"Design now is warmer, materials are richer, and furnishings are more expressive. Spatially, the floor plan and room configuration continue to lean toward an open flexible home. Yet, within these more modern floor plans, people want materials that can age: metals with a living finish, stone with some animation, and objects with a history and patina. When purchasing is as simple as a swipe of a finger, people are hungry for the unusual and found. This dialogue between new and old gives modern architecture a richness and warmth that is timeless and livable.

"People today are also traveling a lot, and they want their home to bring the same sense of healing and peace they find on vacation. Mediation rooms, home spas, and yoga rooms are starting to find their way into our projects. People realize that they can bring luxury and nurturing attention into their everyday life, and these rooms are no longer just for resorts. In the future, interest in healthy homes will increase and guide our projects. Owners are already more educated on the health benefits and dangers within their home, and they’re looking to their design team to deliver thoughtful and healthy solutions."

After working in San Francisco at various studios, Luke and Ani Wade launched their own practice called Wade Design Architects. Ani Wade brings a sharp clarity and sense of organization to the firm’s projects, which often tend toward a clean, California farmhouse style.

"One thing we are seeing (and wish there was more of) is a trend towards architecture that is older or made of older, reused structures. More and more clients are purchasing homes that have some history to them, that have inherent qualities that cannot be replicated. They're asking us to restore or modify the existing structures to suit their needs. People are really looking for a sense of history and depth in their homes, instead of just wanting something shiny and new. Very currently, our clients are asking for buildability. There is also a desire for structures that have permanence and feel protective, but which maintain a strong connection to the outdoors. Much of our work is in California’s Wine Country, or otherwise located in ‘wildland interface’ areas. These are areas that have a strong relation to nature and the great outdoors, and which sadly have been affected by fires in the last few years. People are really feeling the effect of the fires, but they are not running away from nature — there is a strong longing to be close to it, yet to stay safe and feel protected.

"I wish I had a crystal ball so that I could see clients’ desires in the future. But my guess is, things are not going to change drastically moving forward. There are inherent qualities about good design and architecture that people will always be drawn to: natural light that is balanced and doesn't make you feel like you are indoors, an ease of flow from space to space, a desire to be held and protected, and a connection to natural materials in our homes and in the objects we interact with daily."

Alabama-based architect Jeffrey Dungan of Jeffrey Dungan Architects was inspired as a child by the southern countryside. His work offers an unconventional interpretation of classical and traditional styles.

"Trends come and go, but elegance and timelessness never go out of style. I think wise design is always quietly in the background — some people will always run from fad to fad. I'm really excited about things that continue to delight us long after the novelty wears off, and I think in this day when 'design' is so conspicuously and visually accessible, the smart money is headed towards the classic. People are looking for an elegant, quiet place that enables them to recover and recharge, rather than another stage that they are expected to perform on. They want a place that gives them that ever-vanishing and rare feeling, called 'peace.' It's not about making a big show, my clients have achieved a great deal and this is for them, their forever home. It's personal, and it's for them and their families and friends — so in that way it's always different in the details and selections. The world is also shrinking. Houses will continue to get smaller, and the desire for quality will continue to increase in the spaces, materials, and experience."

Oakland-based architecture firm Verner Architects creates residential and small-scale commercial projects mainly in the Bay Area. Stephen Verner, principal at Verner Architects, earned his undergraduate degree in engineering before eventually becoming an architect.

"Prefabrication and advanced fabrication are two major trends we are excited about and currently pursuing. While prefab is certainly not new, it has been slow to take off. We are seeing this change toward prefab especially with labor costs in our area and the need for faster project delivery, particularly in the wildfire-damaged areas. Advanced fabrication, such as 3D printing and CNCing, is an emerging field which has always been present on larger high-profile commercial projects, but it’s now possible to use it for residential projects due to its increased prevalence. These methods enable us to create designs in our studio, then directly deal with the fabricator and their equipment to generate a finished product ready to be installed on site.

"Aside from outstanding design, a trend new and old, we are seeing more clients look to maximize square footage in both renovations and new construction projects. With housing and construction prices at their current levels, our clients desire to maximize their investment by increasing living area. One offshoot of this is 'granny flats', or accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in planning lingo. Where permitted by local planning code, we are creating separate living units, typically studios or one-bedrooms, within the existing home footprint or detached in the backyard. While many clients use these spaces as a home office or gym, they are permitted if their situation changes or they decide to sell. Another request we are getting is a renewed interest in food-producing gardens. Rather than an afterthought, the garden placement and size is a new element for us to consider in our site planning."

