Parents in Delta State have protested the high cost of the Common Entrance Examination, as fixed by the Delta State Government for primary school pupils seeking admission to secondary schools.

The parents, as our correspondent gathered, on Thursday, asked the government to explain why pupils in various public schools were subjected to pay the sums of N7,000, N10,000 and N12,000 as registration fees for the examination, while external pupils were made to register for N17,000.

One of the parents, Mrs Okwokwo, who spoke with our correspondent said, “I paid N10,000 to register my child for the common entrance examination. After paying N10,000, I also paid N500 for lesson fees and N100 for consumable. I don’t know what they mean by consumable. I also paid N150 for test and they are now asking us to pay N400 for report card.

“Government says it is free education for public schools, but what we are seeing now is  a different thing.”

Findings also revealed that some of the private schools who were yet to be approved common entrance exam centres were collecting N7,000 from their pupils and merged them public school pupils, an agreement reached between the heads of both schools.

Several calls and text massages to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta State, Mr Chedu Ebie, were made but he refused to pick his calls nor reply the text messages.

“Our continued commitment to keep Notre Dame education affordable will now include the addition of three merit based scholarships offered to academically strong incoming freshmen,” said Notre Dame High School President Mary Liz Fitzpatrick in the statement. “The awarding of these scholarships will recognize their hard work and commitment to becoming a member of the Notre Dame community.”

The selections for the scholarships will be based on the student’s scores in the High School Placement Test (HSPT) or the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT), as well as an essay submitted by the students. The scholarships are open to all applicants and will be renewable yearly for students who maintain a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

The essays that must be submitted by the applicants will be in response to one of two prompts, according to the statement.

Essay Prompt A: Parents and teachers tell us to “do our best.” How do you know when you are doing the best you can do? How can being told to “do your best” be a challenge?

Essay Prompt B: “I dwell in possibility.” – Emily Dickinson. What does it mean for a young adult in 2019 to “dwell in possibility?”

Finalists will be chosen from the essays and will then participate in student interviews with administrators and faculty members. The winning applicants will be chosen out of those interviews.

All applicants must have their student scores and student essays submitted to the Notre Dame Admissions Office by Feb. 2. The students may also email their scores and essays to Mrs. Laura Sarubbi at sarubbi@ndnj.org.

The three students who are awarded the scholarships will be notified in writing by March 10.

And for SC/ ST/ OBC/ Specially Abled Persons (SAP) category candidates, the age limit was below 22 years of age as on July 01, 2019.

As we know, as there is no age limit for CLAT exam so a person can sit for any numbers of attempts in this exam. This means a person is allowed to write as many attempts as he/ she wants to write. The Supreme court has given a free hand to all the candidates in this regard.

By checking CLAT eligibility a candidate can ensure that whether he is eligible for the exam or not.  He can also know about the benefits given to certain candidates such a reservation, fee relaxation, relaxations given to differently-abled people.
