Overview
ADatum Corporation develops a software as a service (SaaS) application named E-invoicing.
Existing Environment
Application Architecture
E-invoicing consists of a single-page application (SPA) and a backend web service that provides invoice management
and processing functionality.
E-invoicing stores all the details of each invoicing operation in a backend cloud database. E-invoicing generates
invoices in PDF format and provides users with the ability to obtain the PDF after it is generated. Each invoice has
a unique identifier named invoiceid.
The users have a common workflow where they sign in to E-invoicing, and then open E-invoicing in multiple tabs of
a web browser so they can use different parts of the application simultaneously.
Security Architecture
ADatum uses the principle of least privilege whenever possible. ADatum always uses the latest libraries and
integration endpoints.
Requirements
Business Goals
ADatum wants to integrate E-invoicing, Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), and Microsoft Graph so that their
customers can leverage Microsoft Office 365 services directly from within E-invoicing.
Planned Changes
ADatum plans to add the following capabilities to E-invoicing:
Email the generated invoices to customers on behalf of the current signed-in user. Any emails generated by the
system will contain the invoiced.
Perform as many operations as possible in the browser without having to leave the E-invoicing application.
Use Azure AD to manage identities, authentication, and authorization.
Display all emails that contain a specific invoiceid.
Technical Requirements
ADatum identifies the following technical requirements for the planned E-invoicing capabilities:
Ensure that all operations performed by E-invoicing against Office 365 are initiated by a user. Require that the user
authorize E-invoicing to access the Office 365 data the first time the application attempts to access Office 365 data on
the users behalf.
Send scheduled reminders to customers before a payment due date. Create an administration user interface to enable
the scheduled reminders.
Implement Microsoft Graph change notifications to detect emails from vendors that arrive in a designated mailbox.
Implement single sign-on (SSO) and minimize login prompts across browser tabs.
Secure access to the backend web service by using Azure AD.
Ensure that all solutions use secure coding practices.
Backend Security Planned Changes
ADatum wants to use custom application roles to map user functionality to permissions granted to users.
E-invoicing will have internal logic that will dynamically identify whether the user should be allowed to call the
backend API.
SSO JavaScript Script
You plan to implement SSO with Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) by using the following code:
Access Token JavaScript Script
You have the following JavaScript code to obtain an access token.
Change Notification JSON
You have the following JSON message that will be sent by the Microsoft Graph service to detect the vendor emails.
DRAG DROP
You need to implement the role functionality for the backend web service calls.
Which three actions should you perform in sequence? To answer, move the actions from the list of actions to the
answer area and arrange them in the correct order. Answer: Question: 51
How can you validate that the JSON notification message is sent from the Microsoft Graph service?
A. The ClientState must match the value provided when subscribing.
B. The user_guid must map to a user ID in the Azure AD tenant of the customer.
C. The tenant ID must match the tenant ID of the customers Office 365 tenant.
D. The subscription ID must match the Azure subscription used by ADatum. Answer: A
Explanation:
clientState specifies the value of the clientState property sent by the service in each notification. The maximum length
is 128 characters. The client can check that the notification came from the service by comparing the value of the
clientState property sent with the subscription with the value of the clientState property received with each
notification.
Note: A subscription allows a client app to receive notifications about changes to data in Microsoft Graph.
Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/graph/api/resources/subscription Question: 52
You are building email notifications for an expensing system.
When a user receives an email notification, the email will contain a comment field. When the user submits a comment,
the data will be returned to the expensing system for processing.
What should you do to implement the notification by using the minimum amount of development effort?
A. Create a Microsoft Office Add-in that has an action pane to display the notifications
B. Leverage Microsoft Graph notifications
C. Leverage the Azure SignalR Service and implement web notifications
D. Configure the expensing system to send actionable messages Answer: D
Explanation:
Whether you are filling out a survey, approving an expense report, or updating a CRM sales opportunity, Actionable
Messages enable you to take quick actions right from within Outlook. Developers can now embed actions in their
emails or notifications, elevating user engagement with their services and increasing organizational productivity.
