The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification sets the standard for establishing Scrum theory, developing practical applications and rules, and leading teams and stakeholders through the development process.

CSM certification

Agile practices are being rapidly adopted in project and product management across many industries, and the ScrumMaster is an important leadership role in agile development to not only Excellerate workflow but increase your value as your career evolves. The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification, available through the Scrum Alliance, is an entry-level certification aimed at providing professionals with an awareness of the methodologies and values of Scrum, including team performance, accountability, and iterative progress. This certification is beneficial for people in product delivery who use the Scrum framework or those responsible for optimizing Scrum, including ScrumMasters and their teams.

Becoming a CSM offers individuals various valuable benefits, including increased recognition and credibility as a leader, additional opportunities within organizations with agile practices, leverage with future opportunities, and a demonstrated knowledge of Scrum principles.

CSM certification requirements

There are no prerequisites to enroll in CSM training but training is required to become certified. To earn a CSM credential, applicants must understand the Scrum framework and its principles and practices. The Scrum Alliance offers numerous resources on Scrum fundamentals, including the Scrum Alliance expert blog, member articles, videos, presentations, and reports.

Applicants must attend a CSM course, spread across two days in person or four online, taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer. The course provides a full overview of how to organize and support a Scrum team, and covers learning objectives including scope, Lean, agile, coaching, and service to the development team, product owner, and organization.

After completing the course, you have two opportunities within 90 days at no cost to pass the exam through the Scrum Alliance portal and become a Certified ScrumMaster. After up to two attempts within 90 days, however, there’s a $25 charge for each additional attempt. Once you pass the CSM exam, you must submit a license agreement for the Scrum Alliance to accept, as well as complete your Scrum Alliance membership profile.

CSM certification costs

The initial certification fee for each student who successfully completes a Certified ScrumMaster course is paid by the Certified Scrum Trainers. The training course fees, which range from $350 to $1,000, also cover the following:

  • The first two years of certification
  • Two attempts to take the exam (within 90 calendar days of attending the course)
  • Course materials provided by each instructor in class (must be Scrum Alliance approved)
  • The two-day course either online or in-person
  • Two-year membership to the Scrum Alliance community

CSM certification exam

The CSM exam consists of 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions in 60 minutes. You’ll need to correctly answer a minimum of 37 questions for a passing grade of 74%. The exam covers key Scrum elements, including general Scrum knowledge, Scrum roles, Scrum meetings, and Scrum artifacts. Applicants can only attempt the test twice without additional charge within the 90-day timeline of having completed the required two-day course. Otherwise, an additional $25 is required for each subsequent attempt.

CSM certification value

There are real benefits to getting CSM certified, not just for your organization but also on a personal level. The certification gives you a credential of demonstrable leadership value that goes beyond traditional project managers. Benefits also include improving team management, collaboration, and performance to ensure project work progresses seamlessly and efficiently. It also ensures Scrum is being applied correctly and consistently, and that everyone is aligned in their understanding of the framework. Plus, CSM certification provides a career-boosting benefit and opens up opportunities for professional growth.

It’s also about being part of a community. After completing all the steps and becoming a CSM, you’ll receive a two-year membership to the Scrum Alliance and can join local user groups and online social networks, as well as get access to discounts on gatherings, and more.

CSM certification renewal

Your CSM must be renewed every two years. Doing so requires a total of anywhere from 10 to 40 hours of Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and a renewal fee, which varies depending on the certification and SEUs required. Staying up to date requires staying current through SEUs. For every hour you spend on continuing education, you receive one SEU, and SEUs fall into four subcategories: events, learning, volunteering, and other independent means.

Eligible activities include the time you spend studying articles, volunteering, attending events, and taking courses. Examples of SEU options include watching a community webinar, giving back to the agile community through volunteer work, participating in a local user group, attending a global or regional Scrum gathering, and writing a blog post or studying a book about Scrum/agile. As an additional benefit, taking the CSM earns PMI-certified professionals Professional Development Units (PDUs).

CSM certification training

Applicants must attend a 16-hour CSM course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) prior to taking the CSM exam, either spread across two days in person or up to four online. CSTs are the only trainers approved by the Scrum Alliance to prepare you for the exam, and courses provided by CSTs are listed on the Scrum Alliance course search page. And even though live online options are available in addition to in-person training across the globe, self-paced online training is not available at this time.

