Pure Storage is the company most associated with the current disruption in the storage world. Pure was a very early innovator with all-flash arrays, and has moved faster than nearly all of the storage technology companies in deploying NVMe technology inside the arrays. Speaking as one who used to compete against Pure, I can say that nobody in the industry likes going head-to-head against the company in a deal. This week Pure Storage continued its disruptive innovation, delivering its first foray in the very hot data protection market and another first in the NVMe technology world.

Objects in the cloud

Data protection and backup, once considered the more pedestrian of alleyways in the IT world, is one of the hottest topics in IT this year. Whether it’s ransomware, increased compliance requirements, flexibility needed by DevOps teams, or other organizational needs, the ability to archive data and rapidly retrieve those archives is critical to IT operations.

The challenge of backup is one of speed and density. Enterprise data is both large and dynamic. The time that it takes to back up or restore data can become a business challenge. This challenge is amplified in the cloud world, where storage and bandwidth costs compound with data transfer rates.

The industry has coalesced around Amazon S3 object storage as the natural target for data protection. All of the major data protection and backup providers support S3 objects. Most of the newer NAS products have some flavor of S3 semantics exposed for on-site object storage.

Now, though, Pure Storage is stepping directly into this market with the Pure Storage ObjectEngine. Last year, Pure Storage acquired StorReduce, a small technology company with stellar data deduplication capabilities. At the time, I expected that technology would be leveraged into Pure’s overall density story. Instead, Pure combined the StorReduce technology with Pure’s industry-leading all-flash array technology to deliver an object storage appliance for the hybrid-cloud world, that dramatically outperforms its nearest competitor.

Comparing ObjectEngine with the Dell EMC Corporation Data Domain DD9800 nicely illustrates this benefit. While the Data Domain product delivers 1.5PB of storage over 3 full racks, the Pure Storage solution achieves the same capabilities in just one-third of a rack. A full rack ObjectEngine solution delivers an insane 2PB of object storage.

This isn’t simply an on-site backup solution. Pure’s ObjectEngine has a cloud component, where data is deduplicated on the local ObjectEngine, interpreted by Pure’s ObjectEngine cloud instance, and locked away into an Amazon S3 bucket for long-term archival storage.

Pure delivers a stellar solution for data protection with the Pure Storage ObjectEngine. It provides unprecedented storage density with industry-leading integration with public cloud. The data protection market is hot this year, and many of Pure’s competitors are shipping products that are getting long in the tooth. I expect that we’ll see Dell EMC and NetApp respond over the coming months, but Pure has set a high bar.

NVMe-over-Fabric as fast as DAS

The storage interconnect world is changing. As all-flash storage arrays become more prevalent for hot and mid-tier data, NVMe has also become the in-box interconnect of choice. Designed for flash and replacing traditional disk interfaces which added latency to the I/O path, NVMe has democratized flash performance. The natural extension of NVMe is expanding its use as an interconnect between storage arrays, or storage arrays and servers. NVMe-over-fabric is a set of standards that define how this would work.

This is a world that has been long-served by Fibre Channel SAN and, more recently, iSCSI over ethernet. SAN requires expensive dedicated hardware that mirrors the capabilities of a data center ethernet network. This made sense in the days when ethernet was slow. As ethernet sped up, iSCSI become a practical solution for moving block storage data across more mainstream networking. Today ethernet can deliver transfer rates and latencies that rival most dedicated SANs. Deploying an intelligent NIC into this environment provides a basis for a compelling storage interconnect.

Pure Storage was an early provider of high-performance storage technology and has consistently been at the forefront. The company was the first with NVMe-attached RAM in 2015, first with an NVMe all-flash array in 2017, first with an NVMe all-flash shelf in 2018, and, as of this week, the first with an NVMe-over-ethernet solution.

The Pure Storage DirectFlash Fabric promises to deliver direct-attached storage capabilities across RDMA-enabled ethernet. Pure’s DirectFlash Fabric demonstrates latencies of 100-300 microseconds, with is better than half of that measured with Fibre Channel and iSCSI, and right in the mix with SCSI DAS.

NVMe-over-Fabric is still in its embryonic phase. Embryonic as it is, it will become the dominant interconnect for storage in the data center. While other vendors are protecting their legacy and targeting NVMe-over-FC or NVMe-over-InfiniBand first, Pure Storage is putting a stake in the ground that will well-serve greenfield deployments and those wanting to move away from burdensome legacy hardware. Pure Storage DirectFlash Fabric is an exciting milestone as the industry continues its march into the all-flash future.

Our take

The public cloud is now a part of the IT landscape. When it comes to backup, data protection, or even compute-heavy workloads, there are very few enterprises not embracing the cloud in some form today. Cloud is good—it delivers flexibility and economic benefits that lower the cost of IT, while still delivering sufficient quality-of-service to the enterprise.