Office 365 provides two solutions to enhance productivity with Outlook Actionable Messages: actionable messages via
email, and actionable messages via Office 365 Connectors.

B. a manifest file to the Teams folder in the solution
C. the TeamsTab value to the supportedHosts property in the manifest file
D. a manifest file to the webparts folder in the solution Answer: D
Explanation:
You need to update the web part manifest to make it available for Microsoft Teams. Locate the manifest json file for
the web part you want to make available to Teams and modify the supportedHosts properties to include "TeamsTab".
Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/dev/spfx/web-parts/get-started/using-web-part-as-msteams-tab Question: 54
Which URI should you use to query all the emails that relate to an invoice?
A. Option A
B. Option B
C. Option C
D. Option D Answer: A Question: 55
You are developing a Microsoft Teams application for a support staff.
Within a conversation between the support staff, you want the staff to look up support ticket IDs from a list
without opening the ticketing system.
Which feature should the application include?
A. a bot
B. a connector
C. a messaging extension
D. a tab Answer: C
Explanation:
Messaging extensions allow users to interact with your web service through buttons and forms in the Microsoft Teams
client. They can search, or initiate actions, in an external system from the compose message area, the command box, or
directly from a message. You can then send the results of that interaction back to the Microsoft Teams client, typically
in the form of a richly formatted card.

Microsoft has enhanced its code coverage tools, adding new features to Microsoft.CodeCoverage and introducing dotnet-coverage. The enhancements include fresh report formats that integrate smoothly with tools such as ReportGenerator.
Microsoft posted a bulletin about its enhanced code coverage tools on December 21. Both Microsoft.CodeCoverage and dotnet-coverage can run on any platform supported by .NET, due to the addition of static instrumentation. While the default remains the familiar coverage format, other report formats include Cobertura and XML. Cobertura is an open source XML format that can be opened in Visual Studio Enterprise or any text editor. Microsoftâs XML format also can be opened in Visual Studio Enterprise or a text editor.
Mirosoftâs new dotnet-coverage tool collects code coverage for console and web applications, merges coverage reports, instruments binaries, and calculates code coverage for each test separately. Running dotnet test --collect "Code Coverage" at the solution level automatically merges code coverage for all test projects (see a full example).
Microsoft also has improved documentation for code coverage at GitHub, while noting code coverage functionality is closed-source. Code coverage performance has been made faster as well. Microsoft has published a Get Started guide for collecting code coverage for a .NET test project.

Thu, 14 Dec 2023 10:00:00 -0600en-ustext/htmlhttps://www.thewindowsclub.com/best-free-internet-speed-test-apps-for-windowsMicrosoft to implement new feature to reinstall Windows without deleting any files or apps
Microsoft Corp. is reportedly integrating a built-in recovery system that will allow users to reinstall the Windows 11 operating system through Windows Update without losing their existing files.
The new feature was first spotted by Windows Latest today, and will be made available through a new setting called âFix problems using Windows Update.â
According to that report, the new setting can be found by heading to Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11. Itâs currently only available to members of the Windows Canary Channel, who get to test new features before they become more widely available.
Microsoft first mentioned the upcoming feature around six months ago in a blog post, but its implementation in public Windows 11 test versions suggests itâs almost ready for prime time.
The feature could be particularly useful for users that want to reinstall, update, or repair the OS without losing files, documents, pictures, videos or apps. âThis operation reinstalls the OS that you have and will not remove any files, settings, or apps,â the company said in the original blog post. âDevices may need to complete in progress updates prior to this process taking effect.â
Previously, the best way to reinstall or recover Windows 11 without losing any files was to use the âIn-Place Upgradeâ option within Microsoftâs Media Creation Tool. While both this and the newer option allow users to do the same thing, the In-Place Upgrade is known to be quite a lengthy process. With the new feature, the process of recovering Windows will be rapidly accelerated.
