Unless you have an obvious problem with your Apple device like a cracked screen, it can be hard to tell if an issue your device is having is something that needs repairing or something software-related that just needs a reinstall. Short of trial-and-error, such an issue requires heading down to the Apple Store for a Genius to diagnose the problem.

Now you can save yourself a trip. Apple announced this week that its Diagnostic troubleshooting suites are available for iPhone and Mac as part of its Self Service Repair program. Apple explains that the tool is “intended for users with the knowledge and expertise to repair Apple devices,” and “will provide customers the same ability as Apple Authorized Service Providers and Independent Repair Providers to test devices for optimal part functionality and performance, as well as identify which parts may need repair.”

Along with the new tool (which requires iOS 17 or macOS Sonoma 14.1 and later), Apple also announced that all iPhone 15 models and M2 Macs are now able to be self-repaired. The tools are available in the U.S. and will expand to Europe in 2024.

To use the new tool, you’ll need to put your iPhone or Mac into diagnostics mode and then enter its serial number to check which Diagnostic suites are available for your device.

Apple Watch 9 Problems: 5 Things You Need to Know

Apple Watch 9 users have run into an assortment of problems in the months since its release. If you own an Apple Watch 9, or if you’re thinking about buying one, here’s what you need to know.

We haven’t heard about any widespread problems though they have seen complaints about various bugs and performance issues. Some of these issues are minor while others are far more problematic.

With that in mind, they want to run down everything you need to know about Apple Watch 9 problems.

Our guide outlines the most common Apple Watch 9 problems, provides potential fixes for issues, highlight places to find feedback about the Apple Watch 9’s performance, and offers a look at what’s next in the watchOS 10 pipeline for the device.

Apple Watch 9 Problems

The list of Apple Watch 9 problems has grown since launch. Apple’s fixed some of the initial problems, but we’ll continue to see issues emerge as more people buy the device and as owners put more mileage on the watch.

Thus far, we’ve heard about problems that plague every single version of the Apple Watch. The current list of Apple Watch 9 problems includes the following:

  • Abnormal battery drain
  • Issues with cellular service
  • Pairing problems
  • Charging issues
  • Bluetooth issues
  • Problems with first and third-party applications
  • UI lag
  • Software installation issues

We’ll continue to update this list as they push away from Apple’s latest watchOS software release.

Apple Watch 9 Performance

If you’re thinking about buying an Apple Watch 9, or if you already bought one, it’s important to keep tabs on feedback about the device’s performance. This feedback will alert you to potential problems with the device’s hardware and software.

Fortunately, there are plenty of places to find feedback about the Apple Watch 9’s current performance.

We recommend keeping an eye on YouTube, Apple’s discussion forums, social media sites, and the MacRumors forums for the latest information.

We’ve published a quick watchOS 10.2 review that covers the software’s performance and they plan to release guides covering future watchOS 10 updates as well.

How to Fix Apple Watch 9 Problems

If you run into an issue on your Apple Watch 9, your first instinct might be to contact Apple for help. However, you may be able to fix the problem(s) on your own in a matter of minutes.

In many cases, restarting your Apple Watch and/or your iPhone will fix an issue. You might also want to try performing a hard reset as this can alleviate performance issues.

If you’re having issues charging your Apple Watch 9, make sure the device is situated properly on the charger. You may also want to try a different cord and/or outlet to see if that helps.

For more potential fixes, you should head on over to Apple’s discussion forums. If the users there can’t help you, you might want to get in contact with Apple via its website.

If you still can’t fix your issue(s), schedule an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple Store. They should be able to diagnose your issue(s) relatively quickly.

watchOS Downgrade

This is a PSA for new Apple Watch users: You can move back to older software on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but downgrading isn’t an option for the Apple Watch.

In other words, once you install a new software update on your Apple Watch 9, you can’t move your device off that software until Apple releases new watchOS 10 firmware.

You can go to an Apple Store if your watch is completely broken, but they will replace it if the device is under warranty. They won’t help you downgrade to older watchOS software.

What’s Next

If your Apple Watch 9 is struggling, help from Apple is on the way.

The company’s working on a new watchOS 10.3 update and it’s currently in beta testing. They expect the firmware to arrive alongside iOS 17.3 for iPhone in late January or February.

