The LPIC - 3 exams represent the highest level of Linux certification available within the industry. This certification level includes one core exam and several other optional specialty exams that allow the senior-level Linux professional to customize his or her LPIC - 3 status. The core exam tests competency levels on a range of intermediate and advanced Linux tasks, including the planning and maintaining of a complete multiuser environment. The specialty exams cover such tasks as security, mail and messaging, high availability and virtualization, and Web and Intranet.

While career and salary information for Linux-certified professionals is not available, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that job opportunities for computer and information systems managers overall were expected to increase by 15% between 2014-2024 (www.bls.gov). The BLS also noted that the median salary for computer systems managers was $131,600 in 2015.

To maintain an active LPIC certification, Linux professionals must recertify every five years. To recertify, candidates must successfully complete the exams of only the highest level of certification sought. In addition to the three levels of LPIC certification, Linux also offers an Ubuntu certification exam set. To become an Ubuntu-certified professional, potential certification candidates must pass the two LPIC - 1 exams along with an additional Ubuntu exam. The Ubuntu exams will test the individual's ability to install, configure and maintain Ubuntu systems.