Windows Latest says the new features could be integrated within the Windows 11 Moment 5 Update thatâs expected to roll out in February 2024. That will be a cumulative update thatâs typically rolled out through the Windows Update feature, as previous âMomentâ updates were.
Itâs also expected to be the last minor update for Windows 11 ahead of a much bigger one thatâs slated to take place in 2025. Other new capabilities to come in the minor update include new quality-of-life features such as better support for digital pens, and the ability to make certain apps uninstallable, such as Microsoft Edge and Cortana.

Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland, Wash.-based company that tracks the developer's moves, put the Vista challenge at the top of its annual list.
Although demos of the still-in-the-works operating system boast cool graphics effects and consumer features, it's enterprises that Microsoft must persuade. "Windows is Microsoft's biggest business unit, and Vista is it's biggest challenge," said Rob Helm, director of research at Directions. "Frankly, I think it's going to be very difficult for Microsoft to make its case to corporations."
January and February of 2006 will be the months to watch, said Helm, since that's when Microsoft will lock down the feature set for Vista. "Then they can try to tell corporations why they need it."
He's not optimistic because of the years-long trend of shrinking deferred revenues received from long-term licensing programs, such as Software Assurance, which gives customers the right to all upgrades during a two- or three-year span. Lower revenues there means that fewer companies are buying into Software Assurance, perhaps because they're balking at upgrading operating systems.
"The Windows Client division has to tell corporate customers why they want Windows Vista, and why they shouldn't wait until they buy new hardware," said Helm.
Among the remaining challenges in Directions' Top 10 list, Helm singled out the latest refresh of an online strategy as least likely to show major results in 2006, and the Redmond, Wash.-based giant's new game console, the Xbox 360, as most likely to meet its challenge during the year.
"Microsoft's in a bit of disarray," said Helm when talking about the company's online strategy. "They're trying to focus on Google, and come up with things to take away from Google. I don't think we'll see any huge concrete results here in 2006." On the Xbox 360 front, however, the picture is rosier. "They got it out when they said they would, so I'm the most optimistic about this. But in part, it's there to protect the platform, so in the end, it will be more about beating Sony than laying any groundwork for profitability."
One additional challenge, which Directions described as taking a lead in application security and reliability, was highlighted by Helm.
"This is the one people were most passionate about," he said in characterizing the sometimes contentious discussions at the research firm about where to rank the problems that Microsoft faces in 2006.
Microsoft has rarely has the discipline to enforce development guidelines to ensure secure and reliable Windows applications, even with its own software, Helm said. "Microsoft always talks about what an effective ecosystem the Windows platform has, but that platform still needs leadership to make sure application security and reliability are important.
"It's dawning on Microsoft that it will have to get tougher with developers because they're looking at how Apple does things. Apple has always been more proscriptive when it comes to developers.
"It's not going to be easy, but Microsoft does have some leverage," said Helm. "And it's timely because of Vista. It's a good opportunity to change the developer culture.
"If they miss this one, the next opportunity won't come for two or three years."

In a blog post earlier this week, Microsoft developer Yochay Kiriaty said Microsoft will let attendees of next month's TechEd 2009 conference test their applications for compatibility with Windows 7 free of charge.
At TechEd, to be held from May 11 to 15 in Los Angeles, Microsoft will set up a Windows 7 'Bring Your Own Apps' lab that includes a secure Windows 7 test platform for developers to test and debug their applications, Kiriaty said in the blog post.
"Just bring your applications and they will load them on the test platform, and their dedicated consultants will help you investigate any application compatibility issues and offer architectural guidance," Kiriaty said.
It's another example of how Microsoft has painstakingly sought to avoid the application compatibility issues that plagued Windows Vista and led to what Microsoft still feels is an unfair negative bias in the market against Vista.
