Hortonworks HDPCD Hortonworks Data Platform Certified Developer https://killexams.com/pass4sure/exam-detail/HDPCD Question: 97 You write MapReduce job to process 100 files in HDFS. Your MapReduce algorithm uses TextInputFormat: the mapper applies a regular expression over input values and emits key- values pairs with the key consisting of the matching text, and the value containing the filename and byte offset. Determine the difference between setting the number of reduces to one and settings the number of reducers to zero. A. There is no difference in output between the two settings. B. With zero reducers, no reducer runs and the job throws an exception. With one reducer, instances of matching patterns are stored in a single file on HDFS. C. With zero reducers, all instances of matching patterns are gathered together in one file on HDFS. With one reducer, instances of matching patterns are stored in multiple files on HDFS. D. With zero reducers, instances of matching patterns are stored in multiple files on HDFS. With one reducer, all instances of matching patterns are gathered together in one file on HDFS. Answer: D Explanation: * It is legal to set the number of reduce-tasks to zero if no reduction is desired. In this case the outputs of the map-tasks go directly to the FileSystem, into the output path set by setOutputPath(Path). The framework does not sort the map-outputs before writing them out to the FileSystem. * Often, you may want to process input data using a map function only. To do this, simply set mapreduce.job.reduces to zero. The MapReduce framework will not create any reducer tasks. Rather, the outputs of the mapper tasks will be the final output of the job. Note: Reduce In this phase the reduce(WritableComparable, Iterator, OutputCollector, Reporter) method is called for each The output of the reduce task is typically written to the FileSystem via OutputCollector.collect(WritableComparable, Writable). Applications can use the Reporter to report progress, set application-level status messages and update Counters, or just indicate that they are alive. The output of the Reducer is not sorted. Question: 98 Indentify the utility that allows you to create and run MapReduce jobs with any executable or script as the mapper and/or the reducer? 51 A. Oozie B. Sqoop C. Flume D. Hadoop Streaming E. mapred Answer: D Explanation: Hadoop streaming is a utility that comes with the Hadoop distribution. The utility allows you to create and run Map/Reduce jobs with any executable or script as the mapper and/or the reducer. Reference: http://hadoop.apache.org/common/docs/r0.20.1/streaming.html (Hadoop Streaming, second sentence) Question: 99 Which one of the following statements is true about a Hive-managed table? A. Records can only be added to the table using the Hive INSERT command. B. When the table is dropped, the underlying folder in HDFS is deleted. C. Hive dynamically defines the schema of the table based on the FROM clause of a SELECT query. D. Hive dynamically defines the schema of the table based on the format of the underlying data. Answer: B Question: 100 You need to move a file titled weblogs into HDFS. When you try to copy the file, you cant. You know you have ample space on your DataNodes. Which action should you take to relieve this situation and store more files in HDFS? A. Increase the block size on all current files in HDFS. B. Increase the block size on your remaining files. C. Decrease the block size on your remaining files. D. Increase the amount of memory for the NameNode. E. Increase the number of disks (or size) for the NameNode. 52 F. Decrease the block size on all current files in HDFS. Answer: C Question: 101 Which process describes the lifecycle of a Mapper? A. The JobTracker calls the TaskTrackers configure () method, then its map () method and finally its close () method. B. The TaskTracker spawns a new Mapper to process all records in a single input split. C. The TaskTracker spawns a new Mapper to process each key-value pair. D. The JobTracker spawns a new Mapper to process all records in a single file. Answer: B Explanation: For each map instance that runs, the TaskTracker creates a new instance of your mapper. Note: * The Mapper is responsible for processing Key/Value pairs obtained from the InputFormat. The mapper may perform a number of Extraction and Transformation functions on the Key/Value pair before ultimately outputting none, one or many Key/Value pairs of the same, or different Key/Value type. * With the new Hadoop API, mappers extend the org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.Mapper class. This class defines an 'Identity' map function by default - every input Key/Value pair obtained from the InputFormat is written out. Examining the run() method, they can see the lifecycle of the mapper: /** * Expert users can override this method for more complete control over the * execution of the Mapper. * @param