If you can’t wait that long, you can download a pre-release version of the software onto your Apple Watch right now via the company’s beta program.

6 Reasons to Wait for Apple Watch 10 & 4 Reasons Not To

Wait for a Brand New Design

Wait for a Brand New Design

One of the biggest changes from Gurman's report about the Apple Watch 10 is a new design.

Since its inception, the Apple Watch design has remained largely the same, save for incremental improvements the company's made over the years.

According to Gurman, Apple's designers are working on a thinner watch case. He hasn't elaborated on the exact dimensions.

Obviously this would be a huge change as it would cut down on the device's bulk and probably help the device feel lighter on the wrist.

The report also notes that they could also see Apple change the way bands are attached to the Watch.

As it stands, Apple Watch bands have slid into the sides of the device's chassis and are kept in place with a locking mechanism.

Gurman says the company is exploring a new magnetic band attachment system, but it's unclear if the change will be ready in time for the these models.

In a follow-up report about Apple's plans for 2024, Gurman says the company is planning "at least one model with a new look."

Leaker Kosutami, who has been accurate in the past, backs this up and says the new design will break compatibility with existing Apple Watch bands.

It's still early and Apple's plans could certainly change between now and launch and we'll let you know what they hear in the months ahead.

We found the worst Apple Watch Series 9 problems (and how to fix them)

The Apple Watch is one of the most popular smartwatches on the market today, and this year, they have the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Though they look exactly like their predecessors and don’t have exciting new health sensors, this year’s Apple Watches do have some fun new features. For example, Double Tap is a new gesture that lets you perform certain actions on the Apple Watch one-handed, and the new S9 chip allows Siri to perform localized requests rather than relying on a data connection.

But even the Apple Watch isn’t perfect. You may bump into some problems every now and then. If that’s you right now, they have a few tips to get you back on track. Here are some common Apple Watch Series 9 problems and how you can fix them.

Double Tap isn’t working

A person using Double Tap on the Apple Watch Series 9.
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Double Tap feature is one of the best new features of the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. This new gesture lets you do things like answer calls, turn off your alarm, reply to messages, and more. To do the Double Tap gesture, you simply tap your index finger and thumb together twice.

No additional setup is required to enable Double Tap on the Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 (these are the only compatible models right now). So, anyone who has the new Apple Watches should be able to access Double Tap right away. But if it’s not working for you, there could be a few reasons why.

First, you need to make sure that your Apple Watch is on watchOS 10.1, as this software version enables the feature. You could also ensure that Double Tap wasn’t turned off accidentally by going to Settings > Gestures and making sure Double Tap is on.

Another thing to note is that Double Tap is not available when the Apple Watch is in Low Power Mode or the Sleep Focus is active. It also does not work when the screen is inactive (wrist down), and certain accessibility features may disable it.

Lastly, Double Tap is not available at all on Apple Watches that are set up for a family member – it only works for your own Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 and if it is on your wrist and unlocked.

Watch face complications not showing up

One of the best things about an Apple Watch is the watch faces. While some of the watch faces that are offered in watchOS are simple or animated, others can be much more informative with your choice of app complications. With complications, you can see bits of data like the current temperature, date, upcoming calendar events, when the sun sets, and more.

But sometimes, you may encounter blips where the complication you’ve chosen just isn’t showing up or isn’t working properly. For example, many people were complaining about Apple’s Weather app complication not loading properly for a while. There are a few different ways to remedy this.

First, you’ll want to make sure that everything is up to date. This includes the version of watchOS that you are running, as well as making sure the app itself is also current. If that does not work, try rebooting the Apple Watch by turning it off and back on again.

If those typical steps don’t work, you could try replacing the complication that isn’t working with something else, make sure that one loads on the watch face, and then switch it back to the original complication you’re trying to get to work.

A common issue with the Weather complication not working was because it was set to “current location,” which seemed to cause issues with some users. If that’s the case, try setting the location to a specific city instead of the current location and see if that works.

And if all else fails, you could try restoring the Apple Watch, but make sure that you have your data backed up first.