Microsoft has avoided specific statements on Windows 7 and said only that it plans to launch Windows 7 in late 2009 or early 2010. In Microsoft's third-quarter earnings call, company officials refined that somewhat and said plans are to launch Windows 7 in Microsoft's 2010 fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30, 2010.
However, the Windows 7 Release Candidate looks to be just about ready. Microsoft earlier this month indicated on its partner portal that the Windows 7 RC will be publicly released on May 5, and in March posted information on TechNet that suggested a May release. On both occasions the information was quickly removed and replaced with the Windows 7 beta page.
On Thursday, the Microsoft blog Neowin reported that Microsoft has finished work on Windows 7 build 7100 and will offer it as the official Windows 7 Release Candidate. On Friday, Neowin reported that Windows 7 build 7100 had begun circulating on Torrent sites.
Many Microsoft watchers believe the company will hold off on unveiling the Windows 7 Release Candidate until May 15, the final day of TechEd, so as to generate the maximum amount of anticipation from its tester community.
Sun, 10 Dec 2023 22:35:00 -0600text/htmlhttps://www.crn.com/news/applications-os/217100325/next-windows-7-release-almost-ready-for-close-upMicrosoft.CodeCoverage v17.8 Released with New dotnet-coverage Tool and Other Improvements
Microsoft recently announced an upgraded version of its developer tools, version 17.8.0, introducing significant improvements to Microsoft.CodeCoverage tools. Notably, the update includes the introduction of the dotnet-coverage tool. Additional enhancements comprise new report formats, an auto-merge tool, performance upgrades, and improved documentation.
A notable addition to the set of tools is dotnet-coverage, which carries various roles, including collecting code coverage for console and web applications, merging coverage reports, instrumenting binaries, and calculating code coverage for individual tests. This new tool significantly contributes to a more complete and efficient code coverage analysis of Microsoft.CodeCoverage.
One notable improvement is the expanded platform compatibility of the tools, achieved through the incorporation of static instrumentation. Regarding that, Microsoft's code coverage tools initially relied on dynamic instrumentation for the Windows platform.
Later versions introduced static code coverage collection, pre-instrumenting libraries on disk for universal .NET platform support. Dynamic instrumentation remains the default, but on non-Windows systems, static is activated, avoiding redundant dynamic instrumentation. Developers control the method through configuration flags.
Furthermore, the code coverage report formats have experienced a comprehensive overhaul to integrate with auxiliary tools such as ReportGenerator. While the default .coverage format remains unchanged, several new formats have been introduced, including Binary (Default) in .coverage format for Visual Studio Enterprise, Cobertura in .cobertura.xml format compatible with Visual Studio Enterprise and text editors, and XML in .xml format for use with Visual Studio Enterprise and other text editors.
A new feature introduced in this update is Auto-Merge for solutions. Executing the command dotnet test --collect 'Code Coverage'Â at the solution level now automatically consolidates code coverage data from all associated test projects. This process simplifies the management of code coverage across complex solutions.
Addressing a performance concern before the 16.5 release, there has been a notable improvement in the efficiency of code coverage report collection. Previously, this process substantially restrained test execution speed.
With the identified issue rectified, developers can now benefit from an impressive 80% increase in performance, making the code coverage analysis more efficient and less intrusive. The readers can take a look at benchmark results which are available at the official announcement post.
To get started with the most accurate features and optimise build processes, developers need to incorporate the latest stable packages into test projects.
With the note that solutions without C++ code, developers can enhance speed and reliability by deactivating native code coverage using the specified flags in the runsettings configuration.
Lastly, the latest documentation improvements can be found in the updated GitHub repository. The repository provides users with a comprehensive information resource and samples for an improved documentation experience.
Sat, 30 Dec 2023 06:04:00 -0600entext/htmlhttps://www.infoq.com/news/2023/12/microsoft-code-coverage-17-8/I used Microsoftâs Copilot app to generate AI images â hereâs how it works
Microsoft quietly dropped new Copilot apps over the holiday for both iPhone and Android.
