenic. Bulgur, barley, and farro, which contain gluten, also have very little arsenic. Quinoa (also gluten-free), had average inorganic arsenic levels comparable to those of other alternative grains. But some samples had quite a bit more. Though they were still much lower than any of the rices, those spikes illustrate the importance of varying the types of grains you eat.

Cooking to lower arsenic levels

You may be able to cut your exposure to inorganic arsenic in any type of rice by rinsing raw rice thoroughly before cooking, using a ratio of 6 cups water to 1 cup rice, and draining the excess water afterward. That is a traditional method of cooking rice in Asia. The modern technique of cooking rice in water that is entirely absorbed by the grains has been promoted because it allows rice to retain more of its vitamins and other nutrients. But even though you may sacrifice some of rice's nutritional value, research has shown that rinsing and using more water removes about 30 percent of the rice's inorganic arsenic content.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it is closely monitoring inspections of Boeing 737 MAX jets after the plane-maker requested that airlines check for loose bolts in the rudder control system.

Boeing recommended the inspections after an undisclosed international airline discovered a bolt with a missing nut while performing routine maintenance, the agency said Thursday. The company also discovered an additional undelivered aircraft with an improperly tightened nut.

"The issue identified on the particular airplane has been remedied," Boeing said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, they are recommending operators inspect their 737 Max airplanes and inform us of any findings."

Boeing says it has delivered more than 1,370 of the 737 Max jets globally. United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines are among the U.S. airlines with the aircraft in its fleets.

No in-service incidents have been attributed to lost or missing hardware, according to Boeing.

The company estimated that inspections — which it recommended should be completed within the next two weeks — would take about two hours per airplane. It added that it believed the airplanes could continue to fly safely.

The issue is the latest in a string of safety concerns that have dogged the plane.

In a span of five months between October 2018 and March 2019, two crashes on Boeing 737 Max aircraft killed 346 people. The Federal Aviation Administration subsequently grounded the plane for 20 months, and the disaster ultimately cost the company more than $20 billion.

Investigators found that both crashes were caused in part by a flawed automated flight control system called MCAS.

Richard Aboulafia, managing director of aerospace consulting firm Aerodynamic Advisory, says the loose bolts, and the need for inspections, are in a different category than the MCAS debacle.

"The latter was a design issue, rather than a manufacturing glitch," he told NPR.

"The problem here is relatively insignificant, but it does speak to continued serious problems with the production ramp, both at Boeing and with its suppliers."

The project, which runs throughout all of 2024, aims to Excellerate traffic safety for unprotected road users by developing new testing methods and technologies for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Titled "Significant Accident and Injury Reduction for Unprotected Road Users with New ADAS Methods and Technologies," the project seeks to develop new testing and verification methods for BlincVision and state-of-the-art ADAS systems for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) in time-critical accident scenarios.

The project includes six work packages to be carried out over the year 2024:

  1. Updating testing methods: Focuses on the obscured visibility of pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooters at higher speeds and new impact points based on field data.

  2. Development of L2 scenarios: Targets scenarios where cyclists or e-scooters suddenly swerve in front of a car.

  3. Prototype integration in test vehicle: Implements the BlincVision prototype system in a test car at Revere at Chalmers, with mounting of testing equipment and driving robot done by AstaZero.

  4. Verification tests: Tests BlincVision and a state-of-the-art ADAS system with the updated and new methods for validation and verification.

  5. Analysis and reporting: Compiles data and results from the tests.

  6. Final report: Produces a comprehensive report on the project's outcomes.

Biden administration takes first step toward writing key AI standards WASHINGTON: The Biden administration said on Tuesday it was taking the first step toward writing key standards and guidance for the safe deployment of generative artificial intelligence and how to test and safeguard systems.
The Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) said it was seeking public input by Feb. 2 for conducting key testing crucial to ensuring the safety of AI systems.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the effort was prompted by President Joe Biden's October executive order on AI and aimed at developing "industry standards around AI safety, security, and trust that will enable America to continue leading the world in the responsible development and use of this rapidly evolving technology."
The agency is developing guidelines for evaluating AI, facilitating development of standards and provide testing environments for evaluating AI systems. The request seeks input from AI companies and the public on generative AI risk management and reducing risks of AI-generated misinformation.
Generative AI - which can create text, photos and videos in response to open-ended prompts - in latest months has spurred excitement as well as fears it could make some jobs obsolete, upend elections and potentially overpower humans and catastrophic effects.
Biden's order directed agencies to set standards for that testing and address related chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cybersecurity risks.
NIST is working on setting guidelines for testing, including where so-called "red-teaming" would be most beneficial for AI risk assessment and management and setting best practices for doing so.
External red-teaming has been used for years in cybersecurity to identify new risks, with the term referring to U.S. Cold War simulations where the enemy was termed the "red team."
In August, the first-ever U.S. public assessment "red-teaming" event was held during a major cybersecurity conference and organized by AI Village, SeedAI, Humane Intelligence.
Thousands of participants tried to see if they "could make the systems produce undesirable outputs or otherwise fail, with the goal of better understanding the risks that these systems present," the White House said.