Bad battery life

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 have exceptional battery life, with a single charge lasting around 36 hours. However, the regular Apple Watch Series 9 does not have such long-lasting battery life, as it still only gets about a full day of use before you should juice it up again. However, you might feel like your battery should last longer than it is. Luckily, there are a few things you could do.

The best solution to extend the battery life of your Apple Watch Series 9 (or older) is to turn on Low Power Mode. In this mode, the amount of power that is used is reduced, extending the battery life. Of course, you’ll have to make some compromises — Low Power Mode will turn off the always-on display, Double Tap, Time in Daylight, heart rate notifications, background heart rate and blood oxygen measurements, and start workout reminder.

Another important step to ensure that you’re maximizing battery life is to make sure you’re running the latest version of watchOS.

Control Center on the Apple Watch Series 9.
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Since the Apple Watch Series 5, Apple has added an always-on display for every Apple Watch (except for the SE). Of course, having the display always on takes up power, so you could reduce that by turning off the always-on display if you don’t need it. Combining that with turning off raise to wake (tap the screen to wake instead) can extend the battery life further.

By default, Background App Refresh is on and controls background access to data that you’ve given certain apps to read. This is a good option to turn off if you don’t need it, and you can do so by going to the Watch app on your iPhone, selecting General, going to Background App Refresh, and turning it off entirely or for specific apps. The apps that you’ve selected for watch face complications will continue to run even if the Background App Refresh setting is off.

If none of those have worked, you could use the last resort option and restore your Apple Watch. Again, make sure your data is backed up first before nuking it.

A flickering display

A person wearing the Apple Watch Series 9, showing the Snoopy watch face
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Some users have reported issues with flickering displays on the Apple Watch Series 9. This issue involves the display brightness flickering or “pulses” on affected models with the always-on display enabled. Though most of the affected models are the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, older models are not immune. The common denominator is watchOS 10.

If you are experiencing this problem, Apple has advised that service providers do not fix affected displays. Instead, Apple has said to keep the watchOS software up-to-date.

But if you want a temporary solution right now, Apple says you can turn off the always-on display for the time being. Another issue arose where some complications, like the Activity rings, may turn pink temporarily. There is no known fix for this issue aside from waiting it out.

Sat, 16 Dec 2023 09:59:00 -0600 Christine Romero-Chan en text/html https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/apple-watch-series-9-problems-how-to-fix-common-issues/ Apple is worth $3 trillion. It also has a few obvious problems.
  • Apple is heading into 2024 as the world's most valuable company again.
  • The company's share price is high, but hardware sales and China are areas of weakness.
  • The latest setback: Pausing US sales of the newest Apple Watch at peak holiday buy time.

It's easy to think of Apple as near-invincible.

It is, after all, on course to end the year as a $3 trillion mega cap. That position comfortably makes it the world's most valuable company for the fifth year running.

But 2023 has given Apple the occasional headache. Heading into 2024, here are some of its biggest challenges.

Apple announced on Monday that it would stop selling two Apple Watch models — during the critical holiday period.

1. New Apple Watch sales

Apple Watch Series 9.
Apple

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 won't be available for purchase from its US online store from December 21 and its physical stores from December 24. The decision followed a rare loss for Apple in a patent dispute with Masimo, a health-tech company.

The International Trade Commission ruled earlier this year that a blood oxygen sensor in Apple's newest watches violated patents held by Masimo. The US body issued a "limited excursion order" against Apple's wristwear in October.

Apple will likely have a workaround ready swiftly, but the sales pause is still a blow.

Apple might be able to settle with Masimo, but settling is outside its comfort zone. The firm's settlement with Qualcomm over access to 5G chips in 2019 was a big deal, after Apple accused the chip firm of overcharging in a $1 billion lawsuit.

Engineers are readying a software update to address issues with the watches, per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The move was described as a "high-stakes engineering effort unlike any Apple has undertaken before."

2. The Vision Pro's success

Next year, Apple will introduce the world to the Vision Pro. The $3,499 mixed-reality headset, which will reportedly go on sale in early 2024, marks the start of Apple's biggest hardware push since the launch of the iPhone in 2007.

Early predictions suggest it might struggle to reach similar levels of success to the iPhone, Apple's biggest revenue driver. In Apple's most accurate quarter, iPhones generated $43.8 billion in net sales, roughly 50% of overall net sales.