Copilot puts the Bing chat interface into a standalone app, offering a free version of OpenAIâs GPT-4 normally only available with a paid ChatGPT subscription.
There are a number of hidden features within the AI app that you essentially have to ask for including music creation, storytelling and integration with the image generator DALL-E 3.
DALL-E 3 was launched last year by OpenAI and unlike other image generation models, where you craft a prompt and hope for the best, this lets you chat through the idea with Copilot first.
I tried it out, and here's how it went.
To test it out I decided to set myself a theme â a cat in a box. This is something Iâve used a few times in testing AI image generators as you can build on it and add additional elements. Here is how to make Copilot create an image.
The first step is to get the app from the Play or App Store. Once it is on your device youâll need to sign in to a Windows account to get access to the image creation capabilities of the chatbot. You can converse with Copilot without signing in, but then you donât get GPT-4 or DALL-E support.
To sign in click the circular person icon in the top left corner of the screen. This will open a settings menu where you can sign in to your Microsoft account.
You can generate images without enabling GPT-4 but since it's currently free to use and leads to more creative output, with a better understanding of your prompt, it's worth enabling. To do so just toggle the GPT-4 switch.
To start generating an image you just type in the text box what you want to see. You may also see a microphone icon, in which case you just tell it what you want.
I asked Copilot â which still thinks it is called Bing Chat â to create an image of a cartoon cat in a box playing with yarn.
It will generate four images, each a slightly different take on the main image. To view any image just click on the picture and it will make it bigger.
One of the features of DALL-E 3, the image generator powering Copilot, is the ability to place legible text on an image. I asked it to turn the image into a logo for a company called âCat in a Boxâ. It gave me an hourglass image while it took its time generating my request.
7. A fun logo for a yarn company comes back from Copilot
It gave me four options. Three of them had legible Cat in the Box text but only one actually looked good enough to be usable. To obtain the image click the picture, then just click the three dots next to the share button.
While technically saving it as simple as tapping the three dots, there are a couple of additional steps to actually get it in your photo library or files. After touching the dots it will open the obtain menu.
Click the obtain button, which will open it in a view on its own. Simply long-press and tap âSave to Photosâ on iOS. On Android long-press and tap âDownload imageâ.
Now they have a cat concept I decided to make a photorealistic version and have the AI put it on the moon. Doing this is as simple as asking the chatbot. It responds to natural language text and can refine ideas based on feedback.
As they had a cat that traveled to space I decided it should be celebrated. This was another chance to test DALL-Eâs text generation capabilities. I asked Copilot to create a box of cereal called AstroCat Bix with the face of their space cat on the box. It did a great job.
In a final test of its text capabilities I asked Copilot to make a magazine advertisement and a billboard for AstroCat Bix. While the cat and branding werenât completely consistent, it did a great job from a simple prompt.
To achieve something similar be as descriptive as you can with the chatbot. Ensure your prompts explain what you want and place words you want it to include in double-quotes.

The boom in artificial intelligence tools that draw on troves of content from across the internet has begun to test the bounds of copyright law.
Authors and a leading photo agency have brought suit over the past year, contending that their intellectual property was illegally used to train A.I. systems, which can produce humanlike prose and power applications like chatbots.
Now they have been joined in the spotlight by the news industry. The New York Times filed a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing OpenAI and Microsoft of copyright infringement, the first such challenge by a major American news organization over the use of artificial intelligence.
The lawsuit contends that OpenAIâs ChatGPT and Microsoftâs Bing Chat can produce content nearly identical to Times articles, allowing the companies to âfree-ride on The Timesâs massive investment in its journalism by using it to build substitutive products without permission or payment.â
OpenAI and Microsoft have not had an opportunity to respond in court. But after the lawsuit was filed, those companies noted that they were in discussions with a number of news organizations on using their content â and, in the case of OpenAI, had begun to sign deals.