context * @throws IOException */ public void run(Context context) throws IOException, InterruptedException { setup(context); while (context.nextKeyValue()) { map(context.getCurrentKey(), context.getCurrentValue(), context); } cleanup(context); 53 } setup(Context) - Perform any setup for the mapper. The default implementation is a no-op method. map(Key, Value, Context) - Perform a map operation in the given Key / Value pair. The default implementation calls Context.write(Key, Value) cleanup(Context) - Perform any cleanup for the mapper. The default implementation is a no-op method. Reference: Hadoop/MapReduce/Mapper Question: 102 Which one of the following files is required in every Oozie Workflow application? A. job.properties B. Config-default.xml C. Workflow.xml D. Oozie.xml Answer: C Question: 103 Which one of the following statements is FALSE regarding the communication between DataNodes and a federation of NameNodes in Hadoop 2.2? A. Each DataNode receives commands from one designated master NameNode. B. DataNodes send periodic heartbeats to all the NameNodes. C. Each DataNode registers with all the NameNodes. D. DataNodes send periodic block reports to all the NameNodes. Answer: A Question: 104 In a MapReduce job with 500 map tasks, how many map task attempts will there be? 54 A. It depends on the number of reduces in the job. B. Between 500 and 1000. C. At most 500. D. At least 500. E. Exactly 500. Answer: D Explanation: From Cloudera Training Course: Task attempt is a particular instance of an attempt to execute a task There will be at least as many task attempts as there are tasks If a task attempt fails, another will be started by the JobTracker Speculative execution can also result in more task attempts than completed tasks Question: 105 Review the following 'data' file and Pig code. Which one of the following statements is true? A. The Output Of the DUMP D command IS (M,{(M,62.95102),(M,38,95111)}) B. The output of the dump d command is (M, {(38,95in),(62,95i02)}) C. The code executes successfully but there is not output because the D relation is empty D. The code does not execute successfully because D is not a valid relation Answer: A Question: 106 Which one of the following is NOT a valid Oozie action? 55 A. mapreduce B. pig C. hive D. mrunit Answer: D Question: 107 Examine the following Hive statements: Assuming the statements above execute successfully, which one of the following statements is true? A. Each reducer generates a file sorted by age B. The SORT BY command causes only one reducer to be used C. The output of each reducer is only the age column D. The output is guaranteed to be a single file with all the data sorted by age Answer: A Question: 108 Your client application submits a MapReduce job to your Hadoop cluster. Identify the Hadoop daemon on which the Hadoop framework will look for an available slot schedule a MapReduce operation. A. TaskTracker B. NameNode C. DataNode D. JobTracker E. Secondary NameNode 56 Answer: D Explanation: JobTracker is the daemon service for submitting and tracking MapReduce jobs in Hadoop. There is only One Job Tracker process run on any hadoop cluster. Job Tracker runs on its own JVM process. In a typical production cluster its run on a separate machine. Each slave node is configured with job tracker node location. The JobTracker is single point of failure for the Hadoop MapReduce service. If it goes down, all running jobs are halted. JobTracker in Hadoop performs following actions(from Hadoop Wiki:) Client applications submit jobs to the Job tracker. The JobTracker talks to the NameNode to determine the location of the data The JobTracker locates TaskTracker nodes with available slots at or near the data The JobTracker submits the work to the chosen TaskTracker nodes. The TaskTracker nodes are monitored. If they do not submit heartbeat signals often enough, they are deemed to have failed and the work is scheduled on a different TaskTracker. A TaskTracker will notify the JobTracker when a task fails. The JobTracker decides what to do then: it may resubmit the job elsewhere, it may mark that specific record as something to avoid, and it may may even blacklist the TaskTracker as unreliable. When the work is completed, the JobTracker updates its status. Client applications can poll the JobTracker for information. Gravity. Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/? 