At the end of the list, almost recursively, Wikipedia notes all these real-time enterprise communications services can be integrated with non-real-time communication services such as (drumroll, please) unified messaging (UM).

Where’s streaming in that long list of enterprise communications services? And does it fit in the real-time or non-real-time communications bucket? This article attempts to answer those two questions. Starting with the assumption that all communications matter, we will explore how streaming can unify a number of UC and UM use cases. Along the way, we will touch on a few topics, like latency and WebRTC, that deserve their own articles and expanded explanations—and get at least some coverage elsewhere in this issue of Streaming Media magazine.

Let’s first start with some insight on the intersection of streaming video and unified communications, thanks to work done by Wainhouse Research. Steve Vonder Haar, a senior analyst with Wainhouse, commissioned a study of 1,801 working adults in the United States as part of the research into UC, streaming video, and other enterprise platforms. The survey was a follow-up to an April 2016 report wherein Wainhouse Research surveyed 1,512 corporate executives to gauge demand for streaming solutions that enable one-to-many distributions of content originating from UC applications such as Skype for Business, Cisco Jabber, and IBM Sametime.

This newer 4Q 2016 Wainhouse Research “Enterprise Web Communications Survey” was designed as a true scientific survey. It had up to 380 different segmentations, with guaranteed participation in specific categories—150 from IT, 100 from professional services, 85 from financial services—as well as intentional oversamples of IT and educational participants.

Wainhouse asked which two communications channels survey participants found most effective for lead generation. In fact, as this chart shows, Facebook topped the list of multiple-choice lead generation options, with 49 percent of survey participants noting it as one of their most effective lead-generation channels, followed by YouTube at 39 percent of all participants. Traditional email was next, with LinkedIn at 21 percent taking the fourth position.

“I believe the social media platforms have an opportunity to support the enterprise and generate revenues in ways they don’t yet comprehend,” says Vonder Haar. “Social media platforms today are largely consumer-focused, similar to the AOLs and Yahoos of yesteryear. As we’ve seen in the past, when a communications platform is solely focused on the consumer market, they tend to decline and ultimately die off when attitudes change.”

To his way of thinking, Vonder Haar says that social media platforms can avoid irrelevancy or death by expanding their reach beyond user’s personal communications and in to those same users’ enterprise communications. “Social media is at a crossroads, with slowing consumer growth, and need to find ways to monetize their audiences,” says Vonder Haar. “Yet they have the tools to solve the most pressing business problem: delivering a substantial audience on a platform that’s consumer-tested.”

Vonder Haar went on to mention that social media platforms have the audiences and the video creation and distribution platforms, what he calls “the raw material for aggregating video distribution that delivers business benefit.”

So, if the Wainhouse Research insights from its recent survey are correct, social media platforms may turn out to be online video platforms (OVPs) in the near term. And unlike traditional OVPs, these social platforms have both the tools and the eyeballs to provide the enterprise market to battle-tested platforms for webinars and webcasts.

What if the social platforms opted to move beyond just lead generation and in to corporate communications as well? That might be one reason that Microsoft was keen to own LinkedIn: LinkedIn provided a ready-made audience. Another version of the narrative, though, says that Microsoft already has the video communications tools, which LinkedIn might need to catch up with Facebook and other consumer-focused social platforms.

One of those tools widely regarded as integral to unified communications is Skype for Business.

“When survey participants were asked about their UC platform of choice,” says Vonder Haar, “Skype for Business is definitively identified as the market share leader in unified communications.”

While it’s not necessary for a Skype caller connecting to TalkShow to use the Skype for Business application, since TalkShow works just as well with the consumer Skype app, there are benefits to the enterprise-focused Skype app offered by Microsoft beyond just Skype-to-Skype calls on Android and iOS devices. For instance, the newest Skype for Business 6.10 app now provides a way to answer Skype for Business calls in the same way a user would answer a cellphone call: swiping “answer” on the lock screen.

That level of seamless integration extends to the ability to move between a standard cellphone call and Skype for Business, not unlike Apple’s own FaceTime Audio. Unlike Apple’s integrated VOIP app, though, Microsoft’s Skype for Business also integrates enterprise stalwarts like Active Directory and SharePoint. The ability to tie into other enterprise-standard communication services brings Microsoft back to the forefront of an enterprise landscape it created decades ago. The stickiness of PowerPoint and the subsequent uptake of Active Directory and SharePoint means that Microsoft is using Skype for Business to round out its enterprise ecosystem in a way that Apple did when it enhanced its stickiness in the consumer ecosystem by tightly integrating hardware and software into a single user experience.