Without such agreements, the limits may be worked out in the courts, with significant repercussions. Data is crucial to developing generative A.I. technologies â which can generate text, images and other media on their own â and to the business models of companies doing that work.
âCopyright will be one of the key points that shapes the generative A.I. industry,â said Fred Havemeyer, an analyst at the financial research firm Macquarie.
A central consideration is the âfair useâ doctrine in intellectual property law, which allows creators to build upon copyrighted work. Among other factors, defendants in copyright cases need to prove that they transformed the content substantially and are not competing in the same market as a substitute for the work of the original creator.
A review quoting passages from a book, for example, could be considered fair use because it builds on that content to create new, unique work. Selling extended excerpts from the book, on the other hand, may violate the doctrine.
Courts have not weighed in on how those standards apply to A.I. tools.
âThere isnât a clear answer to whether or not in the United States that is copyright infringement or whether itâs fair use,â said Ryan Abbott, a lawyer at Brown Neri Smith & Khan who handles intellectual property cases. âIn the meantime, they have lots of lawsuits moving forward with potentially billions of dollars at stake.â
It could be a while before the industry gets definitive answers.
The lawsuits posing these questions are in early stages of litigation. If they donât produce settlements (as most litigation does), it could be years until a Federal District Court rules on the matter. Those rulings would probably be appealed, and appellate decisions could vary by circuit, which could potentially elevate the question to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Getting there could take about a decade, Mr. Abbott said. âA decade is an eternity in the market that weâre currently living through,â he said.
The Times said in its suit that it had been in talks with Microsoft and OpenAI about terms for resolving the dispute, possibly including a license. The Associated Press and Axel Springer, the German owner of outlets like Politico and Business Insider, have recently reached data licensing agreementswith OpenAI.
Taking cases to trial could answer vital questions about what copyrighted data A.I. developers are able to use and how. But it could also simply serve as leverage for a plaintiff to secure a more favorable licensing deal through a settlement.
âUltimately, whether or not this lawsuit ends up shaping copyright law will be determined by whether the suit is really about the future of fair use and copyright, or whether itâs a salvo in a negotiation,â Jane Ginsburg, a professor at Columbia Law School, said of the lawsuit by The Times.
How the legal landscape unfolds could shape the nascent yet heavily capitalized A.I. industry.
Some A.I. companies have been flooded with venture capital in the past year after the public rollout of ChatGPT went viral. A stock plan under consideration could value OpenAI at over $80 billion; Microsoft has invested $13 billion in the company and has incorporated its technology into its own products. But questions about the use of intellectual property to train models have been top of mind for investors, Mr. Havemeyer said.
Competition in the A.I. field may boil down to data haves and have-nots.
Companies with the rights to large quantities of data, such as Adobe and Bloomberg â or that have amassed their own data, such as Meta and Google â have started developing their own A.I. tools. Mr. Havemeyer noted that an established company like Microsoft was well equipped to secure data licensing agreements and tackle legal challenges. But start-ups with less capital may have a harder time obtaining the data they need to compete.
âGenerative A.I. begins and ends with data,â Mr. Havemeyer said.
Benjamin Mullin contributed reporting.

Antivirus software is a necessary tool in todayâs online world. Attacks are only becoming more sophisticated, especially with the continued rise of AI. Even the most tech-savvy and cautious among us can drop their guard at wrong time or get tricked into exposing themselves to a malware, spyware, or ransomware vulnerability. Antivirus protection is an essential backup against such threats.Â
Weâre not suggesting that PC security software is fool-proof, but it does a great job of protecting your computer against harmful malware and ransomware. Most systems come with security software baked into the OS, but this is often the bare minimum you need. Choosing to purchase more robust antivirus software will provide you with features such as an advanced firewall, sandbox environments for suspicious programs, and multi-device protection, among other things.