2013 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. This list is frequently updated as titles leave and join Netflix. *New additions are indicated with an asterisk. Netflix has made headlines by investing in highbrow dramas that win Oscars. But sometimes you donât want that! Sometimes you just want to escape the increasingly insane world out there into an action movie. Netflix has made a few of their own, but the bulk of the best action films on their service are still Hollywood blockbusters from â90s modern classics to more accurate box office hits to films that may have slipped under your radar. From Ridley Scott to Michael Mann, here are the best action movies currently on Netflix. The BatmanYear: 2022 Matt Reeves now owns the saga of the Dark Knight as a sequel to this March 2022 action blockbuster has already been announced. Dropping on HBO Max while it was still in theaters and now unleashed into the rest of the streamers, The Batman is an ambitious epic reboot of the legendary hero, anchored by Reevesâs craft and fascinating performances from Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, and many more. The Big 4Year: 2022 Have you seen The Night Comes for Us? You would remember if you have because director Timo Tjahjanto is a maniac, a madman who choreographs and shoots action scenes like no one else in the world right now. He returned in late 2022 for his Netflix original about a group of assassins who are forced into action when someone kills their mentor. Itâs kind of like a live-action Looney Tunes with bazookas. Bullet TrainYear: 2022 It feels like this movie was actually a bigger hit on Netflix, where it popped up in the top ten for weeks after it dropped in December 2022. It makes sense because itâs the perfect fit for when youâre looking for something to turn your brain off to for a couple hours. Brad Pitt stars as an assassin who ends up on a train filled with fellow assassins, and, well, things get expectedly violent. Itâs a goofy movie, but it works on Netflix. DesperadoYear: 1995 Hot on the heels of the DIY movie that made him a star, El Mariachi, Robert Rodriguez basically remade that indie hit with a bigger budget in this 1995 action flick that stars Antonio Banderas in the title role. Heâs a musician who sets out to get vengeance against the drug lord who killed his lover. It also features a breakthrough performance by Salma Hayek. DuneYear: 2021 The directorial king of the smart blockbusters released another one in 2021 in his highly acclaimed adaptation of the Frank Herbert novels, which premiered on HBO Max along with theaters for a brief window on its way to massive worldwide acclaim and success. TimothĂ©e Chalamet stars in this sci-fi epic that was actually the most Oscar-winning film of 2021, taking home six trophies. Part Two was delayed until 2024 because of the strike, but the first half of this story is on Netflix to make the pain easier to take. Godzilla vs. KongYear: 2021 Adam Wingard (The Guest) directs this ultimate team-up between titans and he brings a playful glee to the entire project. Itâs a B-movie on a A-budget â consistently ridiculous but also nonstop fun â and it really delivers in terms of âunderstanding the assignment.â Wingard knows that these movies need to be larger than life escapism and thatâs exactly what he delivers. *GravityYear: 2013 Alfonso CuarĂłnâs Oscar winner has rarely been on streaming services so take this chance to watch this sci-fi masterpiece while you can. Sandra Bullock gives arguably her best performance as an astronaut who gets stranded in space, forced to find her way back to Earth on her own. Yes, it plays best in theaters, but itâs a movie worth watching in whatever manner possible. Hardcore HenryYear: 2015 Have you ever wanted to see a movie that replicated the feel of playing a first-person shooter video game? Then Hardcore Henry is the one for you. The plot doesnât really matterâthereâs something about experiments and lost memories and whateverâas this is all an exercise in style. Writer/director Ilya Naishuller straps viewers into the perspective of his increasingly powerful hero and then unleashes him on enemies who want to stop him. At its peak, itâs got some adrenaline-pumping lunacy thatâs admirable. The Harder They FallYear: 2021 The Harder They Fall came and went too fast in late 2021 and deserves to find a bigger audience on Netflix. The phenomenal Jonathan Majors stars in this stylish Western with tons of attitude, memorable characters, and brilliant set pieces. Heâs joined by Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, Lakeith Stanfield, Danielle Deadwyler, and many more in a film that feels like it will become bigger as its incredible cast become acting legends. HeatYear: 1995 Robert De Niro and Al Pacino star in one of the best movies of the â90s, a stunning cat-and-mouse game between a career criminal and a workaholic cop. The book release of Heat 2 in 2022 brought a lot of people back to this movie, one that has held up remarkably well over the nearly three decades since it was released. Itâs a masterpiece. *John WickYear: 2014 The one that started it all! Actually, all of the first three films in the series about the assassin who destroys worlds when his dog gets murdered are on Netflix, just waiting for the excellent fourth film to join them. Have a marathon and admire the incredible stunt choreography and charismatic leading man work from Keanu Reeves. Thereâs not a bad film