No one expects the Vision Pro to come close to this in the short term, but the sales forecast is underwhelming even with tempered expectations.

Analysts at research firm Canalys estimate that just 350,000 Vision Pro units will be shipped in its first year, though they predict this to increase to more than 12.6 million within five years. The device, they predict, will still lag Apple Watch and iPad unit sales.

Rex Woodbury, managing partner at VC firm Daybreak, wrote on Substack that "after a slow 2024 start, sales will increase as Apple drops the price and as killer apps emerge."

It's possible, but high risk. Apple's major rivals in this area, such as Meta, have yet to convince a mainstream audience of the merits of augmented- and virtual-reality.

3. China

Apple CEO Tim Cook in China.

The other big issue facing Apple right now is its position in China.

The country is Apple's most important international market, but bigger factors put its position at risk.

A week before the release of the iPhone 15, Apple suffered a $200 billion market-cap drop. That's partly attributable to the emergence of a major Chinese competitor — Huawei's 5G Mate 60 Pro — and to reports of a government crackdown on iPhones.

China's reaction to the homegrown phone was patriotic. And first-month sales of the iPhone 15 in China were 6% lower than the iPhone 14 over the same period the prior year, according to Bloomberg, citing data from market researcher GfK.

Correction: December 19, 2023 — An earlier version of this story misstated the predicted unit sales for the Vision Pro. The correct figures were 350,000 in its first year and 12.6 million by its fifth year, not 350 and 12,600.

Mon, 18 Dec 2023 22:07:00 -0600 en-US text/html https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-watch-vision-pro-problems-at-3-trillion-peak-2023-12 Apple Music collaborative playlists not coming in iOS 17.2, likely due to abuse and spam problems

One of the headlining features of the first iOS 17.2 beta was support for Apple Music collaborative playlists. Apple then removed this feature with iOS 17.2 beta 4 last week, and unfortunately, it doesn’t return with today’s iOS 17.2 RC update.

This means that Apple Music’s collaborative playlists feature won’t debut in iOS 17.2 and has likely been delayed until 2024.

Collaborative playlist support for Apple Music was first announced at WWDC in June. The feature wasn’t included in the initial release of iOS 17 in September, but Apple promised it would be added before the end of the year.

When iOS 17.2 beta 1 added collaborative playlists support, it seemed like Apple was on track to hit that goal…until the feature was removed with iOS 17.2 beta 4.

Code seen by 9to5Mac suggests that Apple pulled collaborative Apple Music playlists from iOS 17.2 due to concerns about abuse and spam. Apple is still working on the feature and adding new precautions to cut down on these issues, including adding limits on how many “pending requests” a playlist owner can have.

But while that work continues, the collaborative Apple Music playlists feature isn’t expected to be included in iOS 17.2. Apple published the full release notes for iOS 17.2 today, and the feature isn’t mentioned.

Here are the new features for Apple Music in iOS 17.2:

  • Favorite Songs Playlist in Apple Music lets you quickly get back to the songs you mark as favorites
  • Use Listening History in Apple Music can be disabled in a Focus so music you listen to does not appear in Recently Played or influence your recommendations

iOS 17.2 will likely be Apple’s final major update of the year for the iPhone. It’s possible they may get another update focused on bug fixes, but any significant new features will be saved for iOS 17.3. The first beta of iOS 17.3 could be released before the end of the year, but the update won’t be released to the public until next year.

For example, iOS 16.3 beta 1 was released on December 14 last year, and the update was released to everyone on January 23.

The best Apple HomeKit devices for 2023

While not as widespread as Google Home or Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit remains one of the most popular smart home ecosystems of 2023. The software plays well with iOS devices, and several other gadgets such as smart lights, smart locks, thermostats, and cameras can be controlled using the fancy technology. If you’re looking to build your smart home around Apple’s ecosystem, here are the best HomeKit devices available today.

Locks

A person unlocking the Aqara U100 smart lock with their phone.

HomeKit doesn’t have the largest selection of smart locks, but that doesn’t really matter when you have something as well-rounded as the Aqara Smart Lock U100. Not only does it offer full HomeKit support, but you’ll even gain access to Apple home keys — allowing you to unlock your door with your iPhone or Apple Watch. There’s also the standard keypad for entering a passcode, along with a fingerprint sensor that can store several dozen fingerprints (so your whole family can enter the home without worrying about forgetting their password or smartphone).