User response to these unified communications features have been generally positive, with one user noting that using Skype for Business on Wi-Fi allows the user to see presentation content and praising Skype for Business as being “more reliable for seeing and joining meetings, transferring from the laptop when you have to get out the door, etc.,” compared with earlier versions of Skype for Business and Lync that did not integrate as tightly with SharePoint.

An apparent Microsoft slip-up suggests that the company is planning to switch Skype for Business Online to Microsoft Teams.

The possibility of such a switch was noted in this Microsoft Tech Community discussion thread. Participants in that thread last week reported seeing an Outlook message stating that "Skype for Business is now Microsoft Teams!"

The conversation was cited by veteran Microsoft reporter, Mary Jo Foley, who had initially speculated that Microsoft's notice was a mistake. However, more definitive language also briefly showed up in the Office 365 Message Center for some users, as noted by Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Tony Redmond in this article.

The notice in the Message Center stated that "We're upgrading Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams." It was later removed from the Message Center, according to Redmond.

In a Tweet, Redmond stated that "Microsoft confirms Skype for Business becomes Teams." Perhaps Microsoft did that, or maybe Microsoft just leaked the concept. There's currently no confirmation from the company.

A Microsoft Tech Community post on Friday promoting the upcoming Microsoft Ignite event happening later this month noted that Microsoft is planning to announce "exciting news" in a Sept. 25 keynote talk, entitled "Microsoft 365: Transform your communications with Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business." Much of the Skype for Business talks listed in that post seem to be associated with Microsoft Teams.

Perhaps the news to come will be more about integrated capabilities, rather than some sort of a consolidation of the two services. Skype for Business Online is a separate Office 365 unified communications service enabling voice, video, presence and messaging communications. It has different capabilities from the "collaboration workspace" provided by the Microsoft Teams service, which surfaces organizational information though Office Graph search technology.

Microsoft Teams does come with Skype for Business Online communication capabilities. However, it's there to support "peer-to-peer (P2P) instant messaging only," according to a March 16 post in the Microsoft Tech Community thread by Microsoft MVP Darrell Webster.

Messaging support may not be a limitation, though. Early on, Microsoft Teams was described as having "audio calling from mobile devices, plus video on Android, which is coming soon to iOS and Windows Phone." Microsoft's Teams FAQ currently describes Microsoft Teams as "the hub for team chats, calls, meetings and messages." It seems clear that Microsoft plans to add other Skype for Business capabilities beyond messaging to Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft Teams initially was limited to internal collaborations within organizations. However, an early test capability to invite guests from outside an organization using Office 365 Groups was rolled out last month, and it has support for Microsoft Teams.

8x8 Tops Tolly Group List in VoIP Quality | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Setting up Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service isn't easy, mainly because there are so many options in the field. When there are a lot of choices out there, it's a pretty safe bet that the best choice will likely be buried under the competition's various propositions. However, picking the best in VoIP might be a little easier now thanks to a new report from Tolly Group, which put 8x8 at the top of the heap in VoIP.

The Tolly Group report—dubbed “Analysis of Cloud Communications VoIP Quality Under Normal and Adverse Conditions”—revealed that 8x8's Virtual Office solution provided the best voice quality under several different test cases. Tolly Group compared 8x8's Virtual Office to RingCentral Office, Microsoft's Skype for Business Online, Google Voice, and Google Hangouts. The comparisons were done both in VoIP to public switched telephone network (PSTN) and in “on-net” conditions, or in cloud-based VoIP to VoIP signaling.  The tests were even run over four different operating systems, including Windows, iOS, Mac OS X and Android.

In the end, Tolly Group found 8x8 Virtual Office came out ahead every time. Noting that there were several potential challenges to overcome in such a situation, ranging from things like bufferbloat and packet loss to delay and jitter, 8x8's system was found to overcome these issues most often and provide the best end user experience.

Having the best customer experience in a customer-facing service like VoIP could be the one thing that ultimately separates the winners from the losers here. With 8x8 clearly leading many of the major names in the field, that could be a great advantage for 8x8. Now, all it needs to do is clearly get the word out that it's providing a better experience—as objectively tested by third parties—and it should be a clear path to greater sales and market share.

This is the kind of news that great marketing campaigns can be built around, and with customers likely looking for an experience that won't be a total letdown, 8x8's value proposition of superior service in all conditions might just be the edge it needs to get ahead in the field.