CSM training should cover Scrum principles, the Scrum framework, definitions, how to run a Scrum project, how to work with teams, how Scrum fits into your organization, and the various roles involved with Scrum. By the end of your training you should be able to understand:

  • Foundations of Scrum and rules
  • How to act as a ScrumMaster for Scrum teams and stakeholders
  • Servant-leadership
  • How to effectively use Scrum
  • How to increase the effectiveness of Scrum at your organization

Once your training is complete, you can expect your instructor to assist with creating an account for you to access a CSM exam test site.

Sample CSM exam questions

To prepare for the CSM exam, there are many online practice tests with questions that might look similar to these on your exam including:

  • Tracking project impediments in a Scrum project is whose primary responsibility?
  • Which concept of the following is NOT defined in the Scrum framework?
  • Which of the following main events are defined in the Scrum framework?
  • Who is responsible for prioritizing the product backlog?

CSM certification salaries and jobs

Becoming a CSM can also provide a big boost to your annual salary. The range for ScrumMasters varies depending on title and location, but Glassdoor calculates an average of $128,000 and some roles can command as high as $165,000. Some such as Agile coach, Scrum trainer, Senior ScrumMaster, Agile Scrum coach, and Lead ScrumMaster are typical titles that can be expected, depending where you are on your career track.

Having achieved ScrumMaster certification opens up doors to more senior positions, and regardless of the role you choose, all indications point to a secure and stable future full of opportunities.

Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Master (CSM)

Companies today cannot afford to ideate, research, and develop a new product over a long period. The risk is that by the time the product is ready for launch, someone nimbler, faster, more agile, who is able to identify an opportunity and quickly bring a solution to life, has already taken the top spot in the market.

Below are several options for earning scrum master certification. Some of these credentials are entry-level, and others are geared toward experienced scrum professionals.

Certified ScrumMaster (CSM®)

The CSM designation is an entry-level certification administered by Scrum Alliance. This credential covers the foundational elements of the scrum framework and signifies that you have a solid understanding of scrum and agile methodologies and can lead scrum teams to achieve their goals effectively.

Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM®)

Also administered by the Scrum Alliance, the A-CSM certification serves those who have already completed their CSM and want to continue advancing their careers. This course provides in-depth training on increasing team accountability and scaling scrum and agile to multiple teams.

Certified Scrum Professional – ScrumMaster (CSP®-SM)

This course is administered by Scrum Alliance as well. It’s designed for experienced practitioners who want to build on their previous training and learn more about motivating their teams to Excellerate on scrum and agile methodologies. You must have A-CSM certification to be eligible for CSP-SM.

Best Scrum developer certifications

Best Scrum developer certifications

As big tech companies including Twitter and Facebook lay off thousands of programmers, the job market becomes increasingly competitive.

As such, developers who seek gainful employment and top-tier compensation must find ways to set themselves apart from the crowd. One of the ways to do that is to complement your education and work experience with certifications that are highly in demand and respected in the industry you’re in.

For Scrum developers who wish to find work on cross-functional and self-managed Agile teams, here are the top 5 Scrum developer certifications:

  1. Professional Scrum Developer Certification
  2. Certified Cloud Developer
  3. Certified Java Programmer
  4. Certified DevOps Engineer
  5. Certified Kubernetes Professional
Scrum Commitment and Values

A certified Scrum developer understands the importance of the five, core Scrum values.

Professional Scrum Developer Certification

Employers want developers that are immediately productive. They don’t want to waste time explaining software development processes and procedures to new hires.

When a Professional Scrum Developer Certification appears on a programmer’s resume, an employer knows that the application fully understands the following:

  • the intricacies of iterative and incremental development;
  • the importance of the product backlog;
  • what to do during the daily Scrum; and
  • how to participate on a cross-functional team.

Relatively few programmers are certified as Scrum developers. A developer this certification on their really stands out from the crowd.

Developer certifications in Scrum can be obtained by several organizations, but the premier designation comes from scrum.org.

Certified cloud developer

Modern software development happens in the cloud.

A productive software developer on a Scrum teams must know how to provision cloud-based resources, troubleshoot code in the cloud and overcome cloud-based security and firewall issues.

Employers know that the ability to develop and manage cloud-based applications is essential to modern-day businesses. A cloud developer certification on an applicant’s resume tells the hiring manager that you understand and can take full advantage of the benefits of cloud computing for a software development team.

All of the major cloud vendors offer a cloud developer certification. Cloud developer certifications from Google, Amazon and Oracle are all held in high regard.