How do you choose a good antivirus? Weâve tested a multitude of offerings, including all the big names, so you donât have to! When testing antivirus software, they look for products that strike a balance between excellent protection, a worthwhile selection of features, and minimal performance impact on your PC. For more information, you can read about how they test antivirus software below their picks.Â
Updated 12/21/23: Just in time for the new year, weâve got three new reviews. Even after their completely fresh looks at Norton 360 Deluxe and AVG Internet Security, theyâve kept their spots among their top picks. They also examined McAfee+ Ultimate, and while it packs in an intense number of features, its lack of polish sadly holds it back.

All of the deluxe antivirus suites offer extra tools as part of their package, but if they had to pick one that stands out in this respect, itâd be Panda Dome Complete. It has the usual PC maintenance utilities such as a disk defragmenter for hard drives and a startup apps manager. But it also has a VPN, Wi-Fi network scanning, a process monitor, a virtual keyboard, an application control feature, and more.
It also makes it very easy to find everything since it uses a tiled interface on a single screen, and the protection is good too. Granted, youâll pay more for Panda Dome Complete than some other worthwhile antivirus programs, but it offers lots of value for power users.
Tends toward false positives, especially with SmartScreen
Lacks the advanced features found in third-party products
Price When Reviewed:Included with Windows 10 and 11
If Windows is already working, why add anything else? If its built-in security suite, Windows Security, performs on par with the best of the free antivirus optionsâas they discovered in our roundup of the best free antivirusâwhy add the extra baggage of a third-party program? Sure, other antivirus programs might offer marginally better protection, but not enough to outweigh the convenience of rolling with Microsoftâs home-grown offering. Windows Security also has ransomware protection, which many free options donât. Plus, you avoid the nuisance of a third-party suiteâs regular upgrade notifications. To learn more, see their video on How to use Windows Security.
However, if youâre looking for more features, such as online privacy tools, a VPN, or encrypted cloud backup, you may want to use a third-party program instead, as these are not currently available in Windows Security. Nonetheless, itâs a free program that already comes preinstalled with Windows machines and it does a good job of keeping you protected from most threats.
Intego Mac Internet Security X9 â Best Mac antivirus
Pros
Two-way firewall
Good performance
Cons
Mac-specific (no Windows / Android protection)
Price When Reviewed:$24.99 for the first year, then $49.99 per year, 1 Mac
As the headline reveals, the focus of this roundup is the best antivirus for Windows PCs, but many PC enthusiasts are the de facto IT for friends and family. If you want to help an associate or loved one achieve strong antivirus protection for an Apple machine, their colleagues at Macworld recommend Integoâs Mac Internet Security X9. The suite combines VirusBarrier with NetBarrier to create a pair of utilities designed to catch and kill malware threats, and spot potential intrusion attempts from outside as well as outgoing attempts from rogue software. Together these tools offer a high level of protection against direct and indirect unwanted software and malware threats.
In Macworldâs testing, Intego VirusBarrier caught all their malware and âuninvited softwareâ samples, including ones for other platforms. They were also warned when they opened a disk image with a malicious installer.
The tool offers good compatibility with macOS, and unlike some of the competitors, it looks like a real Mac program.
What to look for in an antivirus suite
There are three basic requirements that an antivirus suite should meet:
High-detection rate for malware and other threats
Low impact on system resources
An easy-to-use interface
Thatâs not all to consider, however. These days, many security suites come with extras such as a backup service for your most essential files, Android and iOS apps for mobile security, a more advanced firewall, family protection (read: child restriction) features, and the right to use the program on multiple PCs. Access to a VPN and a password manager have become more common, too. Whether you need those extras depends on your personal situation.
How they test
First, they take a look at the interface to determine how easy or complicated it is. Does the interface make it easy to get at essential tools like PC scans and password managers, for example, or is everything buried under multiple clicks? Are there elements that look like they should be clickable but arenât? Are alerts interactive or purely informational, and do they make sense in context?