in this franchise. *Jurassic ParkYear: 1993 An instant classic when it was released in 1993, Steven Spielbergâs dinosaur blockbuster spawned a franchise thatâs still humming almost three decades later with the 2022 release of the wildly successful Dominion. The first three films in the series, including Spielbergâs sequel The Lost World, are on Netflix right now, alongside the pretty fun Camp Cretaceous. The KillerYear: 2023 Michael Fassbender gives his best performance in years as an icy hired assassin who struggles to hold things together when a job goes horribly wrong. Itâs a movie about a self-proclaimed perfectionist who is constantly defying his own voiceover, a great film thatâs alternately hysterical and thrilling. One of the best of 2023. The RaidYear: 2011 Sometimes branded as The Raid: Redemption, this is quite simply one of the best action movies of the 2010s. It moves like a speeding bullet, telling the story of a police squad that gets caught in a building run by a ruthless drug lord, who basically turns the entire building into a deadly gauntlet. RRRYear: 2022 One of the biggest films in the world in 2022, this crazy action flick really took off in the United States when it dropped on Netflix. Itâs hard to put into words just how much movie you get with RRR. Itâs kind of all the movies â musical, romance, comedy, action, drama. Whatever youâre looking for, itâs in here. Youâll want to watch it twice. SilveradoYear: 1985 The great Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote and directed one of the best Westerns of its era, a film with a rock-star ensemble of young â80s actors. Silverado stars Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and Kevin Costner in the lead roles and theyâre ably assisted by an incredible supporting cast that features Brian Dennehy, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Rosanna Arquette, and Linda Hunt. This is a smart, funny Western that has stood the test of time. SkyfallYear: 2012 The Daniel Craig era of James Bond has come to a close and so now history can look back and appreciate his entire run. Is the best film of his five the centerpiece? Arguably. This epic unpacking of the history of 007 is gorgeously shot by Roger Deakins and perfectly directed by Sam Mendes. It features a strong villain performance from Javier Bardem and great supporting work from Albert Finney and Judi Dench. Heck, it even has a killer theme song. SnowpiercerYear: 2013 Bong Joon-ho became a household name (at least in cinephile circles) when he won the Oscar for Parasite, but he had a hit before that in this 2013 sci-fi action flick starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and John Hurt. Itâs a brilliant allegory for society as a train has been divided into classes per car, and the peasants form a revolt. Visually striking and narratively ambitious, this is a film that only seems to grow in esteem with each passing year, especially now that Bong is increasingly famous. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-VerseYear: 2023 What a gift to Netflix subscribers for this to already be on the service so soon after playing in theaters and landing on Blu-ray. This is how you do a big-budget blockbuster sequel, developing the themes of the first movie and setting up the stake for what now appears will be one of the best trilogies in superhero history. Packed with so much detail and creativity, itâs a film youâll want to watch over and over again. Triple FrontierYear: 2019 One of the most underrated Netflix originals, this early 2019 film was written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) and directed by the man who helmed Margin Call. The great ensemble here includes Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal in the story of a group of former U.S. soldiers who plan and (poorly) execute a heist in South America. This is an old-fashioned action movie with a great modern cast. The Wandering EarthYear: 2019 One of the biggest movies of the last decade is a Chinese film that most people in the United States havenât even seen. Making almost $700 million worldwide, this is the kind of blockbuster that the MCU kind of pushed out â a crazy, end-of-the-world disaster movie with a Roland Emmerich aesthetic and ridiculous special effects. Itâs almost overwhelming in its onslaught of crazy but sometimes you just want to see things go boom on a massive scale. Note: Thereâs a sequel in theaters now that will hopefully be on Netflix soon too. The Woman KingYear: 2022 Living legend Viola Davis stars in this retelling of the all-female warriors of the kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century. She plays General Nansica, who trains young women to follow in her footsteps, and leads a rock star ensemble of future stars that includes Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, and Sheila Atim. Youâll know all their names soon enough. If you subscribe to a service through their links, Vulture may earn an affiliate commission. âFast CharlieâRent or buy on most major platforms. I never knew I needed to hear Pierce Brosnan with a Southern accent until Phillip Noyceâs âFast Charlie.