Certified Java Programmer

Organizations expect a software developer on a Scrum team to know how to write code. Therefore, every Scrum developer should have a some type of a programming language certification on their resume.

For example, I like to see a Certified Java Programmer designation from Oracle on a resume, even if a company’s main language is Python or JavaScript.

A Java programmer certification proves a developer knows the following:

  • programming fundamentals
  • object-oriented concepts
  • functional programming
  • common design patterns

Industry-recognized certifications in other languages, such C# from Microsoft, also demonstrate to potential employers that you have a strong grasp of programming fundamentals.

Certified DevOps Engineer

Agile’s highest priority is the continuous delivery of software.

An Agile Scrum developer must understand the toolchain that enables continuous software delivery. DevOps certifications proves one’s knowledge of that toolchain.

The two most highly coveted DevOps certifications come from Amazon and Google. Both are considered ‘Professional’ designations, which means they go further in depth than introductory or associate certs.

Both the AWS and GCP certifications cover the same breadth of topics, including how to:

  • implement and manage continuous software delivery systems;
  • integrate with version control tools including Git and GitHub;
  • create resources with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform;
  • deploy monitoring, logging and metrics gathering systems; and
  • manage Docker- and Kubernetes-based deployments at scale.

A Scrum developer certified by Amazon or Google as a DevOps Engineer brings a qualification to the table that few other job applicants possess.

Agile and DevOps Differences

The DevOps infinity loop shows an iterative dev process often embraced by Agile teams.

Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

A Kubernetes certification is rare, but it’s definitely a plus.

A developer with strong knowledge of cloud-native computing, 12 factor app development and the limitations of Docker and Kubernetes will help streamline an organization’s microservices development and play a key role in its digital transformation efforts.

The CKAD designation is provided through the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, a highly respected open source organization in the cloud native computing space. Scrum developers with this certification have proof of competency in the following areas:

Scrum development teams that build cloud-native applications that are managed at runtime by Kubernetes will be well-served to have a Certified Kubernetes Application Developer.

Scrum developer certification benefits

In a competitive job market, it is important to stay ahead of your competition. With these five Scrum developer certifications on your resume, you will find your Agile development skills in great demand.

Scrum Master vs. Project Manager: Which One Is Right For You?

Editorial Note: They earn a commission from partner links on Forbes Advisor. Commissions do not affect their editors' opinions or evaluations.

Scrum masters and project managers can both be critical to the successful completion of a project. It’s not uncommon for scrum masters and project managers to work on projects together, but when you compare scrum master vs. project manager roles, there are clear differences.

Scrum master and project manager are both excellent career options. If you’re contemplating becoming a scrum master vs. project manager, make sure to keep a few things in mind. In this article, you’ll find information on how both roles are similar and how they differ.

What Is a Scrum Master?

A scrum master works with a scrum team to guide the teammates through creating large products in short cycles or iterations. This involves tackling tasks from a backlog of planned work, assessing each completed step and perfecting the work to reach set goals.

Scrum masters ensure that their scrum teams adhere to scrum principles to achieve the best results in product development.

Scrum Master Role and Responsibilities

Scrum masters work within the scrum framework, using agile methodologies to guide their teams toward specific goals. Below are a scrum master’s typical responsibilities.

  • Keep a scrum team on task and ensure team members produce high-quality work while following scrum principles. Have a thorough understanding of scrum principles and agile methodology as they pertain to product development.
  • Guide scrum teams as they work through sprint backlogs to reach each sprint’s goals.
  • Facilitate daily scrum meetings to assess the progress the team has made toward the set goals, and make adjustments if needed.
  • Maintain communication with product development teams to meet any challenges or problems head-on. Resolve any issues that could stall the product development process.

Requirements to Become a Scrum Master

To become a certified scrum master, you must go through training to learn scrum principles. Meeting scrum master certification requirements demonstrates that you are knowledgeable and have proven abilities as a scrum master.

A few organizations offer scrum master certification programs. While program requirements may differ, most require at least a two-day training course and a comprehensive exam. Some organizations offer the exam without the coursework, so if you choose this option, you must study on your own to prepare.

If you’re not sure if you want to commit to a certification program, look into organizations that offer free scrum training options online. In most cases, these are trial versions of a longer, paid training program. You may not earn an official certification through these shortened programs, but you can learn enough to help you determine whether a scrum master career is right for you.

