Alcatel, Lucent Confirm Merger Talks

The deal could potentially create a communications powerhouse, with combined sales of more than $25 billion.

"We can confirm that Lucent and Alcatel are engaged in discussions about a potential merger of equals that is intended to be priced at market," according to a statement issued by the companies.

"There can be no assurances that any agreement will be reached or that a transaction will be consummated," according to the companies. "We will have no further comment until an agreement is reached or the discussions are terminated."

The communications market has already seen one mega-merger in 2006. Earlier this month, AT&T Inc. acquired rival BellSouth Corp. for $67 billion.

Franced-based Alcatel and U.S.-based Lucent are no strangers to each other. In 2001, the companies were on the verge of a $23 billion merger, but the talks fell apart.

Both Lucent and Alcatel have changed in significant ways since their 2001 merger attempt, in dimensions that go beyond mere contraction in size. Lucent spun off its enterprise voice products as Avaya, as well as microelectronics products in the group that later became Agere Systems Inc. Optical transport products were reduced to those emphasizing add-drop multiplexing and multi-service switching, with the highly-touted Lambda router cross-connect dropped from Lucent's portfolio.

Lucent expanded its metro routing products, first with a Juniper alliance, and later by acquiring Riverstone Networks Inc. assets from bankruptcy court, with the latter routers and switches won in a bid against Ericsson on March 20.

Alcatel pulled together a range of enterprise and metro-carrier products for Internet Protocol switching, ranging from the 1999 acquisition of Ethernet switching company Xylan, to the 2003 acquisition of service-router startup TiMetra Networks. Both companies place more emphasis on IP routing and IP Multimedia Subsystem platforms, reflecting the phasing out of time-division multiplexed technology in public networks.

Because the Lucent and Alcatel products address a smaller sector of the overall networking market, a merger may have an easier time being approved by both the U.S. Justice Department and European Union.

However, the similarity in consolidations both companies implemented in the 2001 to 2006 time frame means that a combined Alcatel-Lucent would need to prune overlaps in their product lines, particularly in DSL access multiplexers and mid-sized routers.

After spinning off from AT&T in 1996, Lucent was once a high flyer in the booming communications equipment market. But the company has fallen on hard times. In January, Lucent reported a first-quarter loss of $278 million as sales fell $21 million from a year earlier to $2.05 billion, due to the slumping China market.

Lucent lowered its fiscal 2006 year guidance, calling for revenue to increase in the low single digits rather than mid single digits as forecast previously.

Alcatel recently paid its first dividend in four years on the back of better-than-anticipated profits at almost all of its divisions, but in particular broadband access and mobile infrastructure.

Fourth-quarter profits jumped to 541 million euros ($655 million) from 466 million euros ($564 million) a year earlier. Sales rose 7.6 percent to 4.1 billion euros, and the operating margin climbed to 13.2 percent from 12 percent in the year-ago quarter.

For the year as a whole, revenues increased from 12.2 billion euros ($14.8 billion) in 2004 to 13.1 billion euros ($15.9 billion) last year.

The company said its results were helped by a turnaround in its fixed-line business on increased demand for "triple play" services that operators use to offer a mix of voice, data and video.

Loring Wirbel contributed to this story from Colorado Springs, Co.

Financial Tips for Study Abroad

The cost of living abroad will inevitably vary from student to student, based upon individual living styles, budgetary habits, personal resources, and the fluctuating currency exchange rates. Taking these factors into account, students may find it difficult to actually estimate expenditures in preparation for a program. Students should be prepared to adapt their standards of living to their surroundings, and approach the experience with a sense of financial responsibility.

Here are some financial tips to remember, in preparation for your time abroad:

Before You Go

Credit/Debit Cards
Contact your bank and credit/debit card companies to let them know you will be abroad (when and where you will be going), so that your withdrawals are not denied or your credit card cancelled. The credit card and/or debit card you plan to use while abroad must be in your name, not your parents'. (Most major lenders will, at the request of the cardholder, provide an additional card in the name of a dependent authorized to use the account.)

ATM Fees
Check with your bank for information about daily/weekly limits on withdrawals, and about fees charged for the use of foreign ATM's. When withdrawing money from an ATM abroad, you will likely be charged a fee at the foreign bank, in addition to your own bank's fee. Ask your bank before you go if they have a partnership bank in the country where you will be living; if so, you might be able to avoid ATM fees.

Foreign Currency
Some places you may be traveling do not always accept credit card as readily as in the U.S. Buy some currency to have when you arrive. You may need money to get from the airport to your accommodation or school, and changing money in airports is often more expensive than at a bank.  Communication with your bank prior to departure is important.  Check with your financial institution regarding the exchange of currency.  It is also helpful to inform your bank of your travel days for leaving and returning to the United States.

Traveler's Checks
Be aware that traveler's checks are becoming increasingly difficult to cash, especially in Europe.  They are not highly recommended as a primary or secondary source of cash on most programs.

Flights
Look for student rate flights through companies such as STA and Student Universe. These companies tend to offer cheaper rates for students and other companies may offer cheaper rates for anyone under the age of 26.

 While Abroad

Security
Be careful with purses, wallets, and backpacks, as they are easier targets for pickpockets.  Do not carry all of your money in one place, and if possible, have a secure place to store these items in your dormitory or host family, while you are not intending to use them.