A physical key is included for emergency access, and the smart lock is designed to run for up to eight months before you’ll need to replace its batteries. Other standout features include “Do Not Disturb Mode,” auto-locking, and an IP65 rating to help it withstand whatever nature throws its way.

The Schlage Encode Plus is another solid option. This lock includes all of the latest HomeKit features, including Apple home key support. Of course, you still have access to a physical key lock and touchscreen support. The Encode Plus also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant while having full HomeKit and Siri support. The lock is pretty expensive at $299, but if you want a lock with all of Apple’s secure HomeKit features and a host of other features, Schlage’s Encode Plus is currently your only route.

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is still a great choice for one of the best smart locks and makes it possible for you to do things like track who is coming and going, provide access to specific people, or lock and unlock your door remotely. Plus, it attaches to your existing deadbolt, so you don’t have to get a new set of house keys. In addition to being compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, it’s also compatible with Apple HomeKit, too. You can check out their full review of the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock.

Don’t want to have to worry about a house key? Yale Assure Lock uses a touchscreen keypad. If you upgrade your Yale Assure Lock (models YRD246 or YRD256) with a Yale iM1 Network Module, it’ll be compatible with Apple HomeKit. The module typically costs somewhere in the $50 range, and it’ll let you control the lock with voice commands and more. Read more about the Yale Assure SL lock in their full review.

You could also spring for the Yale Assure Lock 2, which comes in a variety of designs — including a few models that provide you remote access to your front door via Wi-Fi. Our review found it to be a premium smart lock that’s more than worth its hefty price tag. If you’re deep into the Apple ecosystem, consider springing for the Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus with Apple Home Keys, as it works not just with HomeKit, but also supports Home Keys — allowing you to unlock your door with a tap of your iPhone or Apple Watch.

Now your favorite Hue products work with your Apple devices. You can adjust dimming, change colors in certain rooms, sync your lights, set scenes, and more. The Philips Hue Starter Kit is a great way to get started with smart lighting.

Lifx A19 LED Bulbs are another great HomeKit-compatible option. Delivering 1,100 lumens, they’re about as bright as a 75-watt incandescent bulb. However, they’re energy-efficient at only 11 watts, and they have a 22-year lifespan. With 16 million color options and no hub required, Lifx A19s offers a lot in a compact-sized bulb, including the Candle Color, the first smart LED bulb that can emit multiple colors of light at once.

The Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 Smart Bulb boasts full HomeKit support, and it even works with Matter. It’ll provide you access to millions of different colors, a simple smartphone app, and a quick setup process. Consider giving it a look if you need something that works not just with Apple HomeKit, but other smart home platforms you may have running in your house.

If you want something a little bit different, Nanoleaf’s Light Panels are triangular smart light panels you can shape into whatever design you like. Connect them to Apple HomeKit to activate different scenes. There’s even a rhythm add-on, so your panels and music will work in sync. If you’re looking for a less expensive way to add some color to your space, another great option is the Lifx Z, a HomeKit controllable Multi Color LED Light strip. The ribbon comes in at 6.6 feet, and additional extensions can be added on for greater flexibility.

Switches and smart plugs

Don’t have a smart light but want to tell “Hey Siri, dim the bedroom light?” The WeMo Smart Light Switch lets you voice-control your lights, set your lights on a schedule, and optimize them based on the bulbs you’re using and prevent flickering. With Apple HomeKit, you can tell Siri to turn the lights off for bedtime, or you can have it set the lights to brighten in the morning. The Lutron Caseta Smart Lighting Dimmer Switch is also compatible with HomeKit, and you can even install the switch without a neutral wire.

