In a nutshell, BCAA supplements claim to help strengthen endurance during workouts, minimize muscle fatigue and support healthy weight control. exact 2019 research suggests the positive effects of BCAAs on muscular health are possibly due to their ability to stimulate muscle protein synthesis after strenuous movement activity. Still, the same research explains BCAA supplementation alone—absent of the consumption of other essential amino acids—is not enough to sustain maximum protein synthesis, suggesting a proper diet of high quality protein may be even more important to muscular health than supplementing with BCAAs alone . While a 2021 meta-analysis of studies on male participants in Nutrients did find an association between BCAA supplementation and decreased muscle soreness, every study used had less than 50 participants . The efficacy of BCCAs and muscle soreness requires more research, especially when it comes to a more complex participant pool and the fact that this data point is always self-reported and can vary, which can make it difficult to assess. Research around weight loss and BCAA supplementation follows the same pattern; there are some positive findings, but the subject warrants much larger studies. According to a smaller 2021 study in Nutrients, when paired with a moderate protein hypocaloric diet (i.e a high protein diet), BCAA supplementation led to a higher chance of achieving weight loss for those already living with obesity . While there are many BCAA supplements on the market, the lack of large, high-quality studies on their benefits means that you should talk with your registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) before starting yourself on a BCAA regime to make sure it’s the right supplement for you—and will actually help you with your specific goals. In the survey, Linksys and its closest competitor, D-Link, scored slightly higher overall marks than Cisco among solution providers with $5 million or more in annual sales. But when solution providers of all sizes were taken into account, Cisco beat its competitors handily in all technology and channel program areas. Linksys' corporate solution provider partners will be integrated into Cisco's channel programs, said Victor Tsao, CEO and president of Linksys. That should be good news for Linksys partners given what solution providers had to say about Cisco in the Channel Champions survey. The vendor won by the largest margin in the area of support over project life, and partners also gave Cisco Full Marks for keeping them informed of product line and channel program changes. Tsao told CRN that Linksys, based here, will be treated as an independent division of Cisco--the first time the vendor, which has bought more than 80 companies, has decided to do that. Cisco CEO John Chambers wants Linksys to continue focusing on consumer and SOHO markets and to keep its own brand, Tsao said. Corporate Linksys products, however, will be sold through the Cisco channel, which means that Linksys will not develop its own channel programs, he said. One of the reasons Cisco wants to keep Linksys independent is that Cisco follows more of a build-to-order business model and its products typically have a gross margin of 70 percent, Tsao said. That compares with Linksys products, which typically are stocked on store shelves and have a gross margin of 30 percent, he said. Linksys boasts an extensive line of routers and other equipment used in home networks. That market has become an increasingly lucrative space for solution providers as high-speed Internet connections drive the convergence of networked IT solutions in homes. "Fueled by consumer broadband adoption, the home-networking space has experienced mass market acceptance," said Chambers in a statement. Linksys is owned by Tsao and his family. "At this stage of their growth, merging with Cisco makes a lot of sense," Tsao said. "We can take advantage of technologies from Cisco to make some cool new products. The market is maturing so there is some consolidation, and this will help us with international expansion." Chinese equipment provider Huawei Technologies Co. has been struggling to overcome data privacy and security concerns casting a shadow around its telecommunications products, but Huawei's pain could be Cisco's gain, according to JP Morgan. Increased scrutiny on a global level around the security of telecommunications products made by Huawei could serve as a headwind for Cisco, which manufactures routers, servers, and software, in international markets as other countries ease up on their use of Huawei, according to a note from JP Morgan senior analyst Samik Chatterjee on Friday. Huawei had a tough 2018. Political pressure over alleged Chinese espionage efforts eroded reported deals that the company had in place with U.S.-based carrier giants, including AT&T and Verizon, to sell its phones. In December, Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou was accused of misleading financial institutions about the connection between Huawei and an unofficial subsidiary that allegedly did business in Iran as recently as four years ago, despite U.S. trade sanctions in place against the Middle Eastern country. [Related: Cisco CEO Robbins: Partners Drive Digital Transformation Success] The United States has moved to block use of Huawei equipment by domestic service providers for 5G network buildouts, but it's not the only country that's toying with the idea of blacklisting the Chinese firm. Countries such as Germany, France, Belgium, Japan, and the United Kingdom also have come forward with concerns about Huawei's presence within its telecom infrastructure. Australia blocked both Huawei and ZTE from supplying equipment to the country's 5G network, and New Zealand also banned the use of Huawei equipment for its own 5G network buildout. Huawei doesn't have a large presence in the U.S., so the move to block domestic carriers from deploying its hardware won't open the door to much more additional opportunity in the U.S., Chatterjee said. Instead, Cisco should be placing its bets on the global opportunity. "A greater opportunity lies in the international markets (EMEA and APAC ex-China) and they expect companies with established global presence (primarily Cisco and Ciena amongst others) to be well positioned to benefit from a pullback in business wins