Budget
Always carry your student ID and International Student Identity Card with you, as many places offer students discounts or even free admission. Keep an eye out for student rates, and remember it never hurts to ask! Try to avoid eating out during the week; cooking for yourself and/or eating with your host family will save a lot of money for weekends, travel, souvenirs, etc.

Travel
When you arrive, consider buying a long-term bus or train pass; a monthly or multiple trip pass is likely a better value than daily passes. Make a budget for travel in addition to your weekly expense budget. Be aware of the current exchange rates in the countries you plan to travel to- this can greatly affect your travel budget.

Alcatel-Lucent Targets Large Enterprise

According to Hema Ganapathy, director of large enterprise solutions marketing at Alcatel-Lucent, the new and enhanced portfolio, called Corporate Communications Solutions for Large Enterprises, targets a number of network transitions such as globalization, virtualization and centralization and offers a way to converge the networks to integrate applications with business process to fulfill Alcatel-Lucent's "dynamic enterprise" vision by aligning networks, people, process and knowledge.

"This is part of their continued investment in the enterprise," Ganapathy said, adding that the new developments are mostly in response to customer requests.

Alcatel-Lucent's renewed enterprise focus has paid off. Ganapathy said in the last two years the Paris-based communications giant has brought on more than 5,000 new enterprise customers and the average deal size has grown 20 percent or more. In addition, services revenue is up both for partners and Alcatel-Lucent, increasing more than 30 percent over the last two years.

The new portfolio centers around four key areas: building IP networks for convergence, providing collaborative tools regardless of location, tying together unified communications and business process, and connecting knowledge through Web 2.0 applications and realtime communications.

The update includes the new OmniSwitch 9000E, which has been designed for high-capacity deployments, scalability and virtualization with multivirtual routing and forwarding to enable hardware consolidation and reduce power consumption. The 9000E brings switching to the data center and enables the partitioning of applications and users across the network. It can chop power consumption by making a single routing switch work as several routers that serve different applications or groups. The 9000E is available in 10- and 18-slot configurations.

Alcatel-Lucent also added the new OmniPCX Enterprise 9.0, its interactive communications solutions that combine traditional telephone functions with support for Internet telephony and multimedia, including a Web softphone, unified communications applications, messaging and personal assistant applications. The new release is designed for secure, scalable, centralized architecture capable of serving 100,000 users. The system includes a SIP controller and expanded SIP trunking to enable the addition of new applications and SIP device management.

For the branch office, Alcatel-Lucent unveiled the OmniAccess 5510 router, a unified services gateway integrating network services, voice calling, WAN connectivity, VPN and intrusion prevention and detection.

The company also updated its OmniTouch Unified Communication Solution with release 5.1 and the OmniTouch 8600 My Instant Communicator, its unified messaging and communications client, which now includes multisession collaboration, mobile device integration and support for third-party unified communications applications such as Microsoft Office Communicator and IBM Sametime and Lotus Notes.

For the contact center, Alcatel-Lucent unveiled OmniTouch Contact Center Premium and Standard Release 9.0, along with the latest Contact Center Teamer Applications, to add new flexibility and cost savings. The solutions let agents quickly access back-office expertise by adding functions such as text to speech and voice, fax and e-mail integration, Ganapathy said.

Ganapathy added that the solutions encourage knowledge sharing internally between customers, partners and suppliers by including open APIs and allowing third-party integration.

"We have had a very active development program around voice and data and will continue to innovate and invest in these areas going forward," Ganapathy said.

For channel partners, the new portfolio opens up the potential to integrate new products into existing environments and offers opportunities to provide installation and maintenance services.

"Partners can develop a fully streamlined architecture, Ganapathy said.

Craig Walker, head of Alcatel-Lucent's medium enterprise solutions unit, added that the new solutions also open the door for VARs to diversify their offerings.

"VARs are ready to do more than just IP, more than just security, more than just telephony," he said, adding that Alcatel-Lucent is launching new technology acquisition programs, pre- and post-sales training and professional services around the new solutions. "It opens up access to this technology, not just for traditional partners, but new types of partners. They have the ability to take these partners out of their comfort zone and leverage their expertise in new areas."

Programs

Program Details
ESF Short-Term Programs Travel abroad with an ESF faculty member and your classmates! Most short-term courses are between one to three weeks in length and take place over spring or summer break.
ESF Exchange Programs Spend a semester or summer abroad with one of ESF's university partners.
ESF Partner Study Abroad Study abroad for a winter, summer, or semester with one of ESF's recommended study abroad providers, any other SUNY institution or through another study abroad program provider. Many of these programs are immersive or field-based opportunities. Short-term, summer, and semester programs are all available!

Quick Tips

Before researching programs, think about your goals for education abroad. What type of experience are you hoping to have and what are you most interested in learning? What type of opportunities do you have limited access to in Syracuse and how might you gain those abroad? Use these questions to help guide you to better understand what it is you want out of your international experience and how you might be able to find a program that fits those criteria.

In addition to thinking about what is important to you, take some time to recognize what is not important to you. When choosing a education abroad program, it can be easier to find a "perfect" match if you understand what you are willing to compromise. Are financials the most the important piece to you? Specific classes for your major? Perhaps a research course in a specific field? Rank the things that are most important to you so they can help you find that "perfect" opportunity.

You never know where you might find recommendations, advice or input. Ask your classmates, professors, advisors, parents, guardians, coaches, etc. You never know what you might discover. Don't forget to visit OIE as well – they serve as the repository for all of the different opportunities in front of you and can help guide you when you're not sure where to even start.