Another option is to go with a smart plug, which lets you control devices you plug in (think lamps, holiday lights, or even appliances). The Wemo Smart Plug with Thread from Belkin lets you control a plugged-in device with your voice or phone when connecting it to Apple HomeKit. This edition with Thread support allows for a faster and more reliable connection. For an even smaller version, you may prefer the Pure Gear PureSwitch, which offers app control, timers, and energy management options for anything you plug in. If you want to replace an entire outlet (both top and bottom) then check out the Connectsense Smart Outlet 2. You’ll also get a lot of information about how much energy your devices are using, through the Connectsense app. This plug also works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

Thermostats

Ecobee released its Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Smart Thermostat Enhanced models in 2022. Seeing that the Ecobee 4 was their previous choice for the best thermostat, it’s easy to provide the crown to the new generation. The model sports a new design and the Ecobee’s Smart Thermostat Premium has Siri fully built-in and is HomeKit-compatible. It still works with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, as well. The new radar sensor and air quality monitor take the advancements and convenience up a level. If you want something a bit more affordable, the Ecobee Lite still has a lot to offer. The Lite works with HomeKit and other smart home systems, but it doesn’t have Alexa built into the thermostat.

Honeywell’s Lyric T6 Pro thermostat is HomeKit-compatible as well, and it’s a very cost-effective option. The T6 Pro is an upgrade to one of their old top choices, Honeywell’s Lyric T5. It has features like geofencing, scheduling, and smart alerts. Adaptive auto-recovery makes it so the thermostat knows how long it takes to heat or cool your home to your desired temperature at specific times, and the thermostat can also auto-change from heat to cool. Otherwise, if you are more interested in a minimal approach — a thermostat that appears to disappear into your wall — you’ll want to take a look at the ; variations are available for both baseboard heating and in-floor heating. Minimal doesn’t mean simple, however, as the Mysa includes a smartphone app to monitor your energy usage and set up a heating schedule.

Cameras and security devices

Logitech’s Circle View is a smart choice if you’re focused on personal privacy with features such as an electronic shutter. It’s weatherproof, easy to set up, and has some pretty decent free features, like 24-hour cloud storage and smart alerts with snapshots. It also has an impressive view radius of 180 degrees. Some of the more advanced features, like person detection and motion zones, require a paid subscription (after a 10-day free trial).

Eufy also has a range of affordable indoor and outdoor cameras that work flawlessly with HomeKit Secure Video. Another great part is that you don’t need a subscription to use these cameras either. Check out Eufy Indoor Cam 2K , Indoor Cam Pan & Tilt 2K, and Floodlight Cam 2 Pro to get the best of the company’s offerings. Keep in mind that if you want to stream a HomeKit-enabled camera remotely, you need a HomePod Mini, an Apple TV 4K, or Apple TV (4th generation).

Apple HomeKit supports other security devices outside of just cameras. Eve and Aqara create complete lines of various sensors to place around and monitor your home. For example, Eve has a door and window sensor, a motion sensor, and a room sensor that monitors temperature and air quality. Aqara also has low-cost sensors, including a water-leak sensor, temperature and humidity sensor, and a vibration sensor, to name a few. Sensors like those or the can add extra home security while also making it possible for you to do things like have the lights turn on when your door opens.

Your options for video doorbells are limited with HomeKit, but the Logitech Circle View Wired Doorbell is a solid option. It’s a bit pricey at $200, but it offers secure storage that’s encrypted before getting backed up to iCloud, rich notifications that alert you when an animal, vehicle, or person is detected, and it supports customizable motion zones. It’s also a rather sleek device, featuring a design that’s all black and with a footprint smaller than most other video doorbells on the market.

A/V devices

Whether you’re a music fanatic or cinephile, you can use an Apple HomePod mini to expand your at-home A/V experience. For starters, the HomePod mini is an excellent way to listen to your favorite playlists. The speaker’s sound is surprisingly room-filling for its size and includes Thread connectivity to help with your other smart home accessories. Purchase multiple HomePod minis, and you can pair them together to create 360-degree stereo sound.

If you’re willing to drop a bit more cash, you can snag the new HomePod 2023 for $299. It offers everything found in the HomePod mini, although you’ll be treated to radically improved audio. Thanks to its larger footprint, the HomePod manages to pack in a high-excursion woofer, a beamforming array of five tweeters, and supports Spatial Audio and Room sensing to optimize its performance regardless of where you place it. In other words, the HomePod is a massive upgrade over the HomePod mini and is perfect for creating room-filling sound.