â The former Bond plays the titular âproblem solver,â as he calls himself, cooler than a summer breeze. A turf war between his boss, Stan (James Caan in one of his final film roles) and a New Orleans gangster named Beggar (Gbenga Akinnagbe) results in the apparent murder of Stan and his entire crew, pushing Charlie to seek vengeance before Beggar finds him, too. Charlieâs predicament also envelops his lover, Marcie (Morena Baccarin), a sharp-talking taxidermist. Charlie is rendered in the mold of John Wick, if Wick remained in the biz until his real retirement age. Brosman moves quietly and efficiently while leaning on smartly delivered one-liners. âWhat do you want?â Beggar asks. âYou, not breathing,â Charlie retorts. Some old dogs do well without new tricks. âThe Dirty SouthâAnother Southern revenge story, this time in Northern Louisiana, occurs in the writer-director Matthew Yerbyâs grim and gritty âThe Dirty South.â Weighed down by an alcoholic father and an absent, neâer-do-well mother, Sue Parker (Willa Holland) is on the verge of losing her family bar to the townâs wealthy patriarch, Jeb Roy (Dermot Mulroney), if she doesnât come up with $30,000 in three days. Lucky for her, Dion (Shane West), a petty pickpocket from an equally broken family, just rolled through town. Sue teams up with Dion to rob Jeb, striking a blow to Jebâs fief. At its heart, âThe Dirty Southâ is a heist flick. The resourceful Dion teaches the determined Sue the tricks of his trade and quickly falls in love with her. The climatic heist, a brawling affair between Sue and Jeb, is soundtracked by âCarol of the Bells,â ripping the bow from Yerbyâs rough and tumble holiday treat. âHard DaysâHaving previously written about âA Familyâ and the âThe Village,â Iâm persistently on the lookout for the Japanese director Michihito Fujiiâs next film. His special interest in random bystanders who become stuck in larger, nefarious webs re-emerges in his slick, unhinged remake of the Korean action film âA Hard Day.â Fujiiâs âHard Daysâ opens on Detective Kudo (Junichi Okada) accidentally hitting a pedestrian with his car. This victim turns out to be at the heart of a battle between a corrupt internal affairs investigator, Yazaki (Go Ayano), whoâs tasked with retrieving a key to a vault, and the elderly gangster (Akira Emoto) who is intent on stealing its contents. The messy situation immerses Kudo into a pure comedy, turning scenes requiring subterfuge â a traffic stop or his motherâs funeral â into hilarious near catastrophes. Okada builds his performance from broad physical gags toward a showdown against a crazed Yazaki among the tombstones of a Buddhist temple, not unlike the ending to the classic western âThe Good, the Bad and the Ugly.â Their battle of the wills even leaves an opening for a sequel. âThe Legend and Hag of ShaolinâThe Chinese director Zhang Dicaiâs âThe Legend and Hag of Shaolin,â with its faceless white-clad cult following its holy goddess on a trail to a MacGuffin treasure map, certainly qualifies as offbeat. Zhang leans into the comedic potential of this otherworldly premise through the two martial arts warriors â Hong (Gu Shangwei) and Shiyu (Zhao Wenzhuo) â who take the map into hiding. In a country village, the pair run an acupuncture clinic that, despite their best efforts to lay low, becomes a hit with the townâs women. Though corrupt martial arts masters, a romance and a major twist arise, the lighter-than-air fighting is the filmâs primary vehicle. Clean frames and fluid choreography imbue Hongâs leaps and slides with balletic grace. The Foley artists, the key engine to any good action film, propel these staged confrontations, making Hongâs trusty spear sound like a whistling crystal searching for blood. âRobbing MussoliniâPietro (Pietro Castellitto) is a small-time gun runner, who, with his sharpshooting partner Marcello (Tommaso Ragno), works to earn a living during the waning days of World War II. Though Pietro deals with the resistance, he isnât a revolutionary. Heâs on the side of earning the kind of money he hopes will impress his girlfriend, Yvonne (Matilda De Angelis), who happens to be the mistress of Achille Borsalino (Filippo Timi), a brutal Fascist commander. After hearing about the Italian leadershipâs plan to flee the country with a bounty of gold, Pietro forms a team to steal the treasure first. The Italian director Renato De Mariaâs âRobbing Mussoliniâ is an inspired blending of âInglourious Basterdsâ and âSunset Boulevard,â relying on lush period detail, ornate Art Deco sets and resplendent gowns emblazoned with intoxicating splashes of red. The heist itself, in a nearly impregnable square surrounded by high walls, barbed wire and snipers, is equally imaginative: Long tracking shots capture the bevy of explosions and well-choreographed firefights, with biting precision and arresting flair, on an audacious scale. Godzilla Minus One Arriving late in the year to claim the title of most pleasantly surprising action flick is âGodzilla Minus One.