Biden’s Strategy Faces a Test as Israeli Forces Push Into Southern Gaza

Mr. Gordon was focusing on the day-after questions of what will happen in Gaza once Israel completes its war on Hamas. After meetings with Israeli officials, Mr. Gordon was scheduled to head to Ramallah on Wednesday to consult with leaders of the Palestinian Authority, which partially runs the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority resists Israeli settlements and compensates the families of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, including those held for violent attacks, but, unlike Hamas, recognizes Israel’s right to exist and has to an extent coordinated with Israeli security forces.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Netanyahu are at odds over the day-after question. While Mr. Biden agrees that Hamas must be removed from power in Gaza, he opposes an Israeli re-occupation of the coastal enclave. Instead, he favors what he calls a “revitalized” Palestinian Authority taking over Gaza as well. But Mr. Netanyahu has resisted that and on Tuesday said only Israel can ensure that Gaza will remain demilitarized after Hamas is destroyed. “I’m not ready to close my eyes and accept any other arrangement,” he said.

For all their differences, Biden administration officials argue that the president’s strategy has paid dividends. By keeping Israel close, they said, he has helped prevent Israel from widening the war by going after Hezbollah in Lebanon; forced Israel to reopen Gaza to humanitarian aid after initially vowing to block any food, water and other supplies; encouraged the now-expired pause in fighting that enabled the release of more than 100 hostages; and prompted Israel to take more steps to curtail civilian casualties.

Kelly Administration To Implement Weekend Traffic Slimming Test On Frazier; Speed Limit Cut To 25 MPH

The Kelly Administration, City Council Vice Chair Jenny Hill, and the Northshore Merchants Collective announced Monday that a new, temporary traffic calming demonstration project on Frazier Avenue will be in effect for the remaining weekends in December, beginning on Saturday.

Roadway demonstration projects are low-cost, short-term, temporary projects used to pilot long-term design solutions to Excellerate the safety of roads for all users, officials said.

The Kelly Administration is also instituting a new, permanent 25 mph speed limit on Frazier Avenue.

The city will place speed monitoring radar poles to deter speeding in the area and will increase police enforcement in the neighborhood.

The moves come after a speeding vehicle collided with another car, then spun up on the sidewalk at Frazier and Forest where a visiting family of three were standing. The wife and 22-month-old son were killed and the father was left in a coma.

Beginning Saturday, Chattanooga Public Works will set up traffic barrels to establish a weekend traffic pattern for Saturdays and Sundays throughout the balance of December. The traffic barrels will be removed for weekdays. The temporary traffic pattern will supply city engineers the ability to collect data to inform a permanent reconfiguration of Frazier Avenue, in line with previous reconfigurations on Central, Bailey and McCallie avenues, it was stated.

“Local government should be responsive to the concerns of its residents and effective in its response to the challenges in their community,” said Mayor Tim Kelly. “This tactical intervention, accompanied by enforcement, will allow us to Excellerate conditions on Frazier Ave on the remaining holiday weekends when pedestrian and cyclist traffic is at its peak and to analyze the effectiveness of an alternate design without impacting workday traffic patterns. This collaboration between my team, Vice Chair Hill, and the Northshore Merchants will help us quickly get to the best possible long-term solution.”

“Residents have spoken loud and clear about their concerns. This immediate action will slow cars down and make Frazier safer,” said Vice Chairwoman Hill. “Moving forward, they will focus on learning what solutions best meet all stakeholder needs so they can develop and implement a permanent solution. Titled "Significant Accident and Injury Reduction for Unprotected Road Users with New ADAS Methods and Technologies," the project seeks to develop new testing and verification methods for BlincVision and state-of-the-art ADAS systems for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) in time-critical accident scenarios.

The project includes six work packages to be carried out over the year 2024:

  1. Updating testing methods: Focuses on the obscured visibility of pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooters at higher speeds and new impact points based on field data.

  2. Development of L2 scenarios: Targets scenarios where cyclists or e-scooters suddenly swerve in front of a car.

  3. Prototype integration in test vehicle: Implements the BlincVision prototype system in a test car at Revere at Chalmers, with mounting of testing equipment and driving robot done by AstaZero.

  4. Verification tests: Tests BlincVision and a state-of-the-art ADAS system with the updated and new methods for validation and verification.

  5. Analysis and reporting: Compiles data and results from the tests.

  6. Final report: Produces a comprehensive report on the project's outcomes.