Alternatively, Sonos, has a plethora of products that all have Airplay 2 and are HomeKit-compatible. You can purchase the Sonos One, Sonos Beam, Sonos Amp, or the Sonos Ray soundbar and Sonos Roam portable speaker. The new Sonos Era 100 is another great option, as it’s built with support for AirPlay 2, and you can use Siri to play Apple Music through the Home app.

For home-theater hounds, the fourth-gen Apple TV 4K is a fantastic way to bring HomeKit to your media cave. The streaming device delivers crystal-clear 4K HDR and features Siri support. In cases where you may need a smart bridge to control your HomeKit devices, the Apple TV can do that.

Bridges

Even though there aren’t a lot of smart home systems that require bridges, they can be crucial in some cases. As you might expect from their name, bridges connect the Home app and HomeKit with a particular brand’s devices, guaranteeing compatibility. They are essential for people who want to increase the functionality of their favorite brands.

For instance, let’s look at the Wemo Bridge. It links the Home app and the Belkin Wemo brand, increasing compatibility between devices such as the Wemo Switch, Insight Smart Plug, LightSwitch, and Dimmer.

The advantage of this is that your older Wemo devices will work with your system again. The Apple TV 4K is also a terrific, trustworthy bridge for HomeKit devices.

Stay tuned for Matter

CSA

Matter, a new interoperability standard for smart home gadgets, has already started rolling out to select devices — and more are expected to follow in the coming months. In fact, the company recently revealed the new HomePod — which comes with full Matter support. Apple is one of the biggest companies on board with the technology, meaning HomeKit devices should soon be compatible with any devices that support Matter. In other words, the small HomeKit catalog will grow much larger once Matter updates are pushed to some of today’s hottest devices. A variety of Google and Amazon products have already been updated, so keep your eyes peeled as more manufacturers jump on board throughout 2023.

Apple says iOS 17.2 fixes iPhone wireless charging problems in ‘certain vehicles’

Last month, I reported that iOS 17.1.1 broke in-car wireless charging for a number of GM drivers with an iPhone 15. In today’s release notes for iOS 17.2, which will be released to everyone next week, Apple says it has solved this problem…hopefully.

Following my report last month, GM acknowledged the problems in a statement to The Verge. “We are aware of this concern and are investigating. There’s nothing they can confirm at this point,” a company spokesperson said.

Here’s what Apple’s release notes for iOS 17.2 say: “Fixes an issue that may prevent wireless charging in certain vehicles.”

Unfortunately, there aren’t any additional details about the scope of this fix. Apple doesn’t specifically mention that iOS 17.2 addresses the problem for GM drivers, but that feels like a safe assumption to make.

This is the second time Apple has had to address issues in iOS 17 specifically affecting in-car wireless chargers. iOS 17.1.1, released at the beginning of November, included a fix for wireless charging and NFC problems affecting BMW drivers.

iOS 17.2 is currently available in beta for developers and public beta users. It’s expected to be released to the general public in about a week.

Apple offers reward for musicians to use high-end audio format

Apple Inc. is offering incentives to artists and record labels to produce music using a spatial-audio technology that surrounds listeners in sound.

Starting next year, the company plans to provide added weighting to streams of songs that are mixed in Dolby Atmos technology, according to people with knowledge of matter. That could mean higher royalty payments for artists who are first to embrace the technology made by Dolby Laboratories Inc., said the people, who asked not to be identified because the change hasn't been announced.

Listeners wouldn't necessarily have to play the Atmos version of a song for artists to benefit. It only matters that the song is offered in that format. The new policy will encourage artists and labels to record and mix music with Atmos "- including older tracks.

Mixing music in Atmos is broadly affordable, according to the people, making it worthwhile for established artists and labels to participate in the hope of seeing a boost in royalties.

Apple's audio hardware, including AirPods and the HomePod, a small speaker, support Atmos playback. With more tracks available in spatial audio, consumers might want to purchase additional Apple hardware.

Apple first introduced spatial audio to Apple Music in 2021. Supported by technology from Dolby Atmos, the format attempts to more closely mimic the way music sounds in-person where it can come from various points around the listener's head.

Amazon Inc.'s Music app also offers Dolby Atmos-supported spatial audio to its users as part of their subscriptions at no extra cost. Spotify Technology SA doesn't support the format.