â Released just weeks ago, this Japanese monster movie masterpiece from director Takashi Yamazaki outshines even the yearâs biggest budget blockbusters. Despite reportedly costing only $15 million to make, âGodzilla Minus Oneâ is a visual marvel. Centered on former WWII pilot Koichi Shikishima as he and the rest of Japan attempt to rebuild in the aftermath of devastating war, this human drama suddenly gives way to spectacular kaiju battles when Godzilla emerges from the ocean. Interweaving tender character moments with jaw-dropping monster mayhem, âGodzilla Minus Oneâ represents the iconic movie monster at its finest. What ensues is an exhilarating thrill-ride punctuated by Wooâs trademark balletic gun-fu sequences. Woo flexes the full range of his directorial talents, from elegant bullet ballets to white-knuckle car chase scenes that pay homage to his finest â90s work. Tense stand-offs, athletic martial arts combat, and a brooding turn from Kinnaman make âSilent Nightâ a blast of adrenaline-fueled noir. Wooâs long-awaited Hollywood comeback blazes back into the action genre he helped define, positioning âSilent Nightâ among 2023âs most electrifying standouts. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning â Part 1 Tom Cruise proves 60 is just a number in the âMission: Impossible â Dead Reckoning Part 1,â a two-part action saga so epic one film couldnât contain its stunt spectacle. As tenacious spy Ethan Hunt, Cruise laughs in the face of mortality, topping the airborne feats of âTop Gun: Maverickâ by sending Hunt careening off a cliff atop a motorcycle. Director Christopher McQuarrie, no stranger to showcasing Cruiseâs seemingly superhuman physicality after 2018âs âFallout,â captures the starâs devotion to practical stunt work that leaves jaws on the floor. âDead Reckoning Part 1â offers a parade of edge-of-your-seat sequences with Cruise at the center, ever defiant of his age or the limits of possibility. Creed III Bringing the world of boxing anime to vivid life, âCreed IIIâ sees franchise star Michael B. Jordan take the directorâs chair for a deeply personal tale of honor and vengeance, inside and outside the ring. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, whose dominance faces an existential threat when childhood friend and formerly incarcerated fighter Damian (Jonathan Majors) emerges hungry to claim his status as an undisputed champ. Channeling classic fighting series like âAshita no Joe,â Jordan injects slick combat visuals directly inspired by the frenetic sparring and emotional gut punches of the best martial arts manga. Napoleon Ridley Scott brings his trademark epic grandeur to âNapoleon,â with sweeping battle scenes highlighting the French emperorâs ruthless conquest of Europe. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the French general hellbent on victory at any cost. Scottâs propulsive camerawork thrusts viewers straight into the chaos of 19th-century warfare: cavalry charges, cannon fire and other brutal combat. The director stages these sequences not just with flashy scale, but with visceral impact emphasizing the loss of life, with soldiers continually mowed down en masse. The action feels immediate and thrilling yet serves a solemn anti-war message tallying the dead left in Napoleonâs wake. Carrying the firepower of films like âGladiatorâ and âKingdom of Heaven,â âNapoleonâ proves Scott remains unmatched in staging hard-hitting war epics. Extraction 2 âExtraction 2â proves American action cinema is alive and well. Bringing back Chris Hemsworthâs black ops hero Tyler Rake after his presumed death in the first film, director Sam Hargrave raises the sequelâs narrative and action stakes. Hargrave delivers the genreâs future while acknowledging its past, including an audacious 21-minute one-shot prison riot with fiery stunt work. As Rake struggles with morality, the film features some of the most thrilling sequences yet, like a train/helicopter duel. Perfectly balancing engaging characters and over-the-top escapism, âExtraction 2â signals a bright future for slick, crowd-pleasing Hollywood action. Hargrave and âAvengersâ writer Joe Russo have advanced the franchise to new heights, blending emotional drama with ridiculous, breathtaking set pieces in one wildly fun package. John Wick: Chapter 4 âJohn Wick: Chapter 4â delivers the epic, barn-burning finale this action saga deserves. Keanu Reevesâ endlessly tormented assassin endures his ultimate gauntlet in a quest for freedom, with Chad Stahelski subjecting Wick to one jaw-dropping set piece after another. From a clash within Osakaâs Continental, to nightclub combat