Cloud is also bad. Workloads and data that exist outside of the datacenter also have the unfortunate side-effect of existing outside of a realm that delivers revenue to hardware-centric technology providers. Cloud creates the classic “innovator’s dilemma” for hardware OEMs, forcing uncomfortable questions about the value that these OEMs add in this world.

Pure Storage is embracing the new realities that cloud computing brings to IT practitioners. Last year Pure demonstrated the depth of this embrace when it released its Pure Storage Cloud Block Store, delivering the functionality of its physical array into a hosted cloud solution. No other storage vendor, with the clear exception of IBM Corporation, is delivering this level of functionality into the cloud.

Beyond cloud, Pure Storage’s DirectFlash Fabric continues the dramatic evolution of high-performance storage architecture in the data center. It will take a long time for NVMe-over-fabric to become pervasive, but it is exactly the innovative early adopters like Pure Storage and Pure’s customers who will drive that path to widespread adoption.

IBM, which arguably has the largest remaining big iron server business in the world, is one step closer to making systems based on its own Power processors peers to the Xeon-based machinery that utterly dominates its IBM Cloud public cloud. With the latest moves, IBM now has scale-out and scale-up systems based on a mix of its Power8 and Power9 processors available for rent, but these systems are only for the moment running its own AIX variant of Unix and its own IBM i proprietary operating system.

It would not take more than a few minutes to load up Linux partitions on the machinery IBM is starting to rollout in several of its datacenters. So don’t think for a minute that IBM is not going to eventually add support for Linux on this public Power infrastructure that it is rolling out. To be honest, it is a bit of a wonder that it is not happening concurrent with the rollout of AIX and IBM i on the cloud.

IBM has been providing hosting and outsourcing services for rent for six decades now, so it is a bit much to call it a newcomer to selling cloudy infrastructure. The company has dabbled with selling capacity with utility pricing before. Remember the whole Supercomputing On-Demand effort back in January 2003? This included clusters of systems – people called them grids back then – based on both X86 and Power architectures, with capacity rented, not bought, and it preceded the launch of Amazon Web Services by more than three years. But it is fair to say that Big Blue did not respond quickly enough to build its own public cloud – neither did other system makers and outsourcers, to be fair – and that is why to get back in the game it had to spend around $2 billion to acquire SoftLayer, a hosting provider that moved into virtualized and bare metal clouds that had amassed 25,000 customers and a fleet of over 100,000 servers in 13 datacenters when IBM bought it back in June 2013.

SoftLayer had built its own cloud controller and used the commercial XenServer hypervisor from Citrix Systems to chop up Supermicro servers into virtual slices. IBM sold off its System x X86-based server business to Lenovo a year later for $2.3 billion, so there was no reason to move SoftLayer, now known as the IBM Cloud over to System x gear. And the Lenovo cash paid back most of the SoftLayer bill. IBM invested another $1.2 billion in SoftLayer right after the deal was done, and had hoped to build out 40 cloudy datacenters, with hundreds of thousands of machines and millions of virtual machines. We do not know if IBM met these goals, and it doesn’t talk about them anymore in this way.

It took a surprisingly long time for IBM to get Power-based machines on its public cloud, and it is clear in hindsight that Big Blue was waiting until its Power8 servers were fully ramped and it came up with a more cogent Linux strategy on Power Systems machines to really push Power architectures from the SoftLayer cloud, which it launched in May 2016. The four bare metal instances that debuted then based on its Power Systems LC machines are still available today, based on the same single-socket “Habanero” system created by Tyan, with slightly different prices and with the same configurations that were available nearly three years ago. These Power Systems LC machines support Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Canonical Ubuntu Server operating systems and the PowerKVM hypervisor, but only Ubuntu Server was available on the cloudy versions on what is now known as the IBM Cloud. The Power instances are available in IBM Cloud datacenters in San Jose, Dallas, Washington DC, Sao Paulo, London, and Sydney.

IBM has not, as yet, offered cloudy instances of machines running AIX and IBM i, and it has similarly not offered bigger iron – both of which it sorely needed to do to actually offer potential customers the same class of machines on the cloud as they have used in their datacenters.

