In order to become a patent attorney or patent agent it is necessary to take and pass the Patent Bar Examination. Only those individuals with scientific education are allowed to sit for the examination, and you do not need any legal training to take the exam. The easiest and more direct path to being able to demonstrate the qualifications necessary to sit for the exam is to have a bachelor’s degree in one the listed fields. If you have one of the degrees on the list you are said to qualify to sit for the exam under Category A and all you need to do is submit your application and transcript. If you do not have such a degree then you can still sit for the patent bar exam, but you need to demonstrate either enough credits of coursework (Category B) or generalized technical expertiese (Category C).
The applicant must establish to the satisfaction of the OED Director that he or she possesses scientific and technical training equivalent to that received at an accredited U.S. college or university for one of the listed degrees. To establish such equivalence to the satisfaction of the OED Director, an applicant can satisfy one of the following four options, other training, or other education listed below. For those who do not qualify as a result of having a bachelor’s degree in one of the above disciplines, the most common way of demonstrating the technical sophistication required is to resort to what is called Category B. Under Category B an applicant can qualify to sit for the patent bar examination through fulfillment of one of four options (see below).
Option 1:
24 semester hours in physics. Only physics courses for physics majors will be accepted.
Option 2:
32 semester hours in a combination consisting of the following:
8 semester hours of chemistry or 8 semester hours of physics, and
24 semester hours in biology, botany, microbiology, or molecular biology.
The 8 semester hours in chemistry or 8 semester hours of physics must be obtained in two sequential semesters, each semester including a lab. Only courses for science or engineering majors will be accepted. All acceptable coursework must be for science or engineering majors.
Option 3:
30 semester hours in chemistry. Only chemistry courses for chemistry majors will be accepted.
Option 4:
40 semester hours in a combination consisting of the following:
8 semester hours of chemistry or 8 semester hours of physics, and
32 semester hours of chemistry, physics, biology, botany, microbiology, molecular biology, or engineering.
The 8 semester hours of chemistry or 8 semester hours of physics must be obtained in two sequential semesters, each semester including a lab. Only courses for science or engineering majors will be accepted. All acceptable coursework must be for science or engineering majors.
Those who do not satisfy the bachelor’s degree requirement should consult the General Requirements Bulletin for a more detailed explanation of what courses may be counted.
Additionally, there is a Category C that will allow individuals to petition to sit for the exam based on practical experience, but in my experience qualifying under this section is virtually impossible (i.e., I have personally NEVER seen anyone fulfill the requirements of Category C no matter how brilliant and technically sophisticated). I have had individuals report that they have qualified to sit for the exam without any technical experience whatsoever by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE exam) in Michigan, but I have not independently Verified these claims.
Apparently, as the story goes, Michigan allow anyone to take the FE exam and the USPTO recognizes the FE exam under Category C. Typically those who qualify to take the FE exam do not need to rely on Category C, but rather either qualify under Category A or B. I have to openly wonder whether those who have no technical background whatsoever and pursue the FE exam in Michigan are doing themselves a disservice. Employers almost universally hire due to technological skill and knowledge, so someone without any science background who has passed the FE exam will likely find it exceptionally difficult to find a job. To be sure, in fields such as biology or chemistry it can even be difficult to find a first job without an advanced degree, such as a Master’s degree of PhD.
Regardless of the FE exam, what I do know is that there are those in the computer science field, with extraordinarily sophisticated job experience in highly technical fields, who cannot qualify under Category C. So it is my recommendation that Category C be pursued with eyes wide open regarding the relative likelihood that it will not succeed, and even if it is successful the substantial hurdles that one will face finding employment.
If you do not qualify to sit for the patent bar but are close in the number of credits you can always just take a few more science courses. I have known many who have done this. The Patent Office does not seem to care where the course work is completed, as long as the courses are completed.