with an unrecognizable Scott Adkins, the film racks up masterful sequences leading to a show-stopping Paris standoff. Stahelski saves the best for last with an extended chase across rooftops and through landmarks as Wick fends off endless pursuers. A fitting close to the 21st-centuryâs defining action franchise, âChapter 4â grants Wick and fans alike the rousing last ride they demanded, though leaving the door ajar for more butt-kicking adventures. Motif-ation mattersThe Creator. Photo: Oren Soffer/20th Century Studios This post is updated regularly as movies leave and enter Hulu. *New additions are indicated with an asterisk. Itâs time to have some fun. Letâs put down all the serious, Oscar-winning dramas, leave the documentaries for another day, and forget about that TV season that everyone tells you that you should be watching. Thereâs a reason that the most successful genre on the home market has been the same for over a generation now: People love action movies. They allow us to escape reality and enter a world where the good guy (usually) wins the day. These are the best action flicks currently on Hulu, updated monthly. 13 AssassinsYear: 2011 Takashi Miike has directed over 100 movies, and this is one of the best, a stylish throwback to samurai cinema of old anchored by the modern filmmaking prowess of one of the best filmmakers alive. A remake of Eiichi Kudoâs 1963 film, this is loosely based on real events from 1844 when 12 samurai and a hunter worked together to assassinate the leader of the Akashi clan. Itâs a perfect balance of storytelling and sprays of samurai blood. AkiraÂYear: 1988 Animated action! Anyone who thinks a Japanese anime film from the â80s doesnât deserve a spot on this list simply hasnât seen Akira, a movie that feels more influential with each film that copies its template. Based on the 1982 manga of the same name and set in the oh-so-distant future of 2019, this story of a biker with telekinetic abilities has influenced dozens of action and sci-fi project. It gets better every time you watch it. (Note: Both the dubbed and subtitled versions are on Hulu.) *Con AirYear: 1997 Nicolas Cage leads one of his best ensembles in this hit about a plane full of convicts that gets hijacked. Of course, Cage plays the âgood criminal,â a guy sentenced to ten years for defending his pregnant wife. He finds himself the only possible savior on a plane full of real bad guys that includes John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, and Danny Trejo. *The CreatorYear: 2023 Yes, the script here gets a little clunky and cribs a bit too much from other sci-fi films, but history is going to come around to The Creator for one reason: It looks stunning. Itâs not just the blend of tactile cinematography and cutting-edge special effects, itâs the kind of visual language thatâs almost always missing from Hollywood blockbusters. Gareth Edwardsâ film will find an audience in the future. Get on the bandwagon early. Deep Blue SeaYear: 1999 Giant sharks + charismatic actors = something worth watching on Hulu. Itâs been fun to watch this B-movie guilty pleasure build a following in the quarter-century since its release. Itâs so popular still that there was a cheap sequel released not that long ago. Itâs the story of genetically engineered sharks who attack people played by Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, and Samuel L. Jackson, who has (spoiler!) one of the best death scenes in the history of action movies. Edge of TomorrowYear: 2014 Also known as Live Die Repeat, this is one of the best video game movies even if itâs not technically a video game movie. Itâs about a guy (Tom Cruise) who respawns every time he dies, taking what he learned from the previous attempt to try and defeat an alien race. Thatâs kind of how video games work. This movie rules, partially because it also includes a fantastic Emily Blunt supporting performance. Escape RoomYear: 2019 How did it take so long for Hollywood to make this one? A clever, enjoyable B-movie, this thriller flick takes the concept of an escape room to extremes, and it ended up making over $150 million worldwide, leading to a 2021 sequel. Taylor Russell and Logan Miller lead a group of people who end up having to survive a series of increasingly dangerous escape rooms. *Godzilla vs. KongYear: 2021 Adam Wingard (The Guest) directs this ultimate team-up between titans and he brings a playful glee to the entire project. Itâs a B-movie on an A-movie budgetâconsistently ridiculous but also nonstop funâand it really delivers in terms of âunderstanding the assignment.â Wingard knows that these movies need to be larger than life escapism and thatâs exactly what he delivers. *HeatYear: 1995 Robert De Niro and Al Pacino star in one of the best movies of the â90s, a stunning cat-and-mouse game between a career criminal and a workaholic cop. The book release of Heat 2 in 2022 brought a lot of people back to this movie, one that has held up remarkably well over the nearly three decades since it was released. Itâs a masterpiece. Jumanji: Welcome to the JungleYear: 2017 This massive blockbuster actually isnât on streaming services that often, so take this chance while you can on Hulu. Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan star as the avatar versions of four teens who end up transported into a video game. A massive hit when it was released, itâs already produced one sequel, with another in development. Itâs a lot of fun. *The Matrix ResurrectionsYear: 2021 Almost two decades after the release of The Matrix Revolutions, the Wachowskis returned to the world of Neo and Trinity with a brave, daring new vision that questions the very existence of this film. A truly subversive piece of blockbuster filmmaking, itâs also an undeniably imperfect movie, but its ambition should make it worth another look for those who dismissed it on single viewing. *The MummyYear: 1999 Brendan Fraser has had a career resurgence with his Oscar win for The Whale and his divisive role in Killers of the Flower Moon, so itâs a perfect time to revisit arguably his most popular film. Itâs the one that should have kept him a star for decadesâa wonderful adventure film that playfully updates the template that includes Indiana Jones and dates back to Errol Flynn. The entire trilogy is on Hulu. Ong Bak: The Thai WarriorYear: 2005 In 2003, action movie fans were looking for the next Jackie Chan or Jet Li and they found a martial arts superstar in Tony Jaa, who had his breakout film in Ong-Bak, the story of a Muay Thai master in a small village in Thailand who ventures to retrieve the stolen head of an ancient statue for his people. The film was a hit, producing two sequels, also both on Hulu. Pacific RimYear: 2013 One of the most underrated action movies of its era, Guillermo del Toroâs ode to giant monster movies is an unpretentious delight, a movie that understands its B-movie origins and what people need from a flick about massive robots fighting enormous monsters. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Charlie Day star in a movie that kinda underperformed initially but has built a loyal following over the last decade. PreyYear: 2022 The director of 10 Cloverfield Lane clearly knows how to make unexpected films in hit franchises and thatâs exactly what he delivers in one of the biggest original film hits in the history of Hulu. A prequel to Predator, Prey details what happened when the alien killing machine crossed paths with a Comanche woman (Amber Midthunder) three centuries ago. Shadow in the CloudYear: 2020 Chloe Grace Moretz stars in this clever genre hybrid that starts as a study of sexism on a fighter plane over the Pacific during World War II and then becomes basically an alien movie. Moretz is the first unexpected passenger on the plane; a gremlin who seems to be trying to take it down is a bigger problem. Lean and mean, this is a ridiculous B-movie, but donât question the logic, just enjoy the ride. SnowpiercerYear: 2013 Bong Joon-ho became a household name (at least in cinephile circles) when he won the Oscar for Parasite, but he had a hit before that in this sci-fi action flick starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and John Hurt. Itâs a brilliant allegory for society as a train has been divided into classes per car, and the peasants form a revolt. Visually striking and narratively ambitious, Snowpiercer is a film that only seems to grow in esteem with each passing year, especially now that Bong is increasingly famous. UnderwaterYear: 2020 Dumped in theaters just before the pandemic broke the industry forever, this underrated thriller has already developed something of a following on VOD and then HBO Max before now sliding over to Hulu. Kristen Stewart stars as a worker on an underwater drilling facility who discovers something ancient under the water. Half disaster movie and half monster movie, itâs a lot of fun. *War of the WorldsYear: 2005 The star and director of Minority Report reunited for this phenomenal adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells tale about the end of the world. Tom Cruise plays an ordinary guy who tries to survive the day the enemy aliens arrived in this incredibly well-directed action epic that plays well as escapism but can also be read as one of the first great movies about 9/11. *X-Men: First ClassYear: 2011 The entire X-Universe was essentially rebooted in Matthew Vaughnâs great superhero film, one that turned the series from the somber tone of the â00s flicks to something more playful and fun. James McAvoy took on Professor X and Michael Fassbender stepped into the metal boots of Magneto for this smart prequel with style to spare. Itâs held up well as one of the better superhero movies of the 2010s. If you subscribe to a service through their links, Vulture may earn an affiliate commission.