With today’s launch, IBM is getting a bit closer, but it is a little disconcerting that IBM Cloud is only offering SAP HANA in-memory databases atop Linux for running S/4 HANA applications on four-socket and eight-socket “Haswell” Xeon E7-4800 and E7-8800 servers. IBM’s enterprise-class Power E950 and Power E980 machines, which use Power9 processors and which scale to four or sixteen sockets, respectively, can run circles around this old Haswell iron. IBM’s Global Technology Services does plenty of outsourcing deals on such iron for running SAP HANA, which is a huge driver of the Power Systems business these days, but that is not the same thing as having true utility pricing. (We will get into SAP HANA on Power in a separate article, because IBM has some unique advantages that it is leveraging well here, and it is taking on Hewlett Packard Enterprise for the mantle in this enterprise arena.) IBM does plan to offer SAP HANA on the new Power cloud instances, so that implies that IBM is going to support Linux underneath it. And that also implies that it can support Linux – and we presume Red Hat Enterprise Linux, considering that IBM is spending $34 billion to acquire Red Hat – on these Power slices on the IBM Cloud.

IBM is chopping up two different types of Power machines on the most recent public cloud, and they are far more useful than the single-socket machines that came out three years ago. In one instance, the Power S922, which is a two-socket machine, is equipped with a pair of ten-core Power9 chips that have a base speed of 2.8 GHz and that run up to 3.9 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. This server tops out at 4 TB of capacity using 2.67 GHz DDR4 memory sticks, and it seems highly unlikely that IBM has configured it this way given the cost of main memory these days. Steve Sibley vice president and offering manager for the Cognitive Systems division at the company, tells The Next Platform that IBM is allowing customers to scale from 8 GB to 64 GB of memory per core, which implies IBM is using much cheaper 32 GB memory sticks. Customers who need a larger memory footprint – they can double or quadruple this – can pay an incremental price and IBM will load up some Power S922 machines with more capacity. The Power S922 servers are configured with disk and flash storage, and the instances can have anywhere from 10 GB to 2 TB of capacity on either, sold in 10 GB chunks.

IBM is also selling slices on a Power E880 servers based on Power8 chips and is planning on adding slices on Power E980 machines that are based on Power9 processors. Both machines scale from four to sixteen sockets, and in the case of the Power E880, IBM has set up systems that use the ten-core Power8 chip that spins at 4.19 GHz to deliver systems that scale up to 160 cores in a single system image. The memory and storage on this cloudy Power E880 scales the same as on the Power S922, with 8 GB to 64 GB per core for memory and up to 2 TB of disk and/or flash storage scalable in 10 GB increments.

Both types of Power Systems on the IBM Cloud are back-ended by capacity on IBM’s Storwize V7000 disk arrays, which link to the servers over Fibre Channel links. IBM installs the PowerVM hypervisor and either AIX or IBM i (and presumably Linux in the case of SAP HANA) and then customers maintain everything from the operating system and on up from there while IBM manages from the firmware on down.

Here is the set of features that IBM is rolling out for these Power instances:

IBM has been beta testing this cloudy Power infrastructure in its Washington DC data center since the middle of January. By March, IBM will have machines up and running in its Dallas datacenter as well and it will allow production workloads to make use of them. Somewhere in the second quarter it will roll out Power System slices in its Frankfurt datacenter in Germany, with other geographies to follow. It is not clear when the Power E980 will be brought to the cloud, but what we hear is that demand very high for this machine in the fourth quarter and into the first quarter that IBM wants to sell all of those machines it can to customers that are buying the whole boxes, not renting slices on them.

The pricing on the Power Systems Virtual Server on IBM Cloud has not been finalized yet, but the metering on the processor, memory, and storage is done by the hour. But Sibley likes to do math like we do here at The Next Platform, and he estimates that in like-for-like configurations, if you ran a cloud instance full out for three years it would cost somewhere between 30 percent and 40 percent more on the IBM Cloud as it would to acquire it and operate it. This is a very reasonable premium, considering IBM is paying power, cooling, datacenter, switching, and management costs. IBM is also offering hourly license fees for AIX and IBM i, the latter of which includes an integrated relational database management system. Presumably IBM’s own DB2 relational database and its WebSphere middleware stack will be available on the machines with hourly pricing, and ditto for Oracle and SAP HANA databases. And in cases where you need to demonstrate dedicated capacity – a requirement for database licensing usually – IBM can lock down a slice of a machine, or the whole thing. And finally, the Power slices running on the IBM Cloud will be provisioned using Terraform, an open source tool from HashiCorp, that is also used by the IBM Cloud Private stack, so it will be possible to move virtual machines from private to public capacity and back again if necessary.

So how will customers use this cloudy Power iron? “I think initially people will start by testing out their development and test environments and see if it can run out here,” says Sibley. “I also think we will see people using the cloud for disaster recovery for Power Systems, because while companies think it is alright to own one datacenter, they don’t want to own two. And there is also a line of business angle, too. We have one customer that is starting a new business, and they want to start it out on the cloud on Power, and maybe some day they will move it back to their datacenter and maybe they will keep it there on the cloud.”