Because different organizations administer different certifications, scrum master certification costs vary depending on which program you choose. Fees for scrum master certification programs typically run between $200 and $1,995. Most of these programs include exam fees in the cost of their programs.

Benefits of Working as a Scrum Master

Anyone can earn scrum certification and follow its principles, including engineers and project managers, but scrum masters carry additional responsibility.

Being a scrum master can be a rewarding career for you if you enjoy motivating and guiding teams through the product development process. A scrum master is a servant-leader role that comes with many benefits for those who become certified.

Excellent Earning Potential

The income difference between a scrum team member and a certified scrum master can be substantial. If you’re transitioning from a career as a scrum team member to one of a certified scrum master, you should see increased earning power.

Scrum masters earn about $113,000 per year, while those with certifications earn about $122,000.

Improved Résumé

Potential employers who see scrum master certification on your résumé will recognize that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a scrum master with any organization. This certification reflects your commitment to being a servant-leader for scrum teams as you guide them toward their goals.

Increased Career Opportunities

Becoming a certified scrum master makes you eligible for additional certifications. The coursework and exams you complete to earn scrum certification can help you build more in-depth knowledge of scrum and agile principles.

Additional certifications can help you qualify for higher-level, better-paying jobs working within the scrum framework.

What Is a Project Manager?

Successful project managers assume leadership roles, handling important logistical elements of a project. Essential project management skills include planning, organizing, scheduling and ensuring that a project is completed successfully and on time.

Project managers stick with a project through its lifecycle, from beginning to end.

Project Manager Role and Responsibilities

Project managers manage activities through a project’s entire lifecycle, including the initiation, planning, execution and closure phases. Their responsibilities include the following.

  • Handle the initial elements of a project, such as defining its scope and making plans for others working on the project to follow.
  • Determine the cost of a project and make sure it stays within the allotted budget. This may include reallocating resources in the event of unanticipated expenses.
  • Manage a project’s human resources, including interviewing and hiring team members and other staff.
  • Monitor the progress of a project. This includes troubleshooting any problems, assessing risks and handling any aspects that could affect the quality of the project.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to keep everyone informed about a project’s progress.

Requirements to Become a Project Manager

If you want to build a career as a project manager, you should plan to earn certification. There are several types of project management certifications, from entry-level credentials to those designed for seasoned professionals, and the requirements for each vary.

Common certifications include the Project Management Professional (PMP)® and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®.

PMP certification requirements entail at least a high school diploma, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree. CAPM certification requirements are similar. Depending on the credential, you might also need several years of project management education, plus experience working in project management or a related field. You must also pass an exam to become certified.

Benefits of Working as a Project Manager

More Job Opportunities

Earning a project manager certification qualifies you for high-paying jobs that are in high demand. In fact, PMPs in the U.S. earn 44% more than their noncertified counterparts, according to a salary survey from the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Certification also demonstrates that you have the education, knowledge and skills to effectively manage a variety of projects. Certification can qualify you for jobs that you may not be able to get otherwise.

Improved Skill Set

Earning a project management certification is not easy, so this undertaking says a lot about your abilities and skill level. Project management certification requires you to apply and master project management principles, methodologies and essential skills that can help you succeed as a project manager.

Greater Earning Potential

As a certified project manager, you can expect to earn around $40,000 more per year than project management certified who do not have certification. On a global level, PMPs earn median annual salaries that are 33% higher than those of their non-certified peers, according to PMI’s salary survey.

What Are the Similarities Between Scrum Master and Project Manager?

Scrum Masters and project managers both play important roles in project development. They are responsible for communicating with team members, developers and other stakeholders. They must be able to assess situations and adapt as they work with others to complete projects that align with previously established goals.

What Are the Differences Between Scrum Master and Project Manager?

Scrum Masters work within the Scrum framework by implementing Scrum principles. They ensure that each segment of a project is executed properly, and they make adaptations as necessary to reach set goals.

Project managers focus more on the logistical elements of a project’s lifecycle, including schedules, budgets, risk management and resource allocation. These professionals can work with any type of project, not only within the Scrum framework.

Which Role is Right for You?

Since Scrum Masters and project managers fill such different roles, there are many factors to consider as you determine whether you want to become a Scrum Master or project manager.

If you like the idea of guiding teams through individual increments of a project to reach a successful outcome, then a Scrum Master position might be the best option for you. If you prefer to manage a project’s logistical elements in their entirety—from the planning and implementation stages through completion—then working as a project manager may be a better fit for you.