Please note that with Computer Science degrees the school the degree is awarded by must be accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Commission (CSAC) of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB), or by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), on or before the date the degree was awarded. Computer science degrees that are accredited may be found on the Internet (http://www.abet.org).
An applicant with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the approved subjects must submit an official original transcript from the college or university. A diploma, copy of the diploma, or copy of the transcript will not be accepted. The official original transcript will be accepted from applicants. The college or university transcript must be official/original and include the university stamp or seal.
An applicant with a Bachelor’s degree in a subject not listed, such as Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, Mechanical Technology, or a Computer Science degree from an institution that was not accredited by the CSAC of the CSAB or by the CAC of ABET on or before the date the degree was awarded must establish to the satisfaction of the OED Director that he or she possesses the necessary scientific and technical training under either Category B or Category C.
Ironically, the Patent Office does not accept advanced degrees as per se evidence that the applicant has sufficient scientific training to presumptively qualify to sit for the Patent Bare Exam. Thus, an applicant who has a Master’s or higher level degree in one of the subject areas listed above, but does not have a Bachelor’s degree in such subject, must established to the satisfaction of the OED Director that he or she possesses the necessary scientific and technical training. Possession of the necessary scientific and technical training may be satisfactorily established in the manner set forth under either Category B or Category C.

Whether it’s GCSEs, National 5s or any other qualification, exam time can be unnerving for parents as well as those actually taking the papers. It’s natural for adults to worry when they see their teens grappling with mountains of notes and revision timetables.
But with a little bit of planning, there’s no need to panic. Sometimes getting hands on is the way to go, other times it’s about giving your student space - here are five ways mums, dads and carers can do their bit in the run-up to exam season.
No one wants exams dates to come as a surprise! It's a good idea for those taking exams to make a timetable that incorporates key dates.
As well as the exam dates themselves, students should work out how much time should be spent studying their subjects. Each should get its fair share of study time, but if there are weaker or stronger ones it may be OK to allocate time accordingly. It's helpful if the timetable is broken down into short, regular study periods - these are much better for retaining the information than one-off cramming sessions which last hours.
Any timetable worth its salt will definitely include breaks and treats! Brains and bodies need a rest - this will actually help to absorb all that information and rewards are a great way to create targets to work to.
Depending on the space available in your home, you could consider creating a special area where your child can focus on their studies in peace and quiet. If this isn’t an option, investigate accessing this at a local library or school.
If you want to make their bedroom into this quiet space, make sure it is rid of the many distractions that may be in there. Experts have found that an untidy work space can be detrimental to the study process, so it’s a great excuse to keep the area neat. But don’t be too harsh on your teen if it gets a little messy as that won’t help with any exam stress.
However much you want your child to do well, you’ve got to know when to leave them to it. Studying is important, but you don’t want them to feel extra stress by what they see as you ‘hassling’ them. supply them space to find their flow, let the revision seep in and don’t fire a barrage of questions at them over study progress.
Make sure they know you’re a ready shoulder if they need to talk or raise concerns. If your child does feel the strain right before an exam and happens to take it out on you, just bite your lip. You can deal with your feelings on another day, it’s best to let it go and allow them to focus on the exam.
We all need fuel to keep us going but during the revision periods it’s especially important to make sure your child is getting the right sort of food.
Snacks that contain plenty of Omega 3, such as oily fish, help with concentration. A good time to dish out the sardine sandwiches! Any food packed with antioxidants can also aid concentration - look for fruit, especially berries, to help out here.
Bananas are recommended too. They contain dopamine which can boost both motivation and concentration.

GCSE examinations in 2023 will mainly return to pre-pandemic arrangements, after several years of disruption due to Covid-19.
Dr Jo Saxton from Ofqual said "I can confirm that, in 2023, they will return to pre-pandemic grading as the next step in getting back to normal.
"But giving the 2023 cohort some protection against any impact of COVID-19 disruption is the right thing to do.
"Students in the 2023 cohort have not experienced national school and college closures during their 2-year courses of study, but they know they have experienced some disruption.
"That’s why we’re putting in place some protection for this cohort."
Return to full curriculum
Grade boundaries for 2023 examinations will be guided by the grades achieved by cohorts of students in pre-pandemic years, alongside prior attainment data. Dr Saxton said this "means the 2023 cohort will be protected in grading terms if their exam performance is a little lower than before the pandemic."
In May the Department for Education confirmed that there would be a return to full curriculum coverage in examinations for all GCSE subjects.
Advance information of exam content will no longer be provided, but students taking GCSE maths, physics and combined science will have formulae and equation sheets.
