Scope of Practice

What is the scope of practice of a medical assistant? In some states medical assistants have a clearly stated scope of practice, but in some states there is no law on the matter. Several Web sites for medical assistants state that a medical assistant can:

  • Perform clinical and administrative tasks to keep the workflow going, if supervised by a physician or other health care practitioner.

  • Determine the acuity of a visit and the visit length for appointment scheduling purposes using an office protocol provided by the supervising physician.

  • Measure and record vital signs.

  • Record patient demographics and basic information about the presenting and previous conditions.

  • Use medical terminology and accepted charting abbreviations.

  • Escort patients to the test room and prepare them for an exam.

  • Use scientific methods to solve problems and choose a mathematical method or formula to solve problems.

  • Convey clinical information on behalf of the physician.

  • Arrange examining-room instruments and equipment.

  • Change wound dressings and obtain wound cultures.

  • Remove sutures or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations.

  • Operate diagnostic equipment but cannot interpret tests.

  • Provide patient information and instructions.

  • Provide a single dose of oral medication as ordered by the physician to a patient for immediate self-administration under observation.

  • Administer medications topically, sublingually, vaginally, rectally, and by injection.

  • Perform CPR and render First Aid in an emergency.

  • Prepare patients for examination, including draping, shaving, and disinfecting treatment sites.

  • Perform aseptic procedures such as wound care.

  • Collect blood specimens via capillary and venipuncture technique.

  • Obtain specimens by noninvasive techniques, such as wound cultures.

  • Perform simple laboratory and screening tests customarily performed STAT in a medical office, such as urinalysis.

  • Administer different types of cryotherapy to reduce pain or swelling.

  • Filing and bookkeeping.

  • Process insurance claims.

  • Transcribe medical dictation for medical records. Call in prescription orders or refills to the pharmacy, but only as ordered and approved by physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

The sites warns that medical assistants cannot:

  • Independently perform telephone triage (medical assistants are not legally authorized to interpret data or diagnose symptoms!).

  • Independently diagnose or treat patients.

  • Independently prescribe medications.

  • Independently give out medication samples.

  • Independently refill prescription requests.

  • Advise patients about their condition or treatment regimen.

  • Make assessments or perform any kind of medical care decision making.

  • Administer any anesthetic agent (except topical numbing agents such as EMLA cream).

  • Perform tests that involve the penetration of human tissues except for skin tests and drawing blood as provided by law.

PLATTSBURGH — A Medical Assistant renowned for her unwavering support of colleagues while ensuring patients with diabetes get the care they need has been honored as the latest recipient of the BEE Award at The University of Vermont Health Network-Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH).

Laura Crossman was presented the award during a surprise ceremony with her team at CVPH Endocrinology.

Crossman is the second staff member to receive the BEE award, which is short for Beyond Exceptional Everyday. It was established earlier this year at CVPH to recognize members of the hospital’s support staff who go above and beyond in their roles to help provide excellent patient care.

Crossman was nominated by Catherine LaPier, BSN, RN, CDCES, a Certified Diabetes Educator focusing on inpatients at CVPH. She has worked with Crossman in multiple roles and departments, most recently at CVPH Endocrinology.

“Laura shows up every day and goes above and beyond to take care of all patients and providers,” LaPier writes in her nomination. “She makes her workload look effortless at times. She rooms, downloads, pre-visit plans, manages referrals, handles all the DME labs, and does countless reminders to patients to get their labs done.”

However, it is Crossman’s dedication to their patients that stands out the most for LaPier. In her nomination, she references a situation where Crossman spent hours on the phone fighting to ensure a patient was able to get what he needed to manage his diabetes.

“Laura continued to fight for him, because it was the right thing to do,” LaPier says, also noting the difference Crossman makes with her colleagues on a daily basis.

“Her dedication helped make my role much more manageable. She took care of tasks that allowed me to focus on other patient needs. Laura is an extremely valuable member of the Endocrinology team. The office runs more smoothly because of her, but more importantly, patients get what they need to take care of themselves thanks to Laura.”

During the award presentation, Crossman was presented with a certificate commending her for her extraordinary work. She, like all honorees, also received a BEE Award pin, a beautiful and meaningful sculpture and a basket filled with bee-themed gifts.

All CVPH employees who support patient care by working together with physicians and registered nurses to Improve the physical, emotional and spiritual health of patients and their loved ones are eligible for the BEE Award. Nomination forms and boxes are located at each of the hospital’s main entrances and on the CVPH website.

Support staff may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues. A committee reviews nominations and awards a deserving employee each quarter.

  • People Assisting Animal Control
  • PAAC received at $10,000 grant to increase veterinary health care services to animals across the Coastal Bend
  • Several months ago, PAAC applied for the grant from Petco Love, a non-profit group aimed at helping animal groups in the U.S. with various services

Just in time for the new year, People Assisting Animal Control (PAAC) received a $10,000 grant from Petco Love to support lifesaving measures of providing more veterinary health care to animals across the Coastal Bend.

Petco Love is a non-profit organization that supports more than 4,000 animal groups by providing veterinary health care and over 6.75 million adoptions since 1999.

"That's the goal, to keep and their pets together, so let's give them the medical attention that they need," founder and PAAC President Cheryl Martinez said.

Martinez created PAAC in 2010 after working with the city of Corpus Christi's Animal Care Service Center. She noticed the intense need for more animal adoptions and medical care.

After providing services to hundreds of animals, Martinez opened a wellness clinic at the PAAC facility in 2015.

“We do surgeries now 5 days a week," Martinez said. " I have 5 doctors that work for me and we’re doing over 800 surgeries a month right now for the Coastal Bend area.”

The facility also provides animals with annual vaccinations, infection treatments as well as heart work, flea, and tick prevention.

“This grant is access to care," Martinez said. "There are several people in their country that just do not have access to care and most of it is for financial resources. So why not provide them with resources, so they can keep the pet?"

The $10,000 grant investment from Petco Love is part of a $1.5 million initiative to help over 100 spay/neuter clinics and other low-cost veterinary facilities.

Over the past 13 years, Martinez said she has helped more animals than she has ever imagined. She's hoping to continue her efforts in expanding proper medical care and also providing outreach opportunities to families and their four-legged friends.

PAAC serves seven counties in the Coastal Bend including Aransas County, Bee County, Jim Wells County, Kleberg County, Nueces County, San Patricio County and Refugio County.

For more information on how they're assisting animals, check out the PAAC and Petco Love website.