We expect before too long IBM will be ramping up the PowerKVM hypervisor on the Power S922 machines so Linux can be supported there in a more native format, and that Linux will be added to the big iron Power E880 and Power E980 boxes using the PowerVM hypervisor. We would not be at all surprised to see the Power E950 systems running AIX and Linux appear all sliced up on the IBM Cloud, either.

Unveiled during PartnerWorld at Think in San Francisco, Big Blue rolled out new initiatives including its Watson-based collaboration engine called IBM Business Partner Connect; My PartnerWorld; new software deal registration and IBM Power Systems, LinuxONE and Z ‘In It to Win It’ incentives.

On top of this, the vendor also detailed how it was further investing in partner skills and enablement, as well as driving growth opportunities in market segments such as security and hybrid cloud.

Specifically, IBM Business Partner Connect focuses on helping partners tap into the global ecosystem to collaborate on client opportunities, develop new business and bring new solutions to market.

Meanwhile, the Watson-based engine will enable partners with complementary capabilities to find each other, get to market faster and sell more together, according to John Teltsch, general manager of partner ecosystem at IBM.

My PartnerWorld, set to launch on 15 February, aims to offer a personalised on-boarding and enablement experience, giving partners the chance to manage PartnerWorld tools and shortcuts in one place. This includes My Sales Activity (MySA), the PartnerWorld Console, Co-Marketing Centre and Business Partner Connect platform.

Additionally the new software deal registration will offer partners with priority access to special bid pricing in an effort to reduce conflict between technology providers while improving financial outcomes.

Teltsch added this was part of the vendor's ongoing transformation efforts, which it kicked off last year, to improve partner experience and profitability, including projects around channel pricing, incentives and streamlined resale authorisation.

In April last year, Big Blue, restructured its partner engagement models across the channel.

Furthermore, the IBM Power Systems, LinuxONE and Z 'In It to Win It' incentives have now been made available to partners, which also extends the incentive for IBM storage into 2019, along with deploying new demand generation tactics to drive exclusive leads.

On top of these new initiatives, the vendor is also launching an ESA co-marketing offering for partners embedding IBM technology, and across third-party marketplaces, in addition to enhancing its digital APIs amid plans to double the number of digital offerings.

"We continue to help partners on their journey to SaaS, with more than 400 as-a-service offerings, coupled with new demos, trials and incentives to accelerate growth,” Teltsch said.

IBM has also launched SaaS deal registration and P360, which is a tool allowing partners to see their client’s analytics.

Partner skills and enablement

Delving deeper, IBM also showcased its new sales enablement solution, Seismic@IBM, a tool that features sales kits, plays, presentations, use cases and other assets.

The Value Package support bundle is also being expanded into version 2.0, whereby partners can double their IBM cloud credits; provide access to a development sandbox environment; access discount vouchers for select education events and additional subscription discounts.

As a result, Teltsch said it was also doubling the number of system channel technical sellers to support partners in the field.

Going forward, a new managed services security provider program (MSSP) aims to help partners build security practices and deliver solutions in either an embedded or reseller model.

A ‘Know Your IBM’ security sales incentive will serve up reloadable IBM Rewards debit cards to partners who sell new security licenses and SaaS.

Teltsch said it has also enabled partners to build ‘Cloud Paks,’ which are enterprise-grade container software packages with guidance and step-by-step instructions for partners to quickly build with open standards that will enable hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.

“Built for Kubernetes on the IBM Cloud and IBM Cloud Private, IBM Cloud Paks are designed to accelerate time to production and improve readiness at lower cost than containers alone,” he explained.

Additionally, a new Cloud Digital Technical Engagement program will supply partners with access to technical assets focused on product demos and tutorials.

“These assets provide a deep understanding of product offerings and how they can help clients along their journey to Cloud and AI," Teltsch added. "Our new Seismic@IBM will include a link to this Cloud Digital Technical Engagement program so partners can easily access this important information while preparing for client engagements."

According to Teltsch, the new initiatives and investments were a response to the "continuous feedback" from partners and clients.

Teltsch revealed that during the past year, partners had doubled their number of specialist and expert competencies across its technology stack.

“We’ve also seen significant momentum in the number of partners building their skills and selling solutions in strategic areas like IBM Security, Cloud, IoT and Watson AI, with our second Watson Build Challenge producing more than 500 AI solutions and prototypes that run on the IBM Cloud,” Teltsch said.

During its fourth quarter results, Big Blue pointed out that its cloud business, grew 12 per cent to US$19.2 billion in 2018.

In addition, the company's cognitive software business, including its artificial intelligence platform Watson, analytics and cyber security services and is its second biggest, reported sales of US$5.46 billion, compared with analysts' expectation of US$5.25 billion.