New York design studio Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects focuses on projects in the Hamptons and along the eastern American coast. Michael Lomont, partner at the firm, previously worked for an architecture company that specialized in churches and religious spaces, and he brings a modern, sustainable vision to his projects.

"In our work, we see clients asking for thoughtful, sometimes unconventional, and sustainable buildings — and they’re not so hung up on size, style, or preconceived architectural notions. We really enjoy the challenge of coming up with unique solutions on all of our projects, whether small, large, residential, or commercial. It seems that as real estate in seasonal locations has gotten much more expensive, clients are now asking for houses that can accommodate grown children and sometimes grandchildren. Well-designed spaces should be able to expand and contract depending on the number of occupants, while maintaining a high level of comfort, functionality and architectural merit. As the ability to work remotely has gotten much easier and more acceptable within many industries, we are seeing clients wanting to build highly custom houses in historically seasonal locations, which enable them to spend more time with their families doing whatever it is they love to do."

Founder of SUBU Design Architecture in Los Angeles, May Sung was born in Taiwan and raised in California. With degrees from University California, Berkeley and Harvard University, she was also a Fulbright Scholar in Hong Kong. Her world travels and love of art inspire her designs.

"I’ve noticed that there’s more flexibility now within design to suit the changing family and individual living structure.  There’s no one cookie-cutter style; instead I’m designing to fit the individual and family’s personalities. Aesthetic direction is changing. People are more willing to experiment to express their heritage, background, unique family structure, or just individual personality. It’s no longer about the architect or designer’s ego, or the old Howard Roark archetype from The Fountainhead. For instance, we created a green wall with the profile of Ganesh’s trunk — Ganesh is an elephant-headed god in Hinduism — to reflect the client’s Indian heritage (project pictured here). And I’ve used a lantern fixture as a representation of the client’s Chinese background.

"With social media and the Internet, clients are becoming savvier and more educated. It’s exciting to have a more collaborative process, to be able to share and discuss ideas together, instead of just the old-fashioned way of one-sided presentation. With an aging society and boomerang children who live with their parents after college, I see that spaces need to be more flexible. There is no longer a need for the traditional structure of a living, family, dining, bed, bath, and breakfast rooms that suits a single purpose."

Gonzalez-Abreu | Alas Architects (GAA) in Coral Gables, Florida is an award-winning firm that specializes in both architecture and interior design. Working with the firm’s other partner (her husband), Ana Maria Alas has honed a grand, colonial style that’s also distinctly modern.

"We keep on seeing more green buildings evolving throughout Miami, which is experiencing a growing construction boom, and our residential clients are stressing fitness, comfort, and beauty as important components of body and mind health. Clients are prioritizing exercise in the comfort and convenience of their homes, and these rooms deserve the attention to detail previously given to more public rooms such as a kitchen. There is also a renaissance in creative bathroom design, where clients want to 'unplug'. It seems as if our tech-addicted society is finally realizing that you have to indulge in personal luxuries for your personal wellbeing.

"The motivation for an overall project is slowly moving away from budget and functionality, and incorporating a client’s overall health. We are now living in a global age and experiencing a rise in social media, and even though it is now easier than ever to get inspiration from furniture and accessory websites that promise to deliver 'the look,' our clients are also recognizing and valuing the need of design services. This new attitude will keep influencing design trends and pose new challenges, which GAA will be excited to interpret and translate into the built environment."

Based outside New Orleans, Ken Tate designs luxurious homes that are influenced by classicism, rather than modernism. He is interested in a range of traditional styles, from Greco-Roman to French colonial and more.

"In residential architecture and interiors, we’re seeing much more interest in decorative fabrics wallpaper, and modern art, as well as a much more extreme mix of modern and classical. I, for one, welcome anything that is not boring, although in the wrong hands, this new trend of extreme mixing can be a disaster. But I do admire anyone who tries. And I love it when done well. The Europeans are often better at this than we are in the States, although certain American designers like Richard Shapiro of Studiolo are brilliant at it. Clients are also asking for much more quality in their cabinetry, hardware, recessed lighting, and detailing in general, which we have always provided anyway. Many clients are also wanting plaster for interior walls, and previously we had to ask them if we could specify it. One would think that steel window and door-wall systems had never existed until seven to eight years ago. Now they are almost required by new clients! However, I will only use them if they make sense in the context of the design and if they improve the overall aesthetic. I never follow the herd in that regard.

"I expect all of my future clients to be intelligent, informed, visionary, have great individual style, and be decisive decision makers. Their needs and desires for a design will be reflected in these attributes. I also expect that they will have a keen interest in work by important artists."