relative to 5G networks for Huawei," Chatterjee wrote. CRN has reached out to Huawei for comment. In the short-term, supplying networking gear to other countries as a result of the move away from Huawei could indeed be a good opportunity for Cisco, said Gary Berzack, CTO at eTribeca, a New York City-based Cisco partner. "Cisco only has to grab a few extra percentage points to make a dramatic and positive change," he said. At the same time, however, Cisco is in the process of trying to change the "battleground," Berzack said. "Cisco is trying to get off heavy metal and into cloud, and Huawei isn't currently competing with them head-to-head on that side," he added. Cisco in its latest quarter generated net revenues of $13.1 billion, up 8 percent year-over-year. Earnings increased to $0.75 per share, up 23 percent compared to the same year-ago quarter. At the same time, net income for the quarter hit $3.5 billion, an increase of 48 percent compared to the same period one year ago. Cisco's stock climbed up 3.43 percent by early Friday afternoon eastern time. Vipe Desai is a leader with decades of marketing, branding and governance experience who has served on more than a dozen boards. It is not easy to run a nonprofit business — that’s a common fact a lot of people are aware of. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a brilliant junior board or, as I like to refer to it, an associate board, that functions at a professional level to help drive your mission and programs. An associate board may be new to some of you but, generally, it’s a body of individuals who support a nonprofit's official board and leadership. It's great for individuals who want to gain experience and expertise in board governance, project management, budgeting and fundraising but may not have all of the requirements in order to do so on the official board. By being involved in the associate board these young and emerging leaders are able to gain the knowledge and experience that may be valuable in their career journey. An associate board is also a great development program for potential board members for your organization or to help them get onto other NPO boards. Does every single organization need an associate board? Maybe, maybe not, but an associate board is another way for nonprofits to bring a variety of talented young people together with a variety of skills around the common goal to serve the organization. I serve as chairman of the board to a 45-year-young community-based organization that educates 100,000 children, teachers, parents and visitors annually through over 60 marine science and maritime history programs. The campus is well known for its ocean education center that offers in-depth marine science, maritime history and outdoor education programs. Trying to put together a great associate board can be a challenging task, so here are a few tips that I’ve collected during my experience that other NPO leaders might find helpful: 1. Keep it local. By keeping your associate board members local, you can tap into the community with more potential for fundraising and advocacy. 2. Collaborate within your community. Many local businesses are interested in working closely with community NPOs while giving their employees an opportunity to support the community. Community-based collaboration offers nonprofit leaders a targeted and meaningful opportunity to further their missions. 3. Look for unique skill sets. This is good to remember when looking for a well-rounded associate board, ensuring that the people you choose for your board meet the expectations and skills you require. Do you need a financial expert? A social media manager? A marketer? All of these things need to be considered before you go out looking for a team. 4. Identify the requirements needed for board participation. Are they going to have to dedicate a lot of time to this? If so, do you have a good guide for them so they have a complete understanding of what's required of them? This helps so that you’re not wasting time with people who may join and then realize that it is not for them. Are they expected to attend events that are in the area? Do they need to donate some of their own money to the cause? Now, if you can get a recruitment plan in place for your associate board, I’m confident your organization will be able to function at a higher level. I truly believe that many nonprofits could excel with a good associate board because of the combined experience and each individual's desire to be there. These boards are usually made up of passionate people driven toward a greater purpose. All of their associate board members for the Ocean Institute are so passionate about their environment and its sea life that they want to make a positive impact on it. They have helped spearhead successful fundraising initiatives, fresh partnerships, new events and programs that have helped us to reach new donors and more students. Associate board candidates offer much-needed skills for nonprofits that include branding, communications, digital marketing, marketing, social media, public relations, web and graphic design, strategic partnerships, technology and more. It does take a lot of hard work and patience when starting a new associate board, but once it's up and running, a talented volunteer board can create exponential value to any organization. One great hidden resource you can leverage to find members for your associate board is the Private Directors Association, where I’m also a member. Here you can find a well-qualified and eager list of candidates to serve on your associate board, and many can also be bumped up to your genuine governing board. If your organization is looking for new and exciting ways to boost and grow fundraising efforts and community engagement, an associate board might just be what you're looking for. Building out a team of passionate professionals who are connected to your mission will serve your organization well while also developing leaders to become productive members of your community. Associate boards can be great investments. The added value of building a non-governing associate board can serve to cultivate the next generation of talented leaders, build a pipeline for the organization’s governing board, bring additional expertise into the organization and Boost the diversity of the organization’s leadership.