We also examine the features on offer. Every good antivirus suite should have the basics like scanning and real-time protection, but many vendors offer elements that go beyond basic security like password managers or firewalls. They try to discern whether any of these extra features are particularly useful, or just frills that look nice but donât serve a practical purpose.
To test the suiteâs demand on system resources, they run three benchmarks. The first is PCMark 10âs Extended test, which simulates a variety of workloads including editing spreadsheets, browsing the web, running video chat, and light gaming.Â
PCWorld
We run the benchmark before the security suite is installed. Then they install the software, have it run a full scan on their Windows 10 test machine, and start a second run of the benchmark at the same time. Then they compare the overall scores to see if the decline between the two benchmark runs is significant.
We repeat the same process using UL Procyon, which simulates document editing in Microsoft Office appsâe.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Then, as the harshest stress test, they use Handbrake to transcode a video before and after installing the antivirus software. On many home PCs, this encoding task utilizes 100 percent of the CPU. They then compare transcoding times to see if thereâs any significant decline.
Our test machine is an Acer Aspire 3 15 with an AMD Ryzen 5 7520U, 8GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Each security suite is tested on a clean install of Windows 10 Home.
As for the antivirus suiteâs detection capabilities, weâll rely on the opinions of security researchers dedicated to this task. They take into consideration reports from outlets such as A-V Comparatives, A-V Test, and SE Labs.Â
Weâll also take pricing into account and what you get for it.Â
Whenever possible weâll review security suites using a free trial to get a sense of what consumers see when they first try out a new product.
FAQ
1.
Will antivirus software slow down my computer?
The short answer is maybe, but probably not. Antivirus software scans files and programs to ensure there is no malware or other harmful threat present. The longer the time frame between each scan, the more files the program will need to check. These intensive scans may have some noticeable effect on your computer speed. Itâs therefore recommended that you schedule your scans to run more frequently and/or at night so as to not impact your computer usage.
While antivirus software can affect the speed of your computer, it is most likely not the only factorâor even the most prominent. Other factors such as unnecessary startup and background programs, insufficient RAM, or even undiagnosed malware can have more drastic effects on your computer speed than a simple antivirus scan.
2.
Should you pay for antivirus?
It depends on what antivirus features are most important to you. Do you just need a program that will scan, detect, and remove malware? Then go with a free version. But if you are looking for more advanced features such as the ability to block webcam hacking, run suspicious apps in a sandbox environment, and permanently delete sensitive files, then you should seriously consider upgrading to a paid premium antivirus service.Â
Overall, premium antivirus software is better suited to more complete coverage against threatsâespecially for inexperienced users. Children and seniors are particularly vulnerable to modern threats and therefore paid antivirus apps, which allow for multiple-device protection, may be a better option for families.
3.
What should I do if my antivirus detects a threat?
In a perfect world, your antivirus software will halt and clean the infected files for you. However, this largely depends on which antivirus program you are using.
In general, the antivirus will send a warning to you and try to quarantine the infected file in order to keep it from spreading. Once isolated, the software will give you the option to try to remove the infection or delete the file altogether.
4.
What is the difference between a full scan and a quick scan?
A full scan performs a comprehensive and thorough check of your whole system. It usually checks your system memory, startup programs, system backup, email databases, hard drives, and any removable storage drives.
A quick scan only checks a few areas including startup programs, system memory, and boot sectors. It may not detect all malware, but it can usually give you an idea if your computer has a virus.
As to when you should do either, they recommend a full scan once per week, during computer usage downtime (such as late at night). A quick scan can be done anytime you like, but itâs usually only necessary if you notice suspicious activity on your PC.
5.
Do I need to update my antivirus software?
Absolutely! Keeping your antivirus software up-to-date is crucial in helping you to avoid the most accurate threats.
That being said, most antivirus software todayâwhether free or paidâwill default to automatic updates. This way you donât need to worry about manually updating your software. It may still be worth checking to confirm that your antivirus is running the most up-to-date version from time to time.
